Opinions on best software/linux distro for my hardware

Thanks all, sounds like I would need a new card to go with linux & MythTV is the best option on linux. I'll look into Myth. It would be a wired network, so good there. Just a quick question on the tuner thing, it it just the tuner that is incompatable, or the svid & composite in as well? I...

Opinions on best software/linux distro for my hardware

I am curently using ATI Mediacenter on XP Pro, but it is real poor for MP3 playback. I'm using itunes for mp3 and like the directory structure orginization (artist, album) it uses, but it isn't integrated with multimedia center (I have to switch out to the desktop, which is a pain with the...

Adding a string to excel data. . .

I agree with the concat concensus. If you can't mess with the column structure, just do it on a seperate sheet, copy the results and use paste special, text only to put the new names in the proper column.

    How to input S/PDIF?

The benefit of spdif is the sound quality is as good as the source where the older analog connections could have distortion from the sound card or other components. You need a quality set of digital computer speakers, or a home theater receiver for it to be of real value, imho. Most soundcards...

Try downloading the drivers from your motherboard manufacture instead of realtech directly. It may have to do with their implementation. That's my best guess :) Good luck...

    X700 mobile vs Go 6600

not that synthetic benchies are the best guage, but I get 1941 with my 6600 go on 71.70 drivers no oc. There are different versions of 6600, mine is mid model with 300 core & 600 memory and 128 ram. IMHO buy whichever comes in the laptop you like better for other features. There isn't a huge...

    ATI vs ATI AIW

For PVR you could also look at This from Futureshop, but it is 3/4 the cost of the AIW your looking at. And NCIX has This, but their site is damn slow tonight. Same card that Traire linked to (ATI hardware mpeg2 encoding) just different reseller. Note these do not work with ATI Multimedia Center...

Best bang for the buck laptop upgrade

Hmm 2 years more for 50% more money... think I'll risk the Samsung (which is 8M cache as well and 3 years waranty). That is almost enough for the other 512 :) Fbrdphreak, I read the article you linked (actualy before my post). It is a good read. If I could have found a similar article on 512...

Best bang for the buck laptop upgrade

Thanks all, good feedback as always :) Generally I'm getting the concensis is that the Hard Drive should improve performance more than another 512 stick of ram as most applications including games don't need more than 512 to keep from hitting the pagefile (thanks Ken90630 for reading my mind)...

Best bang for the buck laptop upgrade

I just wish I was in the US when buying this stuff. A 7200 drive is up over $300 and 512 memory is about $80. So you can see why I really would like some better info on the effect of each upgrade. One only has me not eating fast food for a month, the other has me eating KD for a month :)...

Quick question about laptop hard drive speeds

You may be best off starting with the needs for things like portability, battery life, screen size, game play before getting into hard drive speed. That can always be upgraded later, but the others may not be as easily changed without replacement. Just my opinion of course. The 7200 drives are...

Best bang for the buck laptop upgrade

I've been searching forums here and at LaptopLogic for a good thread on this topic & haven't found a clear answer. I have a Toshiba M40 JM3 Specs here I have found there is a fair amount of hard drive operation playing battle for middle earth between game areas, causing slow load times. I...

have any of you had this problem**solved**

I know if I was using a dual monitor setup, and if the resoluton of one monitor was less than the other, that the one with the smaller resolution would scroll. Not sure if that applies here. I also think that there is the option to read the resolution info from the monitor, which may cause...

LOL I've gotta remember that one. I think you have a lower WAF level ther than I do, I had a hard time getting the HTPC in the room even though it is in a Antec Sonata and fits in with the reciever nicely!

    backlight gone!

Depends on how savy you are with electronics. No point you trying to fix it if you can't get parts due to age of the laptop and can't get around it by making a connector or soldering. If that is the case, wait till it stops working again & get a shop to repair it if you need it, or you could...

    Hard Lock

I'll take another tact here. Did you uninstall the ATI drivers before installing the new card (doubt it is the issue, never know though)? Did you swap or move anything else when installing the card? Could the psu power connection be loose or the plug bad (sometimes the connecters get pushed back...

Does anyone use a laptop as their SOLE machine for home?

You're better off with the VGA than s-vid. s-vid has low resolution and isn't digital either. I bought my new laptop as my upgrade, I was still using an A-XP & 9700P. I didn't sell that, it is now my HTPC.

    VIA mini-ITX cpu's

I'm just wondering what the total is for the components is that you're looking at. I'm thinking something between 400-700. There are laptops in that range (upper end) that would be as powerful as what you're looking at (play dvd's, internet, email, music, no gaming). I didn't do much searching...

    help me out please?

Do some searching to verify. I would look at a 6600GT. Most SFF PSU are quite capable of any AGP card. Space is usually limited though, check card lengths & widths for some of the NVidia cards.

question about the turtle beach usb sound card

I don't know positively, however it is real doubtful that the adapter has an analog to digital converter, it looks just large enough for the led for the optical output. The reviews I read indicated that it was 5.1 output dolby digital & DTS, which can't be encoded from 2 channel audio (only...

question about the turtle beach usb sound card

It looks more like they are using a single jack for both analog and digital, with a small adapter to allow the digital connection. Note that the adapter is mostly plastic until the tip. The tip would be the spdif connections. The reviews on the site indicate there are no inputs.

    ATI ALL-IN-WONDER driver question

If it is like the rest of the AIW versions, the drivers for the video portion are the same as the regular card. You shouldn't have a problem. The multimedia center and capture drivers are seperate from the video drivers. You may want to install the DVD if you want to watch dvd's.

    Any Ideas on Memory Speeds?

I don't believe this laptop uses DDR2 memory. Here is a link to kingston's memory used in the laptop. I can't see why DDR 400 wouldn't work, although I haven't found a way to increase the FSB or timings to make use of it if you did purchase the faster memory. I have the next model down...
