I'm just linking to my thread on Tech Support. I thought someone in this forum could be of more help. Link to thread

gam_server (from the gamin package) is eating all my CPU...

The program gam_server (from the gamin package) is eating 100% of my CPU in debian unstable. It seems to be caught in a never-ending loop. Downgrading to testing does nothing to help. gam_server seems to be needed by konqueror to manage cookies among other things. What should I do?

Oh yeah! hehe... I had been thinking of Group Policy for domains.

    Windows boots to black screen

Installing XP from a bad CD may have been a bad idea... ...I hope you are using a legal copy. That being said, it would be legal to use your activation code with somebody else's CD (as long as it has a full version of XP and not just a system restore for an OEM computer).

System will not POST, please help.

Wait a sec, varzock; you need memory to get the thing to POST. Also, I forgot to mention that the harddrive tip only works if the power supply has some other load on it (like a case fan). Otherwise if the mobo is dead, you can fry your PSU, also. Try memory in there that you know is both good...

I'm using Fedora Core 4 and I think I want to use something else...

Back to the original question... ...I like both Debian and Ubuntu, even for those who like compiling, since the debian/rules file for a package usually contains the right build rules for debian and will usually build you a nice package that can be used with other nice packages in your system...

need help! winXP starting problem, just reboots after loading

It sounds like a virus may have screwed up your networking if it won't boot into Safe Mode w/ Networking. If you have access to another computer with a CD-burner you can usually burn the necessary installers and updates to CD.

System will not POST, please help.

Do either of you hear a beep or any sort of beep sequence? If there isn't a single short beep, it didn't POST. If there is a beep sequence it is probably, video card or RAM (on an Award BIOS, anyway). Otherwise on a new PC, that has never POSTed, I would do what you did and remove the...

How can I dissable the internet?

Group Policy is really the best way to go, IMHO. go to Start->Run gpedit.msc and change the User Policy for Internet Explorer to disallow access to it. If you're really paranoid, use NTFS permissions to disallow read access to iexplore.exe for the one user, also.

Printing XP Home --> XP Pro

Try searching the Web for "force Guest Windows XP": although I wouldn't consider myself an authority on the subject enough to answer your query myself, this search should shed some light on the problem behind the issue. BTW, I'm not sure it's ever a good idea to try printing to XP Pro from any...

    Power Supply Failure?

Professional techs have devices (which btw, cost more than a new power supply anyway) that can be used to power up a power supply with no Mobo attached and rate the voltages and health of the power supply. If you don't have any IT professional friends, though and you do suspect the power...

    Nero 6 Issue

When you say the buffer level do you mean the buffer in software (toward the middle of the burn page in regular mode) or the hardware buffer on the device (toward the bottom)? If it's the buffer on the device I would try a different piece of DVD burning hardware. (Maybe a friend has a DVD...

Forceware Drivers on PNY Verto GeForce 6800 GT

I have a SFF Shuttle SN95G5 with a PNY Verto GeForce 6800 GT graphics card in it that I got in January. A little later I upgraded to Forceware version 66.93. Ever since any time that I try to upgrade my driver version and try to run a Direct3D game I get a few seconds of gaming goodness...

I will download and use Knoppix (big download), if I can be assured that there is no way to do it while booted to the hard disk in emergency mode.

    Ubuntu desktop freezes

In the first post it could be that your hard drive is failing, or it could be that you have something like updatedb that thrashes hard drives set to run without being niced up. A few questions though: 1. Is the hard drive thrashing and making a lot of noise? (Go by the noise not the indicator...

    cant install win xp pro

You probably want an XP CD with SATA drivers slipstreamed in there. Either the one you have is bad. (You should at least be able to get to the "Press F6 to install third party SCSI drivers..." screen, or perhaps it needs the drivers slipstreamed.

    Boot.Config(ing)

It should be multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(0); other than that it looks all OK. BTW, did they change the name of boot.ini? I've always known this file as boot.ini, not boot.cfg.

    'ip address conflict...'

That would make sense if he has a a basic hub/router connecting him to his ISP. In which case I'm betting that the router has been programmed both to use the 192.168.1.100 address and to hand out a range like 192.168.1.100-192.168.1.115 or something and he needs to reprogram it to only hand out...

    xfs_db -ix /dev/hda3 complains...

I can't find a bootable cd with xfs_db on it. (It's one hell'a a big program, with xfs libs and everything.)

    'ip address conflict...'

the 192.168.x.x (with the two x's between 0 and 255) is private address space. That is probably the adress space you should be using unless you are directly connected to your ISP, in which case the 192.186.x.x address may be right. I will say that even if you had a LAN connected by a hub (and...

WindowsXP 64bit Edition: Drivers, Release Candidates, and Availability, Part 2...

I heard that 16-bit support had been dropped and that most installer programs are 16-bit. Do applications install OK on XP 64bit?

    'ip address conflict...'

Also remember that the boundaries of *your* network may not be what you imagine and that some computers may have more than one ip address assigned to them because of multiple network adapters. For instance if you are using a cable service without a router/firewall you could be conflicting with...

Hi, guys; I'm not exactly new to Linux or anything, but this one particular problem is bugging me: It's been a while since I installed my current Linux installation (Debian unstable) on two XFS filesystems (one for / and one for /boot). I recently came across a situation where I needed to...

AMD Turion Mobile CPU Info: Compiled into one thread

I think it is up to NVidia to pick up the ball. IMHO, their support and their support alone will determine the success of Turion. (What would the normal Athlon 64 or Athlon XP be without the NForce line of chipsets? Lightyears behind Intel in terms of feature support, I tell you.) BTW, what...

AMD Turion Mobile CPU Info: Compiled into one thread

Very intriguing!! At least if NVidia is doing graphics solutions for the Turion platform it means that *somebody* is going to provide a chipset with support for PCIe add-ons like MXM (since NVidia's current gen mobile graphics solutions are all MXM); that's all I care about. (although...

AMD Turion Mobile CPU Info: Compiled into one thread

Yeah, I'm kinda fond of Thinkpads myself, but I'm also fond of AMD. Too bad the two don't go together. If you don't believe me about the NVidia thing just check out the graphic in today's AT article. It at least lists NVidia as doing sth. in the way of graphics and or chipsets. I don't hate...

AMD Turion Mobile CPU Info: Compiled into one thread

I can't wait until NVidia unveils their chipset for the Turion platform. I would be happy if it supports PCIe MXM add-on cards and ExpressCards; whatever else they put in it is gravy. (I love NVidia since I'm a Linux dude. Nobody offers Linux drivers like NVidia.) I'm also *kinda*...

AMD Turion Mobile CPU Info: Compiled into one thread

I thought that Lancaster and Newark (which together will comprise Turion, am I wrong?) were both supposed to be 90nm CPUs binned for 35W and 62W, respectively. Edit: I take that back, it appears apon further inspection that only CPUs binned for 35W and under will receive the Turion branding...
