    Keystone/Patch Panel Hack

    good point for the sake of argument (and since we may only be living here for a year), will the extra room's termination points cause the sort of interference I'm talking about...to the point where I'd notice a problem? i set out to change as little as possible in case we left and i had to...

    Keystone/Patch Panel Hack

    I recently moved into a new house that had an existing phone patch panel yet had cat5e throughout the walls, terminating in rj11 phone keystone jacks. The 8 conductors were spread across two phone lines at each jack. Since I don't have a phone line, and was interested in networking two rooms...

    Hibernate --> Switch Users screen?

    You know what...I didn't. However I checked Device Manager and see ICH9 entries in there, and I have my DVD burner + other SATA devices in AHCI mode. Should that not be enough? I know I had to do all of that in XP manually, but I don't believe I had to when I was running the Windows 7 RC Beta.

    Hibernate --> Switch Users screen?

    YES! I didn't think I could...Weird.. So then it seems like it must be a software setting and not hardware related?

    Hibernate --> Switch Users screen?

    It is. Just tried that. There's one "Unknown PCI Device" in my Device Manager...is there some device that I have to have working before Hibernate will work? I keep wracking my brain but I can't think of what I haven't installed a driver for yet...

    Hibernate --> Switch Users screen?

    Since my reformat and reinstall of WIndows 7 the other day, I cannot hibernate. I have re-enabled it by disabling Hybrid Sleep, but whenever I click on the Hibernate button from the Start Menu, the screen fades and I end up at the Switch Users screen.... The only thing I've done differently...

    Switching system hard disk

    Oops. My bad. I set out writing this post with the intention of putting the words "real world" in there (no joke). I didn't realize I didn't put them in there :) Yes. Real world difference, benchmarks and numbers aside.

    Switching system hard disk

    I've got a 320GB Seagate ST3320620AS and a 640GB WD6400AAKS. The 640 is one of those newer ones with 2x320GB platters and I bought when I built a new pc with quietness in mind, and to give my previous 320GB system disk a rest. So right now I have the 640GB multibooting a few OSs, and the...

    Tiniest ITX case with full sized optical drive?

    Hey All, I wanna build an htpc with a bd-rom drive, but all of the cases that seem to fit the bill will only take a slim optical drive. A fullsized drive could cost $65 these days, but a slim one costs significantly more. The ideal image in my mind is something the size of say, a mac mini...

    Thanks for the reading. Didn't quite resolve em :( I just got it again and after this time, I got a "Windows Recovered From a Serious Error" for the first time. If I click details, I get this: ------------------- Problem signature: Problem Event Name: BlueScreen OS Version...

    > BSOD on Windows Server 2008

    Just noticed some differences in the voltages/timing reported by CPUz with my current BIOS setup (everything set to default). CPU-Z Screens If G.Skill says to go to 2.0-2.1v (the only glaring difference in the #s that I currently have), what should I start at? 2.0V and see if the problem...

    8E Stop Error Got a hit! Finally. Took about 30 minutes of clicking and wandering around folders till i got the error. Happened when I was using Calculator...sounds more and more like a memory thing. Weird tho..I don't understand how I could use Ubuntu & XP so flawlessly if it were a memory...

    Hi All, Let me see if I can answer some of those important questions. @RebateMonger: "Did you say what your hardware was? I see a hardware list at the bottom of your posts, but those mention Ubuntu and Vista. Server 2008, 32-bit or 64-bit? " The hardware I have in my sig is up to date...

    > BSOD on Windows Server 2008

    The moderator moved it to this forum actually. http://www.google.com/search?q...&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a A lot of people are using it as a workstation OS. There are a lot of guides explaining how to change the services to that end.

    > BSOD on Windows Server 2008

    I thought I'd give Server 2008 a try since it was on Dreamspark for free, and I've read all these great things about it--how people have been using it as a workstation OS. I've been getting D1 and A stop errors pretty consistently. At first I thought it had to do with when I was writing to...

    Can I trust Abit uGuru?

    I've been in ignorant bliss believing Abit's uGuru reporting my q9450's temps at an idle of 26 degrees C. My friend told me recently about something that intel has neglected to release that properly allows temps to be reported. He couldn't explain it more than that, and as a result, I've had...

    Why Does Ext. HDD make seek noises when not in use?

    So why does my USB attached Seagate harddrive make clicking noises at times when it is definately not in use? I understand that is a difficult question to ask, in terms of the software that I have installed on my computer that might be accessing it at times, but this happens (I think) when I've...

    Board Recommendations

    I had actually been eyeing the p182. The powersupply has been in use since around february of 2006. I actually wanted to amend my graphics card usage notes. I realized that I forgot to mention using Sketchup. I feel like that is 10 or even 100x less intensive than any current game out there, but...

    Board Recommendations

    Hey all, I've been reading around different websites and forums lately as I've been in the market for a new computer build. I can't seem to find too many recent posts/articles about non-gamer/enthusiast type computers. The 'Attention System Builders' sticky was useful but i;d like some more...

    Dell 8400 BIOS won't detect 2 IDE devices, does in Windows

    Topic says it all. There's a SATA drive with the OS on it, and a storage IDE harddrive as well as a DVD drive. No matter the cable, the BIOS will detect only the middle device on the cable (with cable select, or master, or slave). Once in windows xp, the drives work. It doesn't totally...

    XP won't go to the 2nd part of its installatioN

    P.S. This happened a month ago when I was talking him through this exact process (installing windows on a primary, fat32 partition at the end of a drive with ubuntu installed at the front), and I didn't believe him. I'm trying myself and am having a hard time believing it. But apparently this is...

    XP won't go to the 2nd part of its installatioN

    So I've got a happy Ubuntu partition at the front of my 320GB disk. Then I've got a swap partition, and a few other document/data partitions and then at the very end, I decided to put back a little XP partition at the end of the disk. So I started the XP install, loaded my sata drivers from a...

    Need Massive Storage Solution

    So my dad is a digital photographer. I don't live nearby, and he's always been reluctant about opening up his G5 to put more disks in it. As a result, he's got LOTS of external drives. On top of that, he's got tons of archived work on DVDs. He tells his clients he only keeps their stuff for a...

    Safe to check my desktop as luggage for flight?

    I'm moving just for the summer, and intend to pack very light. However, I think I might go crazy if I don't have a computer for the whole summer--which I won't if I don't take mine. Would it be a bad idea to box up my pc and throw it in a rolling suitcase (it'll fit)? I don't know how well...

    So I've got this old-ish laptop that my dad gave me when he retired it, and the power plug is a little faulty. The battery's kinda shot cuz it's so old, so it NEEDS to be plugged into a wall.
