    Is this compatible?

I have a CNPS9500 - it's a good cooler. It will fit on the socket, and it should do a decent job of cooling a quad - although quads are very hot.

    Questions about water cooling

If you're going for silence, the most important thing is to have a big radiator (to maximise the surface area). Of course, you still need the rest of the loop to be decent. An MCR320 (or PA120.3 if money isn't an object), with some 800rpm Scythe S-flex fans should be good. With a decent...

Q6600 G0 - are these temps high considering the environment?

If the voltages are within 5%, they're fine. The stability of the voltage is more important than the exact voltage.

Advantages of fatter 38mm fans vs 25mm

It's kinda like having fatter tyres on a car - they let you put more power on the ground. A 38mm (thick) fan will be noisier than a 25mm at the same rpm, but it will also move more air. So if you want quiet, you're probably better with 25's. But if you just want performance, 38's are your...

    Ambient Temp & Core Temp

32C is "really hot"??? 1) 37C is fine. Anything below 60C (under load) is fine. 2) You cannot cool your CPU below ambient with air/water - you would require a refrigerated/peltier system. 3) Huh? 4) ^^^See first answer.

quad 2.4 G0 keeps fluctuating in core speed

^^As the two posts above me have said - these features only reduce your speed (and therefore power and heat) when you're not maxing out your CPU. Unless they're causing problems, leave them on.

    8500/8600 vs 6800

The 8600GTS will be better than the 6800, and it's Dx10 capable (though it doesn't sound like much of a factor to you).

Vista: Change in resolution makes the display go crazy

There are a few massive threads over on the nVidia forums about this. It's primarily a driver issue (just on the 7900 in Vista) - and nVidia doesn't want to fix it - if they do that, you're not going to buy an 8800 anytime soon. Drivers may help, but there are no promises.

    8600gts or 7900gs

The 7900 will give a bit better performance, but the 8600 will use less power and have less heat/noise, plus it is Dx10 capable.

    Core 2 E6850 vs Quad Core 6600?

Q6600! How can anyone vote for the E6850 over the Q6600. The slightly lower clocks and OC potential are nothing, compared to the extra two cores.

intel core 2 duo 1800 vs intel pentium dual core 1800

Core2Duo beats Pentium D, easy! They're both Dual-Core, but the Core2 is a much newer and much more intelligent design. The C2D's run faster, and cooler, and you can get a Quad-core if you want.

    Q6600 vs E6850 electricity costs???

In any semiconductor, most of the energy put into it will be converted into heat, while a very small amount goes back into the mobo. Since the same amount of power will go back into the mobo for both of these CPU's, then the difference in power draw will be the same as the difference in heat...

To AMD or Not AMD that is the question

Link: www.froogle.com ------ If you just want a mid-range system that runs well at stock, then AMD is a better choice. You can get the same performance at a lower price than the Intel alternative. But if you want maximum performance, or you're an overclocker, then go with Intel.

can I overclock a q6600 with these ambients

I live in Australia, and (since I don't have airconditioning) I can only OC in winter. Last summer we had days where it got up to 50C (~120F). If you can keep the load temps below 60C, you should be okay. If you still want to OC, then since the ambient air temp is the problem, you'll...

    A8N-SLI and new CPU

I have the A8N-SLI deluxe. I had the 1014, and IIRC, the Vcore settings on the 1014 BIOS didn't work. But the 1017 (which I'm currently running) seems good - Vcore control is fine, and my X2 is supported. If you want your system to be able to use all 4GB of your RAM, you'll need a 64-bit OS...

    E6850 or Q6600

    1) Doesn't matter. 2) Today, the E6850 may be better. Tomorrow, the Q6600 will be better. Some games (i.e. SupCom) can already utilise quad-cores. 3) Definitely the Q6600. In three years time, a dual-core will seem positively ancient.

Looking at stretching out my 939 system.

I have an X2 4200+ ... it's a good CPU. SupCom will definitely benefit from it. And you can always just overclock it back up to the speed of your current 4000+. BtW, the X2 4200+ is basically dual 3500+'s.

do i have to get vista ultimate64bit inorder to optimize a Cord 2 Duo cpu?

If you buy an upgrade version of Vista, you can install 32-bit now and upgrade to 64-bit later for free. (this isn't the case with OEM) Personally I'm running 32-bit, but that's because I got it the day it came out. Installing 64-bit now is fairly safe - most applications now work with...

    Q6600 vs E6850 electricity costs???

Go the Q6600 - at idle, the difference in power consumption will be negligible. If you get the G0 (95W), the power difference will be 30W (at full load). That's half of one standard light globe. Replace a 60W incandescent globe with a 15W fluoro, and enjoy the power of a quad-core with...

older gaming system. new gpu or start from scratch?

Anything more than a 6800/7600 is probably too much. If you want more speed beyond the 6800/7600, you're going to need a bigger CPU and more RAM, at which point you basically need to start from scratch.
  35. I

    Dual core for gaming?

Dual Core for sure! X2's aren't bad, but if you're building a system from scratch, then Core 2 Duo is probably the way to go.

SLI with 2 different video cards?

    Opteron 165 or X2 3800+

The opty is only good if the rest of your system can OC with it. You RAM won't help in getting it there. I have a mate with a 165 @ 2.5, on aftermarket cooling, which isn't bad.

Quotes for a custom file server

Some good MoBo's have up-to 8 SATA ports. That should be heaps. :) RoD EDIT: NAS = Network Attached Storage - it's basically an external hard drive(s), that attaches to a network, rather than to a USB/Firewire port.
