    USB over Cat5e or Cat6

Is it possible to extend the range of USB by having it go over Cat5e/Cat6? I know that USB is not just limited by signal loss, but also the timing of the longer run(It takes longer for the signal to get there, so the other side stops waiting for it too soon). But Cat5 should be able to help...

i can only access shares by IP across router

neither is the case. this is just a simple network(no domain). It's just 2 computers, and i created an administrator account with the same name and password. Also, the IP's are all correct. I've verified that. When I ping by name, it resolves to the correct IP.

    Cheapest barebones build

Hello, I'm looking to build the cheapest computer possible. The only requirements are: that the parts should be from a good online store(ie, newegg) the parts should be decent(it doesn't really need to be fast, just work) needs a DVD Dual Layer Burner no rebate(I hate those things) no...

    prohibit web browsing

I'm not sure if this should be posted here or not. Anyways, I was wondering if there was any way to block people from using their web browser, but still allow the computer to access windows update. This would be on a windows 2000 domain. It can be done at the user level, or at the...

    Windows XP and MX300

I just got the Logitech MX300 mouse. I want to use the drivers that come with windows, because the logitech drivers are too laggy when scrolling on webpages and stuff. But the problem is that the mouse has this little button right below the left and right buttons. Using the default windows...

    leadtek 2000expert

I couldn't find the answer to this anywhere, I'm thinking about buying the leadtek 2000 expert tv tuner card and I was wondering what the 2 catv ports on it are for. Does one of them come in from the wall, and the other go to the tv?

    cheapest computer

I'm just curious(though I might do it, if cheap enough), but if someone wanted to build the cheapest computer(with parts that are decent quailty), what specific parts would they use? The computer just needs to have basic extras to it: LAN, sound, video can be onboard, and a cd burner. And it...

    Chenbro Xspider

I have a question about this case. I noticed that the blanks that go on the front over the 5.25 inch bays, are the color of the case(ie, orange, or blue, or silver). So if I stick an ordinary beige drive in there, won't it look crappy? Or do the covers hide the drive somehow?

    New Build

really? I actually think the xpider looks better, but that's more of a personal prefernce. Is there anything functionally that is better about the x-dreamer? I really like the things on the Xpider that hold the PCI slots in without screws. I got the 9600SE, because I wanted TV-OUT that very...

    Gigabit Reviews & Benchmarks

I'm thinking of hooking 2 comps together with a X-over cable with 2 cheapo gigabit cards. They're only like 20 bucks at Newegg. Do you guys think that they will have decent performance with a X-over?

    PCI-Express, S-ATA, BTX... When?

is serial ATA hot swappable? I was reading some article about why you should use the special SATA power cable, instead of a regular power connector. And the article said that it is so that you can unplug it while it was on. That just made me wonder if it is truly hot swappable.

    New Build

i'm sorry for even posting this, I don't visit the gen. hardware forum ever, but I'm pretty sure you get this question like 5 times a day. But I just need some advice on a build. I'm looking to build a "bang for the buck" type system, maybe overclock, just a little. And this is what I have so...

    sound card to tv

well, crap, I fixed it. The above setup works. It turns out that for some reason, I need to unhook the cable from the tv, because it was causing interference on the signal. It was messing with the video signal too, I just didn't notice it.

    sound card to tv

I've connected my tv-out on my comp to the tv, and it works fine. But I also wanted to make it so that I could send the audio to the tv also. So I got a cable that goes from the 1/8 inch jack on the sound card, to the A/V input on the tv. The sound gets there, but it's very low, and crackly...

    LAN Status Window Question

judging by that picture, I think you're running XP, maybe 2000? But I do know there's a way to do it in XP, and it's prolly in 2000. open up task manager, go to the Networking Tab(obviously), then click on view-> select columns. Select "bytes sent" and "bytes received", and hit ok. Task Manager...

    Gigabit Reviews & Benchmarks

^that sounds to be around 400 mbit. So in your configuration, the hard drives should not be the limiting factor, since they should be able to pull just a bit over a gigabit/s. Maybe the onboard NIC is sharing the bandwidth with the PCI bus. Although don't the Xeon motherboards have a 64bit PCI...

    Gigabit Reviews & Benchmarks

JackMDS, do you know what the specs were in the systems they used for those benchmarks, I just skimmed thru them and didn't see anything about that. The reason I ask is that I'm pretty sure that the reason there's only a 125% increase is because the Hard drives are a limiting factor. gunrunner...

    WinXP router?

actually gunrunner, now that I think about it, the disk could very well be the limiting factor(I'm assuming you're not running SCSI, or RAID, but just regular old IDE). Think about most hdd's, although capable of going 100 or 133 mbytes/sec never actually get near those numbers. A large file...

    WinXP router?

yeah, from what I've read PCI maxes it out at 500, I made this post to try and confirm that. I'm pretty sure that the speed of the machine shouldn't limit anything(unless it's like a pentium 1 or 2). but gunrunner, how were you transferring that stuff? I'm planning on using ftp, which should be...

    WinXP router?

ok, how bad is it gonna be? I know that I'm not gonna get a full gigabit, but all I'm looking to do is get about 500 mbit. Is that unrealistic(from your experience)?

    WinXP router?

Thanks for the responses. I could be wrong here, but I do beleive that it's in the specs for all gigabit NICs to not need a crossover. Just a regular straight thru will do just fine. Any gigabit NIC that needs a special cable is built wrong. But I thought about it, and I think you guys are...

    WinXP router?

I'm building a new computer, and turn my current computer into a media pc, that will do other things as well. Both computers will have an onboard 10/100. But what I want to do is put a Gigabit NIC into both also. This way I can transfer files a good bit faster between the 2 comps. I want to...

cdrom not recognised by XP after swap of cdrom

try a different cable. It's not likely that's the problem, but some drives need a good quality cable to work right, your old one might have been able to handle it. Also, try to see if you can boot from that cd drive. If you can't, then the drive may be gone(or it might be the cable). If you can...

I'm not worried abuot security a whole lot, I just want to be able to do a little more than I can with my hardware router. I want to be able to set it up quickly, and learn about little by little AFTER it''s running, it's no fun to do it before

    linux router on a CD

Well, I'm pretty sure there are versions that run from a floppy that don't need a hard drive, but I don't think any of them have any sort of gui. And I don't want to stick a $40 hard drive in a computer that isn't worth that much. If I were to buy a hard drive I would have much better uses for...

    linux router on a CD

Is there a linux router that can boot from a CD(like Knoppix)? I'm looking for something that has a gui, or a web based interface(like most hardware routers). Preferably, it can store all the settings and stuff onto a floppy. The reason I'm looking for these features in particular, is that I...
