    Newbie question about E6600 multiplier

I tried it on an older 3.4GHz Prescott, no luck there. Thanks for the update; it must be a recent feature.

    Newbie question about E6600 multiplier

I tried your suggestion (going to laptop) on my E6600 and you're right--that's pretty neat. This can't be specific to the E6600 though? I run CPU-Z too and can see it toggle up and down depending on the load. I run my PC at 300FSB but just about anything should work I'd say.

    Patriot 5600+ at 7100+

I found out I could get it a little higher (833MHz) at 5-5-5-15 and 333FSB. (So, the CPU is at 3.0GHz.) However, once I do this, a reboot of the computer makes it power cycle for a few seconds before it comes back up. The crash while playing Quake was unrelated apparently, since I played for...

    Patriot 5600+ at 7100+

In case anyone else was following this, I asked before what everyone though might be better (I did come up with my own answer): 4-4-4-12 @ 800MHz, 2.20V 5-5-5-12 @ 891MHz, 2.20V On Patriot 5600+ (700MHz) RAM... That seems like a good overclock for some older RAM. I'm happy. :) I...

Memory overclock Patriot PC2-5600+ to 7100

To summarize here quickly, I just made a system upgrade where I swapped out my mobo and processor. The RAM I bought a year and a half ago (Patriot PC2-5600+) is rated to 700MHz, at 4-3-3-12 timings, 2.2Vmax. I had run it in my older mobo at 4-3-3-10, 667MHz (5400), 1.9V for over a year...

    8800 gts $382 OTD at dell.com, 8800gtx $534

I did an quick chat session with a Dell salesperson to ask the question "what is the warranty on this item"? And to my surprise... "Unfortunately, there is no warranty with this item." No warranty on a $600 video card. Does the Dell rep not know what they were talking about or is this...

8800GTX/S exhaust air or draw it in?

I couldn't tell from the picture which way the fins were sloped, or which way the fan rotated. My guess is that if the fan isn't polarity protected, a manufacturer could run the fan either direction but it's more efficient one direction vs. another. I currently have an X800XL which blows...

8800GTX/S exhaust air or draw it in?

Thanks for the quick reply; I'll look into more intake fan CFM while evaluating other options.

8800GTX/S exhaust air or draw it in?

This will probably be a quick thread once someone comes up with an answer, but I can't find it anywhere else. Do the new nVidia 8800 cards draw air from the back and exhaust it into the case, or do they draw air from the case and exhaust it out the back? Near Christmas I'll be doing an...

    SCSI 15k U320 Cards?

Why do you say that the 36 GB Raptors are a waste of money ribbon13? They are more $$$/GB, but if you're going for $$$/GB, you're better off with a 300GB SATA drive then. The 36GB drive has only one platter and 2 heads, instead of 2 platters and 4 heads. That doesn't mean the 36GB version...

    SCSI 15k U320 Cards?

If you are starting out with a system, most likely you would get more for your money with a 36GB Raptor boot drive and a 73GB Raptor application drive. (SATA) If you really are doing video editing, web or file serving, or anything else that loads multiple files at the same time, then SCSI is...

Warm: 60GB Samsung 2.5" Notebook Hard Drive $100AR

Update: This deal is dead now, but CompUSA now has the 80GB Centon drive for $130 AR. Still a warm deal, but slightly better $/GB than the 60GB if you waited it out.

Warm: 60GB Samsung 2.5" Notebook Hard Drive $100AR

I don't see why not. Some of the older notebook drives are thicker than 9.5mm, but now that everything is 9.5mm you should be OK. The hardest part is getting your data from the old drive to the new drive (just get an external USB enclosure for it and you can still use it for other things.)...

Warm: 60GB Samsung 2.5" Notebook Hard Drive $100AR

Thanks for the hints on Newegg and Directron. I've bought parts from them in the past (Directron more than Newegg.) I looked up the warranty on both of these web sites and they are both OEM drives. I would be very careful buying a notebook drive with only a 1 year warranty. At work, we...

Warm - Lian Li PC-60 $80 plus shipping

I bought this same exact case in the link above ~2 years ago at CompUSA, but mine doesn't have a fan on top. (I needed a new case to complete the project, last minute.) Regarding that USB door in the front, has anyone found a replacement part that has 2 USB and a Firewire port in it? There...

Warm: 60GB Samsung 2.5" Notebook Hard Drive $100AR

I missed the last 2.5" Notebook drive deal from Dell when the 100GB Momentus (Seagate) drive went on sale some time ago for $149. But, I did find a Samsung drive at CompUSA for $100AR this week. It is actually boxed as a "Centon Notebook Hard Drive", but their web site and the sticker on the...

    ATTN All PRESCOTT Owners

I'm thinking about making one last upgrade to my socket 478 mobo, and then I'll reuse my 2.4B elsewhere. (Yes, this mobo will handle 800MHz FSB processors, I just have not used them yet.) So it sounds like the "Prescott is too hot" is a bunch of hype? The 3.4EE (Extremely Expensive) is...

Overclocking an older slot 1 processor

Ok, to reply to danny's suggestion, I did find an alternate thread here that mentions an "upgradeware" Tualatin adapter. This was under $25, but when I emailed the only distributor on it they said that it's not listed as compatible for my computer (which is a Dell B866r by the way). I assume...

Overclocking an older slot 1 processor

Has anyone here had a Slot 1 processor based system (for example, I have the P3 866 w/ 133MHz FSB) and successfully overclocked it at one time? I am looking for web sites that may still have info on this, and realistic gains that you can get. I'm thinking of pushing that older 866 I have a...

    Testing firewire cables

I just attached a firewire device (the first) to my computer that doesn't work. It could be several things, but I want to check the firewire cable. However, I can't find any reference at all on the internet on how a cable should be wired. Just the wiring of the port or cable end. What...

    Syquest 270 ATA/IDE Jumper settings

Nevermind; I did get it working on the first jumper setting (which must be master.) It's a PIO mode drive, so I won't be using it that often unless I really have to.

    Syquest 270 ATA/IDE Jumper settings

A friend of mine gave me one of his ATA (IDE) Syquest 270 drives that he uses in multiple computers. I have some space in an empty removeable drive bay. But, we don't know what the jumper settings are. There's a label on a chip that says "Master/Slave E1" and it points to a row of jumpers...

    Abit WI-1P serial ports

I have the Abit WI-1P motherboard. It's a great socket 478 mobo. I decided to stick with socket 478 due to my SCSI drives, PCI-Express doesn't have any SCSI cards that I could find. PCI-X SCSI cards are reasonably priced finally. I doubt few have this mobo, but if you do, have you used any...

    Fastest 478 pin Prescott

I wanted to keep this 478 mobo going awhile before making the move, so it sounds like I should buy sometime near the end of this year. I have seen CPU prices go up on the "end of the a line" model probably because they are not as common as the slower speeds. (And people like me.) :) I have...

I need 4 good, cheap 24 port Gigabit Ethernet switches

I know that SMC supports Jumbo frames in their lower-price models; if you're on a budget. I haven't look too closely at them however. EDIT: I looked up the 24-port unmanaged version; it goes for <$800. It sounds like you're going for something serious though with those many ports. Maybe you...

Cable/DSL router w/ Gigabit LAN switch

Ah, OK. I've always wondered why LAN is so CPU intensive when it gets over 100BT. For comparison, two ATA/IDE hard drives could do ~120MB/s on one channel (PATA or SATA--take you pick) and use very little CPU. It's probably a DMA thing. Thanks.

Cable/DSL router w/ Gigabit LAN switch

Thanks Jack; I figured that I'll have to wait awhile...I get almost 9MB/s to my Linux server downstairs over the usual 100BT connection, so I can't complain too much. 1000BT isn't nearly 10X faster, but it will eventually get better. Either that or I'll give up someday and add another Gigabit...

Cable/DSL router w/ Gigabit LAN switch

Do any of the Cable/DSL router manufacturers make a router+switch combo box that has Gigabit Ethernet on the LAN side? Preferably supporting Jumbo Frames? Hey it's my wish; I can make it a big one. :) I have not found such a combination yet. 100BT is fine for me on the the WAN port, as it...

    Gigabyte GA-8KNXP Ultra-64

I have two U320 drives on a U160 card now (15K RPM); I might add a third in the future. PCI extreme would take care of that bottleneck just as well as integrated U320; once someone makes a SCSI PCI extreme card for it. In the mean time, I had no idea that Gigabyte released a flurry of next-gen...

    Gigabyte GA-8KNXP Ultra-64

Cool; thanks for the info. I see that Asus and Gigabyte released some new mobo's as well in the Intel line. Part of me would love to give AMD a try; maybe I'll give it a short wait (like a month) and see if anything newer AMD comes out w/ SCSI for example. With the Ultra-64 mobo I could...

    Gigabyte GA-8KNXP Ultra-64

So you'd rather go for 64-bit than onboard SCSI in other words? I don't remember what Socket754 is; maybe that's Athalon. Is it really worth 64 bit when no apps are 64 bit and you need a different version of the OS correct?

    Gigabyte GA-8KNXP Ultra-64

It seems that the flood gates have opened on this mobo. As of 6/19, several places are selling it. Now the decision time, do I wait for one of the newer processors--and get a better SCSI interface then, or take a chance on the 8KNXP Ultra-64 now. :)

    Gigabyte GA-8KNXP Ultra-64

Has anyone seen the Ultra-64 version of Gigabyte's latest mobo yet for sale? I'm wondering about how much. (Besides LOTS.) :) I may either go for the U-64, or wait for the Pentium-775 CPUs to come out. But with the U-64, I can reuse most of my existing hardware. Thanx

    Gigabyte 8KNXP Ultra questions

Edit: I deleted most of this post as it seems that Gigabyte JUST released the Ultra-64 version of this mobo, which answers most of my questions. Hopefully they have fixed the SCSI RAID problem. Thanks.

Intel 820 to 850 upgrade RDRAM question

Thanks for the info Dahak and Oyeve. My old 820 board does have two identical sticks of ECC PC800, 256MB each, so I should be all set. Thanks for the offer Oyeve; I figure though by the time I am ready to upgrade my upstairs 2.4GHz processor upstairs, that the 850 mobo should cost around $50...

Intel 820 to 850 upgrade RDRAM question

I have an older Dell B866r that I currently use for a web/file/game server. It has an Intel-based 820 board as far as I can tell, probably a variation of the VC820 without built-in audio. The processor is a Slot 1 P3 866. This mobo uses the fast (for the time) but expensive PC800 ECC RDRAM...
