    DVD+R in a DVD player

Yes if you burn with DVD-ROM book type there is a good chance that your Toshiba player will accept the DVD+Rs. You can find firmwares here, 2.F8 seems to be the latest with bitsetting support.

    DVD+ vs. -

First, Panasonic is not a +RW company, on the contrary it has been one of biggest anti +RW companies very late with adding support for writing DVD+R/RW to its DVD burners and intentionally blocking the format from being played on its DVD players unless they're fooled with bitsetting. I think...

    what's next for DVD-RW?

8x DVD+RW is already supported by a some drives. There are rumors about even faster speeds in development (like 12x DVD+RW some time next year). 6x DVD-RW is supported by the LG GSA-4163B and most coming drives. 8x DVD+R DL should show up in late Q1 next year. 4x DVD-R DL should also show...

(Updated) NEC ND-3500A "16x" DVD±R/RW "4x" DL (dual layer) drive (OEM) for "$68.00" shipped

According to some rumors the DVD+RW Alliance plans to release 8x DL specs in January and drives usually show up quite soon after specs are released (or even before). When 4x DL media is released it wouldn't surprise me if some drive manufacturers release writers that allows overspeeding to 8x...

    Reasonable price for DVD media?

Actually that page is filled with quite a lot crap and it's written by a guy that have showed numerous times that he really doesn't know what he's talking about. You'll find better info if you search for example CDfreaks.com's media forum.

Which DL DVD burner should I buy?

The NEC also burn DVD-ROM book type for DVD+R DL by default. Neither of them support it on single layer DVD+R/RW discs though which is the reason I won't buy any of them but wait for BenQ's 4x DL drive. BenQ always support changing of book type for all plus formats giving the best possibilities...

Which DL DVD burner should I buy?

The Pioneer is really nothing more than a 12x burner as it's slower at 16x than it is at 12x because Pioneer for whatever stupid reason choose to use ZCLV instead of (P)CAV tech. 16x is just pure marketing in this case. It's actually not even a fast 12x burner... The NEC ND-3500A will likely be...

    Artec 12x DVD±R/±RW $79.99 with MIR at Fry's

It's not rebadged, it's made by Artec and it's the first DVD writer made by them which certainly needed a lot more work before it should have been released. Very poor media support and doesn't burn a single media at 12x. Read here for more info. It's a very good candidate for the worst DVD...

    What?s the better format -- DVD-R or DVD+R?

With the original firmware use DVD-R. There is however a HP based firmware that supports bitsetting which make DVD+R just as compatible as DVD-R or, to my experience, even slightly better compatible. For both formats I recommend media made by Taiyo Yuden if you want the best quality. TY +R are...

    DVD-R media suggestion.

Bitsetting means changing bits for the book type/disc category from the default, for example DVD+R (10) for a DVD+R disc, to for example DVD-ROM (0) just like a pressed disc have which is the most compatible format. So if a DVD player doesn't recognize a DVD+R/RW disc with the standard book type...

    DVD-R media suggestion.

Samsung 4x DVD+R 50-pack are Taiyo Yuden and they're just as good as the -R version if not better (depending on your burner). Cheap at newegg too and just burn with -ROM book type with a bitsetting capable burner and you'll get a compatability that is just as good as -R if not better too.

    NEW DVD DL burner question

The burner's firmware must support bitsetting so it depends on what writer you have if and how you can do it. DVD writers from for example BenQ, HP, Lite-On, Ricoh and others support bitsetting while for example DVD writers from Optorite, Pioneer and Sony don't support bitsetting. If you are...

    NEW DVD DL burner question

"because my dvd player only plays minus". It will most likely play + discs too if you bitset them to DVD-ROM. There is no reason to believe -R DL will be more compatible than +R DL as it will also be completely new format and just because your DVD player plays single layer DVD-Rs there is no...

    great deal on 8x DVD-R only @67 from www.shop4tech.com

They're fake for sure. Several manufacturers are known to have started production of 8x DVD-R media using Taiyo Yuden's disc id as they don't get any 8x support for their (usually crap) discs by some drive manufacturers. The market will soon be flooded with cheap fake 8x "OEM Taiyo Yuden" DVD-Rs...

Optorite DVD writers are based on Sanyo chipset and as Artec's latest writers features "Superlink" and that indicate they're based on MediaTek chipset. BTC and LiteOn use MediaTek chipsets too but Artec's drive don't look like any of them so I think they are designed and made by Artec/Ultima...

    CR-RW, DVD+R media

Remember that it's just one opinion on that website and I for sure don't agree with some of the ratings. For example he rates Princo as "3rd class media" and CMC as "4th class". CMC has a lot of OEM contracts with brands such as Philips, HP and TDK and these discs are for sure not "4th class...

What brands are good for DVD-R media?

The term DVD is NOT trademarked and there is per definition no standard. On the contrary the format war has most likely resulted in a faster development and lower prices than if it had not existed, we have (soon) DL DVDs, 16x SL DVDs and $0.30 cheap (crap) media. So to sum up your wrong.

New Sony Dual Layer DVD Recorder

+R would probably work fine if you burn them with DVD-ROM bitsetting (possible with non-crap writers). For -R DL you'll have to wait until the end of the year or early next year and there is certainly no guarantee it will work better than +R DL.

    Dual-Layer Recordable DVD

    DVD+R Dual Layer question

Yes it's only DL DVD+R that will be released in the next quarter. It might be possible to make DL RW discs too in the future but it will be very hard to achieve the required reflectivity of the DVD specifications which means that they would not be compatible with standard DVD players.

What's the best DVD-Writer to get at the moment?

Philips, BenQ and Lite-On have said april-may for their first dual layer writers. Main application for DL media is backup of DVD movies so you will save the time you usually have to spend on transcoding/reencoding and it's not like you have to sit and watch while the disc is burned... A...
