Need a new 12" Notebook, recommendations?

Good day everybody, Although I am a bit of a lurker, I have been using AT for some time and appreciate all of the expertise that posts here. I currently have a Dell Inspiron 700m that has served me very well for almost 4 years. I have never had a problem with it until recently the PCIe...

Looking for a decent used photo printer

Hi there, I am looking for a few recommendations for decent-quality photo printers that are out there. I am looking to buy used from the FS forum on this site, so if you're going to suggest a model, something not "just released" is what I'm looking for. I am just a Joe Blow looking to print...

    eMachines Drivers?

I am trying to find a good CDROM/CDRW driver for my eMachines desktop computer, T2385. The CDROM is a LG CED-8080B and it won't pick up any CD's I put in it. The eMachines website does not have a CDROM driver listed for my model... any ideas as to where I can get a good CDROM driver for...

Older PC, USB/PS2 ports via MB add-on card

I have an older PC (366MHz Celeron, 256MB of RAM) that I managed to install Windows XP on and I have some driver issues. I figured that XP would automatically recognize the USB 1.1 ports, but no-go. I just want to be able to use an optical mouse, can't imagine going back to a roller ball. I...

    Program to access flaky HDD?

As the title suggests, I have a Maxtor 160GB HDD in a 3.25" USD 2.0 enclosure that is making some noise and certainly not so healthy. Once I plug it in to my PC, it seems OK and XP picks it up, but then it locks up my PC when I try to access it and/or manipulate any files on it. I know that...

XP not searching online for new drivers?

Weird issue... I re-installed XP a couple of nights ago on a fresh system with an ASUS P4P800 motherboard and when I did the usual "Device Manager" check, I had flags on the following items: -Ethernet Controller -Multimedia Audio Controller -SM Bus Controller -USB Controller -Video...

Won't let me past the logon screen?!?

Yikes.... I think I'll just F8 this thing to death, get into safe mode, dump their MP3's onto my remote HDD if the USB connections will still work in safe mode, that is.... Otherwise, I'll pull the HDD, install it as a slave in another PC, hook up my remote HDD that PC as well, then...

Won't let me past the logon screen?!?

OK, I have been enlisted to fix my aunt's family computer...yay! Her kids use this thing all the time, download tons of music, etc. so no doubt it's chock full of spyware and probably has a virus. Basically, when the PC gets to the logon screen, you can enter either of the passwds for the...

    Paperport alternatives?

Looks like I broke AT. I did some research and I believe it was PCMag that I read the article in. It appears that no other program can make a .pdf into a "form" that you can fill out with text, like Paperport can.

    Paperport alternatives?

Don't know if any of you have used Paperport before, but basically, it has a feature which allows you to open a .pdf document (say for example, a standard gov't form with blanks & checkboxes to fill in) and you could basically start typing directly in the fields that require filling. Very clean...

Busted my Garmin eTrex Legend GPS

The screen of my GPS recently became scratched badly and I want to repair it. I will assume that it's just the front face cover - not the actual LCD screen - that is scratched since it is a sealed, waterproof unit. I really do not want to send my unit to a repair center since the one here...

    Windows XP on older machine

After installing another 128MB of RAM for a total of ~300MB and now the PC seems to be running fine. I did strip it down to be as barebones as possible and that seems to have helped considerably as the CD-ROM is now working well. I know you all think I'm crazy to try it, but it really does...

    Windows XP on older machine

XP seems to be running fine right now... I stripped it down considerably and now it even runs Word and Excel without any trouble. After checking the system resources, it appears that the PC has 160MB of RAM - which is a little better - and it was using about 90MB to run XP, with 70MB to spare...

    Windows XP on older machine

Hey, great post, very helpful. I do not have much experience with Win 2000, so that's why I prefer to stick with XP if I can. It just needs to run one little program, so I'd like to get to work if I can. I know the processor speed is painfully slow, but I have installed XP on slower (CPU...

    Windows XP on older machine

I'm trying to install Windows XP Pro on an older Celeron 366 with 128MB of RAM. It's working reasonably well, even the actual install itself is fairly quick via the XP CD, but once I have it fully installed and try to install additional programs (like Office 2k), the CD-ROM just bugs out...

Win XP Pro system continually loops

Win XP Pro system continually loops

Not OC'ing. I may have another stick kicking around, but apparently the PC registers the RAM right now without any problems, i.e. she suns it all up in the bootscreen well and it shows up properly in the BIOS. -Rob

Win XP Pro system continually loops

No idea as to why this is happening, but I'm going to try booting in safe mode and see what happens. The only thing I did differently is that I hooked up a DSL service to it about a week ago. Yes, it's firewalled and locked up with Norton Antivirus, so it should be OK woth regards to an...

    0x000000A5 BSOD - ACPI Incompatibility...

To all who consult this thread for future use... I updated the BIOS and my ACPI problem (blue screen of death) went away completely. Furthermore, if you have an ACPI / APM problem with any PC, the first step I would recommend is to search out any possible BIOS updates and install them ASAP.

I also have an "ACPI not fully compatible ..." error when trying to boot into an IBM NetVista PC. I am taking your advice to update the BIOS to the must current level. IBM's Tech Support page for my model states that there is a critical BIOS update that must be performed, so I suspect this...

Dell Laptop not picking up printers anymore?

I do not know what setting I tweaked to do this, but for some reason, my laptop will not recognize any printers when I plug them into any of my USB ports anymore. I used to be able to plug in just about any printer and they would be instantly recognized, but lately when I plug in a printer...

Disabled print spooling, now no printer?

I tried doing that, but under "msconfig" the box next to "Print Spooling" appears to have a check mark in the box, as though it has already been enabled. How can I change to manual control? I'm a little puzzled since I really do not understand how I could turn on/off the PNP printer...

Disabled print spooling, now no printer?

Choppy DVD playback on Dell Inspiron 8200

Well now, what's the chances I'd find a fellow with the same setup, awesome. I was hoping that it was just a software issue since my hardware does seem to be more than adequate to run a simple DVD. I'll try to grab a copy of WinDVD 2000 somewhere and try it, thanks for the tip.

Choppy DVD playback on Dell Inspiron 8200

Hardware acceleration was set at max from the start... Grrrr. I ran the ATI Radeon utility and set everything to maximum "Peformance" as opposed to "Quality", but still no difference. I had a no-name brand, Celeron 2.0GHz laptop before this one with 256MB of RAM and a 16MB video card and...
