Gaming performance always worse in Vista

It actually runs a little smoother in DX9 mode, so that's what I'll do until I get XP reinstalled on the new HDD.

Gaming performance always worse in Vista

I just decided to buy another hard drive and I'm going to put Windows XP back on it. Should be here by the middle of next week. I only have to tolerate Vista's poor gaming performance until then.

Windows won't boot after updates *NOT SOLVED*

I completed the RMA process online. Looks like you're right, no receipts needed. I did the advanced replacement option, which was $20, but that's better than shipping the bad drive to them, waiting for them to receive it, and then waiting until the replacement comes back. For $20, I get the...

Windows won't boot after updates *NOT SOLVED*

Unfortunately, I bought it off of eBay to save some money. It was new & sealed, but Seagate plainly said on their website that they will only honor warranties for products bought from authorized Seagate retailers.

Only 64-bit Vista can use more than 3 GB of RAM. My version is 32-bit.

Gaming performance always worse in Vista

I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but every single game I've ever tried to run (whether using DirectX 10 or not) is 15 fps or more slower on Vista than XP. It has been this way from the beginning (installed Vista at the end of January 2007), through several graphics card and chipset driver...

Windows won't boot after updates *NOT SOLVED*

Nope, same junk after format/reinstall. Has to be a bad hard drive. It lasted about 10 months. Any recommendations on what I should get to replace it? I've had pretty good luck with Seagate in the past, and this is the first one to die so soon on me. I guess I'll start shopping around...

Windows won't boot after updates *NOT SOLVED*

That's exactly what I have decided to do. The day before yesterday, my Vista installation was having trouble again. It would just hang for a long time on a black screen after the Microsoft loading screen. I brought home another hard drive from work and installed XP on it. No problems on...

Is there any reason not to put my computer in sleep mode as opposed to just turning off the monitor?

I still don't think you can have an active internet connection while in sleep (aka "standby") mode.

Is there any reason not to put my computer in sleep mode as opposed to just turning off the monitor?

I use Hibernate. YMMV, but for my system it's only about a 10 second difference (bootup time) between StandBy and Hibernate.

    Corrupted Windows XP or HDD?

They are on two separate drives. So McAfee with all the latest updates shouldn't miss anything, right? If I can be sure that I won't infect my other (Vista) hard drive by copying files from the XP drive, then I don't have a problem with backing everything I need up and doing a format/fresh...

    Corrupted Windows XP or HDD?

EDIT: Mods, please move to "Computer Help" forum if you think it that's where it belongs . I just now found it. Sorry!!!!! I don't know if it's against the forum rules to post a thread that basically points to another one in a separate section, but I'm not even sure it belongs in the...

Windows won't boot after updates *NOT SOLVED*

Well it started the same crap again today. I've run multiple diagnostic tests for the RAM and HDD's, and I don't get any errors or problems found. I installed McAfee Total Protection for Small Business (got it from work) and scanned. It found nothing on my XP drive, and 53 "threats" on my...

Windows won't boot after updates *NOT SOLVED*

The problem has been solved. I was using Windows Defender for my malicious software/spyware detection and removal. Well, apparently the "update" my wife was talking about was new definitions for Windows Defender. I was getting ready to do a system restore when I noticed that the last...

Windows won't boot after updates *NOT SOLVED*

Well here's an update. I booted up today and it looked like it was going to do the same thing, so I tried taking out one stick of RAM. It still took much longer than normal to get past the Windows XP loading screen, but this time it finally did. It said one of my disks needed to be checked...

Windows won't boot after updates *NOT SOLVED*

I had no opportunity to do a system restore. By the time the problem started, I couldn't get back into Windows. By memory shifts, you mean experiment with changing slots with the sicks of RAM?

Windows won't boot after updates *NOT SOLVED*

Which files does the Windows repair preserve? If the only choice it gives you is to back up everything in the Documents and Settings folders (seems I've heard before that such is the case), then I'll probably just proceed with my plan to take the hard drives out and back up the files myself...

Windows won't boot after updates *NOT SOLVED*

I have been out of town on business this week. I came home last night, and my wife informed me that something is wrong with the computer. She said it would just sit at the Windows XP loading screen for 5 minutes, and then it just reboots. So I checked it out, and sure enough that's what...

    8800GTX resistor value

Any of you remember this? http://www.legitreviews.com/article/417/1/ I recently bought a BFG 8800GTX from someone on another forum. After mentioning to a fellow gamer on Ventrilo that it has a black PCB, he brought this to my attention. I do not have a magnifying glass. However, my...

Help me ditch my CRT once and for all

Just look for user reviews at Newegg and stuch, and see what people say. Usually there will be some mention that "even resolutions outside the native looks pretty good". Didn't work out well for me, but maybe it will for you. I read several comments saying resolutions outside 1680x1050 didn't...

Help me ditch my CRT once and for all

Make sure your monitor supports multiple resolutions with the correct 16:10 ratio in addition to the native resolution. My Viewsonic Optiquest 20" Q20wb is 1680x1050...and that's IT for 16:10 resolutions. It does not support any others. It'll do 1600x1200, 1600x900, 1280x1024, etc. It...

Looking for advice - Is upgrading to GTX worth it?

Thanks for the link, Quixotic. I'll check it out later tonight when I get back. The problem with that is my stupid monitor won't do any other 16:10 resolution except 1680x1050. I'm willing for games to be a little less sharp in exchange for AA, but I refuse to play with distorted geometry...

Looking for advice - Is upgrading to GTX worth it?

That was kind of what I was hoping somebody would do here. Should I have made a thread that just specifically asked for somebody with a e6400 C2D and an 8800 GTX to play UT3 demo @ 1680x1050 with some AA turned on, and then report back to me what framerates they got? I guess I could do that...

Looking for advice - Is upgrading to GTX worth it?

I guess I'm just wishing I can see what kind of performance my current proc yields with an 8800GTX @ 1680x1050. Or, if I could compare benchies between my current proc and a quad core with the 8800GTS @1680x1050 that would be super. The CPU scaling benchies I've seen all use 1024x768...

Looking for advice - Is upgrading to GTX worth it?

Actually, the new beta Forceware supposedly allows you to enable AA through the drivers without any tricks. I just read it at planetunreal.com. There are also a couple of tricks to enabling AA in UT3: 1) Rename the UT3Demo.exe to Bioshock.exe and use your nvidia control panel to enable AA...

Looking for advice - Is upgrading to GTX worth it?

I'm using stock cooling, but I do have to use Rivatuner to make the fan speed 100%. It makes a little bit of noise, but do you really care while you're gaming? I don't. When I'm in desktop I just turn it back down to 60% or whatever. I haven't bothered with 3dmark. I haven't had any...

Looking for advice - Is upgrading to GTX worth it?

I was thinking I could get $300 or so out of it on ebay. That seems realistic based on the completed listings I saw.... However, I'm afraid that will go down quite a bit if the 8800GT is all it's cracked up to be. I probably couldn't get but $225 or so then I'd say. So if I can get $300...

Looking for advice - Is upgrading to GTX worth it?

But look at this: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3128&p=4 There is a 22+ fps difference between the GTS and the GTX at 1600x1200. I know that they're using a much more powerful processor than me, but the GTX sure does seem to blow away the GTS there (I consider nearly 30%...

I have been looking at some benchmarks around the net, and it looks like the GTX is a good deal faster than the GTS. However, I haven't been able to find really any benchmarks that are close to my setup: C2D e6400 (~3GHz o/c) eVga GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB (660/1800 o/c) 2GB DDR2-800 RAM...

That's probably what I'm gonna have to do, unless I wanna go back to XP. Vista is terrible for sound cards right now from what I've been reading. Turtle Beach doesn't support Vista at all yet. I'm going to wait a couple of more weeks for Turtle Beach to post Vista drivers for the Montego...

There won't be any Vista drivers for the Santa Cruz. It is a "discontinued product" and will not have any Vista support, according to the Turtle Beach website. There's no piano or organ. We sing from CDs. I will put the CD in the CD-ROM and play it with Windows Media Player. Then, while...

    Sharing files in Vista

I'm not an experienced admin, so most of the link was over my head, though it sounded like that I should be able to freely share whatever is in the "Public" folder. Naturally I assumed this when I set up the network, so I put the files I wanted to share with Everyone in the "Public" folder...
