The Unofficial Abit AN8 Ultra thread

Dinos22, did you remove the thermal pad before adding the thermal compound? If so, does the pad have to be removed before the chipset gets hot so the pad won't melt? Or can I remove it later if I don't like the performance?

    Athlon 64 3000+ 939 OEM

A long time ago, I thought the UPS guy didn't like me as most of my boxes were damaged (especially around the corners). But then I found most of my neighbors had the same problem. Oh well, I assume we'll be ok if the chip fires up, (ie, any shipping damage would cause the chip to fail right...

    Athlon 64 3000+ 939 OEM

The box had those large air bubble packs (about 5 by 10 inches). All together there were 4 bubbles. The bubble under the CPU was popped (deflated). The one on top still had air. I'm worried because I've heard stories how people damage the CPU by applying too much force on the heatsink...

    Athlon 64 3000+ 939 OEM

just got my YBBLE 0524DPBW today, but the box was crushed. I checked the processor and the pins aren't bent. I won't be gettinng my MB until later this week so I can't test the CPU. I'm a newbie, and wondering if there could be "non-visible" damage (ie, can processor get damaged with heavy...

    Video Card

I'm also looking for a non-gaming videocard. But I've been told a 128MB card with 128 bit memory bus would be a waste for video and photo editing. Is that accurate?

Do bus type, memory size, etc. matter for non gaming cards

Thanks orangat I was going to get a PCI card if I got a PCI-E board. I'm still trying to decide between AGP & PCI-E. I read about the technical benefits of PCI-E, but outside of graphics and gigabit ethernet, I don't know of any devices that will take advantage of PCI-E. But I guess that...

Do bus type, memory size, etc. matter for non gaming cards

Hi: I need a video card for photoshop and dvd editing (No gaming). After reading THG and this forum, I'm confused. THG and many posters say, get the cheapest card. However, others have said, if you get a PCI card, then you may need more memory. So my questions are: 1) Will PCI card...

NEC 1735NXM $90 Rebates Invalid If Purchased At Staples

A poster at SD reported he already got his NEC $90 rebate from a Jan. 2005 purchase from CIRCUIT CITY. This leads me to believe NEC is sitting on the Staples rebate trying to figure out what to do (or trying to figure out the damage - rebate submission deadline was 2/15 :) While I believe...

Upgrading to a new computer will I have to buy XP again?

Was your CD an ibuypower CD with windows xp on it or was it a pure Windows XP disc? According to a previous poster, you should have been able to get a Windows XP CD to work.

Upgrading to a new computer will I have to buy XP again?

Great to know - I'll have to give it a shot. I certainly feel I've spent more than enough money on MS. Just didn't want to throw away my current software investment.

Upgrading to a new computer will I have to buy XP again?

Didn't know that - tried to get a Win XP CD a few years ago from Sony because I wanted to repair and not reinstall XP. Unfortunately, they wouldn't give or sell me one. Don't know how to get a CD without buying a retail / OEM copy.

Upgrading to a new computer will I have to buy XP again?

Thanks for the link. I should have added "tech neophyte" to my ID - I managed the switch to Firefox, but just couldn't figure out OpenOffice so I broke down and bought MS Office (along with over $1K of Windows software).

Upgrading to a new computer will I have to buy XP again?

Thanks again harvey Plan B seems to be the way to go. My friend was talking around $75, but after reading your first post, I searched the net and found some OEM WinXP for around $80. Doesn't make sense to do a minor upgrade for ~$155. Just want to confirm that means I can upgrade any...

Upgrading to a new computer will I have to buy XP again?

That?s hilarious green, wish I could try that with my pre-installed version. But on a serious note, I didn't realize consumers are screwed if their motherboards fail and they have a pre-installed OS. Of course, I'm not in that situation, but I'd be pissed if that were the case.

Upgrading to a new computer will I have to buy XP again?

Sorry for being dense, but does that mean you can change basically anything on a PC (except for the harddrive) and the OEM version will work or that one copy of OEM XP works on multiple computers?

Upgrading to a new computer will I have to buy XP again?

thanks Harvey, my friend is upgrading and is willing to sell me his old Athlon CPU and board. However, if I have to pay for a new OS, it may make sense for me to stay put or just build a new PC as you suggested. So it seems I really don't own my own copy of the OS, rather it is like the...

Upgrading to a new computer will I have to buy XP again?

On a related note regarding pre-installed WinXP - I want to replace the CPU/motherboard on my Sony. I only have the recovery CD - tried to get a real Win XP from Sony, but failed. Since I'll be using my old HD with XP already installed, does anyone know if it will boot? If not, will a phone...
