Hi all,
I've got a Sony laptop that uses PC2-5300 with a pair of 512MB modules. I'd like to upgrade the memory to 2GB so the 512MB modules have to come out. I've got a Dell laptop that uses PC2700 memory modules, so I was thinking perhaps I could reuse the 512MB modules on the Dell. It that...
Whatever language you decide to do, try to stick with it and learn to become at least intermediate level with that particular language. That way you will be able to translate a lot of the syntactical stuff from one language to another since you already have a basic understanding of the concepts...
I want to set up the network so that if I issue "nslookup myComputerName" it would resolve to the ip address of myComputerName. Do I have to have some kind of DNS server running in the network in order to do it? I'd imagine if a DNS server is needed, then the DNS server would resolve any names...
FYI Walmart over here (Wheeling, Northen suburb of Illinois) had 2 premium and 6 core systems, and the first to line up was some lady at 6.30pm yesterday. The first 2 got the premium system, the rest got the core. I got there at around 6am just now just to try my luck (been sleepless the whole...
My good old Altec Lansing Satellite 31 has been sounding good for the past 7 years. If they have maintained the quality then I think this should be a pretty good deal.
I'm wondering how it's 5.1 sound works though, does multi-channel sound require multiple inputs?
The Chaintech seems like a good value and should provide much better sound quality. The CPU usage might abe a bit higher than Audigy's but I guess that's CL's advantage.
Can anyone recommend a sound card (below $100) that will:
1) Lower CPU usage during gaming
2) Sounds good for music
My speaker system is just stereo so I don't think I'll need all those fancy 3D sound features. I'm currently using Dell 400SC's onboard sound card (something like Soundmax)...
I was using a PNY GeForce 5200 before switching to the 9600XT and didn't have a single freeze (only occasional stutters when there are too many units in the game). Back then I was using a different machine (just upgraded to the 400SC recently right before switching the video card).
Since the...
If I didn't check out BB yesterday I wouldn't have known. Do watch out for this kind of deals because I don't think the BB over here sold too many even for $70 AR.
I don't think the BB 9600xt with $100 rebate comes with HL2. I just got one but I haven't opened it and it's not saying anything about free HL2 on the box. Tempting...
I can confirm that it's $169 - $100 MIR. I just bought one!!!! There were still 4 -5 boxes at BB in Deerfield IL so check it out today because it says expires today (11/27/2004). I also saw that the price tag on the shelve was printed at around 3am this morning.
When it comes to Java, first make sure you're using the latest JVM. Java 5 a.k.a Java 1.5 is out and from my tests it's at least 10% faster over 1.4.2 (witch is already fast).
Since it's an applet, if it's not security and data sensitive why don't you make it publicly accessible on a web page...
Ok found this:

I think it's pretty obvious from the graphics, but can someone confirm my understanding that 8x will not be hardware compatible with 16x?
Ok, so far we have conflicting info about the support. Concillian thinks it's not hardware compatible, but Peter thinks it does. Are there docs that we can refer to?
Thanks a bunch!!!
As bex0rs pointed out in the following thread the system I'm contemplating only has PCI-E 8x instead of 16x, will there be any videocard supporting 8x at all?
Thanks.

I'm about to buy this system. Seeing that it has SATA, DDR2, and Xeon with EM64T (is this just a rebadged Prescott?) and with the room to grow it seems to suite my needs. Will be using the system at home for regular stuff plus some app development and occasional gaming.
Thougnts...
Ok, because of how well Rambus treated the memory guys I've ended up with some expensive RDRAM that I don't want to waste but I think I'm stuck. I've got the system in my sig and I'd like to upgrade, but I'd like to keep the RDRAM coz I spent quite a bit of money on it. I was thinking of looking...
Also, the posted code had 2 errors:
1) Do a find on Kind GAME_STATE_GAME_OVER, I think it should be GAME_STATE_GAME_OVER
2) On the same line the if statement has only 1 "=", which would give you compiler error, change it to "=="
I tried out the game.
I'm not noticing any slowdown. I'm using JRE version 1.4.2_03 to run the compiled app. I'm running it on a P4 1.4Ghz with 640MB of ram.
Which version of jdk are you using?
It's pretty cool by the way (code is very clean for a beginner), I wish I knew how to use a...
If you have installed the jdk, look in the dir yourJdkDir\demo\jfc\Stylepad. The source files that sets the color (and font properties) of the stylepad demo is Wonderland.java. It uses Style interface, DefaultStyledDocument class, and some misc classes to create the formatted document.
I've been reading "VB & VBA in a Nutshell" and it fits me. If you're brand new to programming you might wanna get something else as it assumes prior knowledge with programming. Oh also this book is based on VB6, not VB.NET.
I'm kinda pissed off at the web sites as most of them now focus on...
Check out the Xalan (2 versions: Java or C++ based). It's freeware but will require you to spend some time to make it work for you. You would write an stylesheet using XSL and run the supplied XSLT tool (using your style sheet and the xml file as the input) and it would spit out html, or any...
I haven't tried it, but supposedly you can sign your applet (with a 3rd party certificate provider) to ask users to grant you security access to do things. I'd look into that if that's what you need.
If you are ok with not writing the loop, try the following. The checkForDupes2 would get you a Vector without the returned Vector being sorted. The checkForDupesSorted gets you sorted results. Note though the sorting might return you different things depending on the objects in the vector. If...
I've tried lowering the brightness and contrast and resolution, though they helped a little it's still pretty tiring to use the monitor. I might have been spoiled by my last monitor in terms of text sharpness (Optiquest V775 17" shadow mask monitor)
I never realized how good Eizo was (my work...
Posting this in General Hardware due to lack of response from the Video forum...
My display setup includes a new G410R coupled with a G450 OEM 32MB DDR running at 1600x1200 @85Hz.
The question has to do with 2D text quality of the monitor or the video card. I noticed the text seems to be a...

The question has to do with 2D text quality of the monitor or the video card. I noticed the text seems to be a little out of focused, but when I run Nokia or Monitorsdirect.com's test utility to...
Just got mine today. Turns out that Dell shipped my CPD-401R out on Monday but Airbone screwed it up and caused an extra day of delay ($120 worth of shipping cost and they still screws it up *sigh*).
Anyway, I was concerned about the two lines on Trinitron monitors (first time Trinitron user)...
Thanks RedShirt, you just made me spend $352 :)
After using a 17" Optiquest V775 for 5 years (bought it in the days when 17" monitors cost $700), I've decided to give Trinitron monitors a try and got the CPD-G410R. My major concern is the 2 horizontal lines that exist in all Trinitron monitors...
Can anyone tell me if it's any faster than my Virge-VX? Note it's VX so it'll take something to beat my video card. My card can do about 1 fps for GL-Quake so if this new Matrox card can do more than 2 fps I'll definitely upgrade my card when it comes out.
