how long does an OC'ed comp last?

My Duron 650 has been overclocked to 900 for 5 years now and is still working fine. Before that I had a Pentium III 600@733 which I upgraded and that one was still working fine after 4 years. Bottom line, if you plan on upgrading once in a while you will probably never see your CPU die unless...

    "Official" DFI nF4 Ultra-D / SLI-DR Thread

Thanks CheeseP but I can't take any credit cause it was so easy it made the whole overclocking ordeal process look like it was fake. What's prime stable? It boots in Windoze, what else is there? Nah, just kiddin. I've tested it 6h34min prime Small FFT. I guess I should try longer...didn't get...

    "Official" DFI nF4 Ultra-D / SLI-DR Thread

I just finished putting together a new system with the DFI Ultra-D and thought this would be the place to share it with the community. First off let me start by saying that I hesitated between the DFI and the Asus A8N-E. The few reports I was getting n the A8N-E were all good and the board had 3...

New system - How am I doing? Edit: All done

I thought this thread would have died, but oh surprise when I checked in "My forums". Anyways this a good occasion to post you some feedback. First, I received all the parts I said I would order. The installation was very smooth. Of course at this stage I'm in deep love with all my new...

New system - How am I doing? Edit: All done

I finally went with the 128MB Sapphire X700 Pro Lite and the Geil Dual Channel 2x512 value Ram. I'm now waiting for it all. Thanks for the input.

New system - How am I doing? Edit: All done

Yeah I got the Zalman 7700cu. But NewEgg has it for more then what I paid. I paid $53 CAN for it. NewEgg is asking $53 US. The Asus card you got is a sweet deal. I would jump on it if they had it here for that price. As for the Geil, I'm getting the value (cheap) ones; your first link. I...

New system - How am I doing? Edit: All done

Nice card but seems hard to find up here. The Sapphire X700pro Lite (W/O games) is available for cheap. It doesn't have the nice cooling like the Powercolor though. Here is a link at NewEgg for the card. So what d'ya think?

nFORCE 4 and Hard Drive - Compatibility Issues ???

From what I remember reading on Anandtech and StorageReview the Samsung are quieter and the Seagates are faster. I guess you probably knew this already. Good luck with your purchase.

New system - How am I doing? Edit: All done

Thanks for all the nice links Fisher999. I'm knee deep in video card decision making as I write this. The x700 is definitely a more performing card. It's a bit more than what I initially wanted to pay but I'm thinking right now...what the heck, it's worth it. On the other components, I...

New system - How am I doing? Edit: All done

The biggest doubt in my mind is the motherboard. I've been reading good reports on the Asus A8N-E, but the info is still quite limited. Also considering the DFI Ultra-D but it's more expensive and I don't know how well it can handle the value RAM.

New system - How am I doing? Edit: All done

I don't know about the red and green stuff. I'm guessing one might be thermal grease and the other thermal epoxy. If you search reviews for these sinks, you might find a better answer. Are 6600 based video cards known to be loud?

New system - How am I doing? Edit: All done

I'm thinking of using the ZM-NB32J which is flat (needed to slap on a fan) and shorter than the ZM-NB47J. If you were thinking of going completly passive then from what I read, ZM-NB47J would be the way to go. But since I plan on overclocking my rig, active cooling is safer.

New system - How am I doing? Edit: All done

The "overclocking the Venice thread" seems to support that since the Venices are toppping off at about 2700 right now; 9 * 300 that the Asus A8N-E should be able to handle.

    What was your first Computer?

Coco 80 from Radio Shack. The screen was the TV. Storage was on a regular tape drive...loading games was somethin. Then it was a IBM PC clone : 10 Mhz in turbo mode (why they even had a turbo mode is beyond me...who would turn turbo off?), 30 MB hard disk, amber screen, and a 5 1/4" floppy.

New system - How am I doing? Edit: All done

Yeah, I read the A8N-SLI NB fan thread and think I'm going to slap on the NB a Zalman heatsink (not the big one) and a quiter fan on top of that. Anyone have thoughts on the 3000 Venice vs 3200 Winchester for a little more? 3200 Venice is not available here yet.

New system - How am I doing? Edit: All done

I'm looking to upgrade my Athlon 2500. Here ar the criterias for the choice of components: - Price: I set the max near $1000 can (±800 US). Taxes are 15% up here. - Performance/overclock : I hope to hit at least 2,4 Ghz) - Stability - Will be mostly Photo editing, Web developpment, Java...

Asus A8N-E chipset fan: video/audio clip

For the NB fan, if you don't mind the agony of reading through all the pages, there is a dedicated topic on this forum to the A8N-sli's fan which is the same one. For myself, I thought about going for Zalmans's shorter NB heatsink and slapping on a fan that could be speed controlled through...

Asus A8N-E chipset fan: video/audio clip

Sure is one annoying little beast. BTW, I'm seriously considering this board. How do you like it, aside from the NB fan? Did you overclock it? If so please post your results and system config.

    "Official" DFI nF4 Ultra-D / SLI-DR Thread

I'm currently running my ultra-d on an OCZ Powerstream 420w, which has 33a on the 12v rail. Don't you mean 30a on the 12v rail? I also have the Powerstream 420w.

    2x36GB raptors in raid0 or 1x74GB raptor?

I'm aware of the safety drawbacks of raid0 and it is a bit of turnoff. I'm mostly after better overall system response. Gaming is not my main concern. Multitasking with photo editing, office apps, web creation, listening to music,... makes up my day to day. I use the computer alot and every...

    2x36GB raptors in raid0 or 1x74GB raptor?

I have read that the 74GB raptors are a newer, faster generation hard drive then the 36GB. I can get two 36GB for roughly the same price as one 74GB raptor. Anandtech is stating that there is no place for Raid0 on the desktop here. So what should I go for?

    "Official" DFI nF4 Ultra-D / SLI-DR Thread

I don't mean to throw gas on a blazing fire but while were in the a8n vs DFI topic, I read in a couple of places that the a8n-e (non-sli) has solved the 250mhz 1T problem and it overclocks good. Someone herehere has it way past 250. Another forum member here, EndGame who also owns a DFI NF4...

    Is Asus Great??

Life would be easy if you could split Mobo companies in categories Great-Ordinary-Stay away. Unfortunately, it's not that simple. Most makers have different type of boards catering to different market segments. Some concentrate on specific niches like ECS=value market. Bottom line, it all...

    A8N-E or A8V-E Deluxe

Actually to be more precise, 3Gb/s = 3000Mb/s = 3000/8 MB/s = 375 MB/s. BTW I'm also in the market for an upgrade and I'm seriously considering the A8N-E. I just wish I could find more feedback on this board. I know a fellow user here called "Endgame" has the board and prefers it over his...
