Thanks for the input Spike.
The QuickBooks files are 1000MB and 600MB. Last I checked (a couple versions ago), it seemed that QuickBooks wanted to send the whole thing across the wire when someone ran a search.
Windows terminal server doesn't seem to be too much of a memory hog, I actually...
Actually running 2 company files Quickbooks 4 and 2 company files on Quickbooks 6 simultaneously, all through terminal server remote desktops. This may not be officially sanctioned, but it's easily 10x faster because the data file doesn't get shuffled around the network.
The multiple...
Thanks for the input Varun!
Good suggestion on an alternative mobo. I thought the Nforce pro's had RAID 5 built-in, but I guess that's only on the Intel Nforce 4's.
Will probably use non-ECC memory. My personal experience with non-ECC has been flawless, and the application doesn't require...
How to image your OS with Ghost and Sysprep
I just asked this same question a couple posts ago. I'm still researching myself, but the above FAQ might be a good starting point.
Complicating factor for me is going from a mirror RAID setup (D:) with seperate boot drive (C:)
What's the best way to migrate a system image between different hardware?
I've had success in the past using Acronis, but my latest attempt gets stuck in a restart loop during boot, right after the Windows logo. Does anyone know if Symantec LiveState does a better job?
Anandtech articles and forums have helped me assemble a number of desktop computers.
My goal now is to build the fastest machine for running 20 terminal server sessions worth of QuickBooks. The load on the current server occasionally maxes out the CPU during queries, but I think most speed...
Norton Ghost 9, but I don't think the clone software is the problem.
I tried installing Windows from CD to the 200GB drive and it didn't get past the first reboot.
I've been trying to clone my existing 120GB boot drive to a new 200GB drive. After after each (lenghty) clone operation, I get an "Operating system not found" message.
I'm running Windows Pro SP2 and have a A7N8X Deluxe (Nforce2) mobo with the latest BIOS update.
As a slave drive, Windows...
Yeah, this was a hot deal from way back: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=40&threadid=679787&FTVAR_MSGDBTABLE=arc
Got it from Dell for $400 shipped free.
Even with Windows XP power options set to "turn monitor off" after 5 minutes, the monitor only goes to a mode where it displays a blank screen (still obvious the CRT is on). I'm using the latest drivers (from Viewsonic).
Does anyone know of a utility/screensaver that will take a monitor into...
I'm looking to assemble a small workgroup file server. Now that the Nforce2 boards are out, what's the best bargain for an Athlon mobo with onboard IDE RAID?
I'm trying to spec out a small server to serve up a 2 Quickbooks company files to ~10 peeps.
I'm trying to decrease the delay's some people have when running Quickbooks queries. Would two WD special editions in RAID 1 (mirroring) help this at all? What Athlon mobo's do a good job with RAID?
Currently I've got:
IDE0: IBM 60gig Master, Maxtor 60gig slave
IDE1: Toshiba DVD-RW
Would I be better off with the two hard drives on seperate IDE channels?
Nah, it's not the Personal Cinema that I'm thinking of. It was called "audio drive" or something, and it provided front panel a/v i/o for nforce mobos.
I desperately need to build a replacement for my rig (see .sig below). Is there any reason the below wouldn't be a good component selection?
AthlonXP 1600
DDR266 256MB x 2
MSI K7N420 Pro
Case Fong Kai FK-603
Panaflo L1A or any other slower spinning 60mm fan
Heatsink CCK-6035D or the OCZ...
There was a news post on Anand awhile ago (can't find it now cause of crappy site usability) describing some kind of audio/video breakout box/slot to be sold after nforce mobo's are available.
Does anyone know anything more about this
The power cables for the fan disapear into the PSU itself, so it doesn't look like there's any easy way to just disconnect those. Can I physically stop the fan blades from rotating without worrying about burning it out?
What are the chances disabling the PSU fan would smoke my system or its...
The factory install fan in my aging Gateway does 4 things (in order of effectiveness):
*makes constant and obnoxious whirring noise
*vaccums my room
*cools power supply
*blows air over PII-233 (OC'd to 266) heatsink
What are the chances I could disconnect the fan entirely and not smoke...
Yeah, I just read a positive review of that at Computers.com.
It's too bad they don't make an radio frequency model, so I could change the music from anywhere in the house.
Some of the SoundBlaster Platinum cards come with remotes, and I think X10.com sells some. Are these any good? Are their other options?
It'd be nice to control Winamp from anywhere in the house, but I don't know if the software that comes with these remotes are versatile enough to use with most...
