Terminal Services / Remote Desktop Troubles...

Thanks for the input. :-) I figured out what the problem was by doing a wee bit more searching, and I feel like I should leave the answer here for any more wayward administrators. :-) The key, of course, was in the event viewer (duh). Event Type: Error Event Source: TermDD Event...

Terminal Services / Remote Desktop Troubles...

I just got finished configuring a server with terminal services on it, but I'm getting the following message when I try to connect to it "The connection was ended because of a network error. Please try connecting to the remote computer again." I can't seem to find any substantial information on...

Blinking LCD - Monitor or Integrated Graphics?

Hello. Two of my users recently began experiencing problems with new computers / lcd monitors, and I'm trying to determine which is causing the problem. Changing the refresh from 75 to 60 HZ on one of them fixed the problem and from 60 to 75HZ on the other "fixed" the other one temporarily...

    Terminal Services (remote desktop) Printers

Thank you. I thought maybe that's what you meant, but wanted to find out if there was some aspect of this whole procedure that I was missing. Thank you for your time, Justin

    problem connecting to Remote Desktop

Hmm... if you can type in "frontdesk" then it sounds like your port is still set to 3389. If you've already changed the listening port to 5555, then you'll need to reboot the computer and log in before you connect (the regedit doesn't take affect until you log back in (go figure)).

    Terminal Services (remote desktop) Printers

Hmmm... Not to sound ignorant, but, perhaps I am. Can you explain the process of adding a virtual printer? It would be greatly appreciated.

    Terminal Services (remote desktop) Printers

Anyone here know of a laser printer that works right out of the box with terminal services? I'd prefer not to go with HP, simply because their DOT4 port printers are such a huge hassle. Thanks, Justin

    WAN Ping Response & Security...

Does leaving your firewall set to respond to ping increase your vunerability, or probability to be attacked? We have a vpn that someone, who shall remain nameless, set up to respond to a keep alive ping on its wan port, rather than on the internal network... Does this represent a security...

    VPN woes...

Hello all. I've got three networks I'm trying to tie together with 3 netgear prosafe vpn appliances. The main network consists of about 25 or so computers and a server. The other networks are about 3 computers apiece, so fairly small operations. When I go to the remote locations, I can see...

    Server 2003 CAL Question

Thank you both so very much! I cannot express how relieved I feel! In your estimation then, I should just keep the CALs alongside the computer (in the documentation) and kill the licensing server I have running? Thank you again! Justin

    Server 2003 CAL Question

Hello all. I'm not sure this is the best place for this question, but, someone might know, so I was hoping. :-) Here's the question. I'm setting up a network with a server running MS server 2003. I've activated the licensing server, but I'm not seeing any way "installing" these CALs on...

HOWTO: Installing multiple OSes *my* way

Oops, I should have been more verbose. :-) I get both options from the menu at bootup, but the one for server 2003 doesn't lead anywhere... it just causes my computer to reboot after scrolling very rapidly through some commands (if I have it in safe mode, otherwise it just appears to reboot)...

HOWTO: Installing multiple OSes *my* way

Rats, wish I'd read this a few days ago. I installed server 2003 and then XP... Now I can't get it to boot into 2003 (although it boots into XP just fine). When trying safe mode, I can see a quick list of commands, and then it reboots. I'm pretty sure it's an nt loader thing. I suppose I...

Done something stupid... CDROM boot hangs at "Setup is inspecting" - nothing more

Interestingly enough, it booted fine off of a linux disc! Well, that got me in enough to reinstall Win2003. I was stupid when I set 2003 that first time. I thought that it *might* have the raid drivers built into the installer- hahahah- anyway... I suppose when the install disc had the...

Done something stupid... CDROM boot hangs at "Setup is inspecting" - nothing more

Okay, so, I was feeling my oats this morning and decided I'd install server 2003 on my machine next to my windows XP install, (different logical drives). Everything went fine until I went to reboot after the base install of server 2003.. at which time, it sat blankly staring at me. Yeeks...

    spyware adware malware /trojans

Alright, so I got manipulated into helping a friend of my girlfriends track down the source of his computer's problems... Well, I started off by installing Avast which located over 700 viruses and deleting them. Then I ran both adaware and spybot. Of course, even after running all of these...

    World Community Grid

I'm pretty sure they're having a big spike in registrations right now, so hopefully that's what the problem is. I'm thinking of bringing my secondary computer online this afternoon. I'll let you know if I have similar problems when I do. Justin

Hello all. I signed up under anandtech last night. Just thought I'd let you all know that you've got another on board. I'm at 99% on my first work unit! *shivers excitedly* <---please ignore, it's cold in here. Justin

AMD XP 2000+ OR extra money for Barton 2500+

Indeed, the mobile version should overclock better, and at lower voltage. I'd go for that in a heartbeat. Justin

Why is bitorrent causing my internet connection to fail?

    >>>yeah. switch from stupid zonealarm.<<< Probably not a bad idea... They've really inconvenienced a lot of people with this release, shows a lack of concern for their customers. Anyway, if you want it, they should have 4.5 up on their servers too, which is of reasonable quality. Justin

AMD XP 2000+ OR extra money for Barton 2500+

If you decide to go with the 2000, 2200, or 2400, go with the Thorton version rather than the Thoroughbred version. They run cooler, and overclock better. My 2400 thorton will do 2.25 on air... and that's without an AGP/PCI lock and the multiplier on 15 (which is stock). Justin

Power Savings... challenge questions (antithetical questions)

Hi all. Okay, so I've been watching that little dial in my electric meter spin lately, and I've been thinking, Geez, that little bastard moves faster than my neighbor's do, and while I do like things running as fast as possible, I don't want an overclocked electric bill... Question #1 - I...

Why is bitorrent causing my internet connection to fail?

I couldn't help but notice that you said you were going to give ZA a try. The 5.0 client is said to have issues with both BitTorrent and eMule. Anyway, you might want to turn off the firewall and see if that fixes the problem. ZA should have a fix fairly soon. Justin

    IE or FireFox?

Best thing about tabs is the ability to load all your tech pages at once! Just place a group of bookmarks in a folder together, then scroll down to the bottom of that folder and select "Open in Tabs." Voila! No need to go running back up to reopen pages... the rest of them load while you read...

ZA Pro/ nonpro 5.0 a real stinker... dl at your own peril

It appears that Check Point's acquisition of ZoneAlarm a few weeks ago has pushed a beta out the door without proper testing. Check out the user forums over at ZoneLabs for details. http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/board?board.id=inst They've worn themselves down to a 47% approval rating...
