Advice on getting a high-tech internship

I had an internship at Intel last summer and would recommend it to anyone :) Mine was in SSG (Software and Solutions Group), rather than on the hardware side of things. Intel is a huge company and they have positions for people with any number of skills.

How can i set up something that would allow somone else to download a file from me?

Any chance you could just burn it to a disk and let him borrow it? DVD-RW ftw :) Otherwise, I typically split the file into a bunch of smaller pieces, and then transfer them one at a time using some method (e.g. FTP). FTP servers work well, but would require a bit of effort to setup (port...

Anyone here actually watch the news on TV?

Heh, let's consider this for a moment. Here are the current headlines on CNN. This will of course, likely change, but they serve to illustrate my point: * Man arrested after crashing Capitol barricade * Experts search for source of E. coli outbreak * Update on space station...

Anyone here actually watch the news on TV?

I gave up on TV news years ago. Now, I just read it online. I'm subscribed to the Wall Street Journal, and I regularly peruse CNN. I quit watching it on TV for several reasons: - There's much less content. - The news you get is decided for you--it's much harder to "pick and choose" the...

Woohoo, just switched to wind power

Probably just an accounting gimmick. :) Presumably, the money I pay goes toward the maintenance/operation of windmills as opposed to coal-fired plants. The actual power I use comes from the same grid everyone else uses.

Woohoo, just switched to wind power

According to my billing history, I use about 220KW-hours per month, so about $68.64. Usage is relatively constant because I rent and heat is included in the bill--heat which is, no doubt, produced by coal power :P

Woohoo, just switched to wind power

Power in this area (Wisconsin) typically comes from coal. The local utility offered wind power for 2.6 cents more per KWH, so I switched. Now I can feel warm and fuzzy inside :) Where does your power come from?

    Asus P5B or Gigabyte DS3?

Although I've used neither, I just ordered the P5B yesterday :) If RAID is important and the P5B doesn't have it (I wouldn't know), then you should probably go with the DS3.

You can go ultra cheap if you want. Lawn chairs / fold-up table / air mattress bed (definitely not recommended). Are you starting with nothing or can you take at least _something_ from your current residence?

How much memory do you need?

My grandparents' box is XP w/ 256MB. They use nothing but AOL, and a quick view at task manager typically shows they have ~40MB free. This includes AV + a few other utilities in the background. I'd say 256MB to avoid paging--128MB would almost certainly involve paging on any modern OS. If...

    Summer internships

Tomorrow is my first day at a certain semiconductor manufacturer with which we're all quite familiar. I'm just a grunt summer intern, and will only be there the next 13 weeks, but I'm certainly looking forward to it as a change of pace from school. Any other summer interns on here? Anyone...

    Daemon Tools

Steps: 1) Make a CD image ("iso") of the program in question using some other software, e.g. Alcohol 120%, Nero, BlindWrite 2) "Insert" the virtual CD image into a Daemon Tools virtual CD drive. 3) Play the game. Unfortunately, it's not that simple. Most games have copy protection, for...

    How good is civ 4?

Civ IV is great. I'm playing a game on a map of the Earth as the Chinese. Right near the beginning, I took the Mongol's capitol. Around 1500 AD I eliminated the Mongols entirely, and took all the Japanese settlements on my land. So, I have the highest score and 2nd largest military. I'm...

Performance of VB.NET, C with various compilers

You have some pretty bizarre casting going on in that printf. Look into the code I used--you want 64 integers, not 32 bit. Not sure if that's the problem though. Upon further inspection, I think the optimizer might be doing a better job than we're giving credit for... brb. Ok ok: The...
