2) Making partition D bootable. This depend on the size of parttition C and your motherboard capabilities.

Somethin like this is happenning to me.
I think the problem is in the Ntdetect.com and Ntldr files. Windows XP SP1 install new ones that doesnt work with Windows 2000; the old (Windows 2000) doesn't work with XP SP1 either.
Windows 2000:
Ntdetect.com 34,468 bytes 15.12.1999...
Sometimes, at home, I need to open and close the cd tray so it will be running (light on) at boot time. If not the bios wouldnt recognise a boot cd.
