How can I completely neuter BitTorrent on a network?

Close the bit torrent ports and inform everyone to stop using it? The ports are 6881 and 6999 I believe.

Good webhosting for a discussion board?

Posting two threads about the same thing makes baby jesus cry. Lots of web hosts support things like databases and some even simplify the installation of phpBB. Google is your friend. I use midphase but the site has gone down a few times this year for about a day at a time. Thinking about...

    Best Way to Learn Linux?

I've always been curious about slackware because those who run it usually like it, but like I said I've read mixed things on it, that's why I hesitate to recommend it to a newbie. And yes the gui admin tools in Fedora help out, but that's all they do is help. I still had to edit the fstab, set...

    Best Way to Learn Linux?

Package management, the amont of documentation/support out for them, and relatively easy installs. I use Fedora and it has a bunch of gui administration tools that make it pretty easy. Mandriva is another somewhat newbie friendly distro also. Check out www.distrowatch.org. I've never used...

    Best Way to Learn Linux?

Fedora, Ubuntu, SuSu, or Mepis are usually the easiest to learn on. I would start off with those and then move on to slackware or gentoo.

Is it safe enough to directly connect your computer to a cable modem?

AT LEAST use zone alarm instead of the windows built in firewall. Pick up a cheap router or use an old computer and put linux on it and use that as a router/firewall.

Your chance to convert someone away from Microsoft

There are linux antivirus programs like clam AV but the only people who use them are the ones who have file servers for windows machines (so the files being moved between windows machines are cleaned) or the really paranoid ones. No linux spyware remover that I know of. And yeah, ever since...

Your chance to convert someone away from Microsoft

Everyone has just about covered everything but I'll add this: once you get your system setup nicely, you NEVER have to worry about a single program messing everything up, you don't have to worry about spyware or browser hijacking, and you never have to wory about virii (yes I know it's possible...

Can I LAN my RedHat Pentium PC to my WinXP PC

I know how to do it the other way around. Does that usb adapter work on the linux system? Cause if it does I would just have linux handle any and all network jobs, it's much better suited for networks then windows.

    Switch to linux...

    1) is it faster than windows xp? Yes. Boot time MIGHT be a little longer on linux. 2) will there be any trouble setting it up on a 2600+ athlon, ABIT KD7 motherboard, 512mb ram, and Radeon 9700pro computer? I have an all in wonder 9800 pro and can't get 3d going. Not a huge deal since...

I was just about to suggest this also. You can download it here: http://linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=44 It's a 'live' linux that boots right off the cd. Also see this http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Rescue_FAQ or google for 'rescue knoppix' and you'll find plenty of information. Good luck.
