You are running a local X server I take it ? Try Mocha X server if you don't have one - it's free :)

    Problems with Windows Update

Download and install the standalone windows update agent. That will get you the latest version. Then, try again. Check proxy settings as well with "proxycfg". http://go.microsoft.com/FWLink/?LinkId=84399

    overclock disaster

Well, that worked a treat! Apparently when I went out to buy a sandwich and came back and ate it, that wasn't long enough for the board to discharge. First thing I tried was the CMOS jumper, but it didn't make a blind bit of difference. Went on the 360 for a couple hours, tried it after and...

    overclock disaster

OK, this is my own fault: Got an A8N-Sli deluxe with 3800x2 (s939), 7800gtx and 7100gs in it. Used to run it from its stock 2ghz at 2.5ghz with no problems, but when the CMOS battery died and I replaced it, I never bothered taking it back up to 2.5ghz again and left it back at stock 2ghz...

Powering a small fan off of xbox360 USB ?

Yeah, I'd heard a few bad things about those though. A lot of it could be scaremongering, but even the guy where I bought it told me to keep away from them, as he'd had two back that very day, allegedly because of the coolers. Scorching around the power connector and death. I've got a heap of...

Powering a small fan off of xbox360 USB ?

As per the title really, my 360 is in a cabinet which has the doors open when playing (naturally), but it can get a bit warm in there. It hasn't overheated (yet?), and I've created some ventilation slots in the back of the unit, but I thought a fan directly behind the box will help to extract...

    Random Crashes

Download and run memtest86, let it run overnight to see if there's any bad memory about. Usually the best place to start when investigating random crashes. System specs would be useful, including the brand, make and wattage of the power supply. Extra juice needed for the gfx card perhaps ?

    A8N-SLI premium lockup problems

Funny - I googled that and this is where I ended up. I'm fed up of major heavy IO causing either some major stuttering, or a complete hang in XP64 (sometimes very occasionally in xp32 as well). Need to do some further research on this - anyone got any pointers ?

gfx corruption on an old game

Hi all I dusted off an old game called "Screamer 4x4" to give it a go. I'm on an A8N-SLI deluxe, 3800x2 and 7800gtx. 81.98 forceware. However, when I get into the game, I'm seeing lots of flashing blue objects where various textures should be and it's unplayable. Given the age of the game...

Asus K8N-E s754 - raid array is seen as seperate disks

I did. Just wondered if anyone knew the fix. Thanks anyway, works fine as-is. In fact, now I think of it, I'll actually be using the raid controller drivers rather than the IDE driver for all PATA disks, so it's no longer a problem.

Asus K8N-E s754 - raid array is seen as seperate disks

Asus K8N-E socket 754, nForce 3 chipset. Latest BIOS. Made the RAID driver disk as per the enclosed CD, enabled the RAID controller for both primary IDE channels, created the RAID mirror and rebooted. OS now doesn't see the two disks at POST, but the RAID screen spots them and advises that...

"can I do two slots at 512 and 2 at 256" Yes, but not in dual-channel. Must be same on both side, ie, 512/256 and 512/256 or 512 and 512 or 256 and 256.

    Scsi query

"Would most scsi disks with an ultra320 interface be crippled by an ultra160 controller card on a PCI bus? If so - mostly then by the bus or by the card? " They won't be crippled - they'll just talk at Ultra160 speed instead of Ultra320. If you want to call that 'crippled' as such, be my...

    ASUS A8N-SLI Premium, Raid setup

In testing, the Silicon Image had a lower CPU usage under heavy load. However, if you had to move disks to another PC and reconstruct the array (and if the array manager writes a signature to the disks), then you might find it easier picking a board with an nvidia raid than another SiI. Up...

AHH Corrupt system file, and recovery console won't detect my raid array. *fixed, in a strange way...*

Boot up either the recovery console from CD, or knoppix. Take a look at C:\WINDOWS\system32\config. If the file in there called "system" is missing or the system.sav is pretty small (say, under a meg), then you've had it and a reinstall is your only option. You could rename the system.sav...

AHH Corrupt system file, and recovery console won't detect my raid array. *fixed, in a strange way...*

It's not an MBR problem. The problem is that your registry hive for SYSTEM is corrupt. Unless you did a system state msbackup recently, then the system.sav that's in that directory will likely be the one that was created when you installed the OS. You should get your console up with your...

Are the cat5 cables that connect a cable modem

They might be, but they might not depending on the modem I guess. Why not just try it? Or just spend a couple quid for a crossover cable and do it properly? If you want to share that internet connection, why not spring for a cheap 100mbit switch instead?

    Newer Xp's and SATA

You should install from a slipstreamed SP2 disc anyway, that way you have some security while waiting for all the updates to download. SP2 must include some SATA stuff I think, I've never had to F6 a driver in for SATA and my SATA machines have all been SP2 from the install.
