    How do I reduce horsepower?

A more open exhaust, either through a larger pipe or more open muffler, will help fuel economy and improve mileage. I'm assuming it's naturally aspirated, so a turbocharger would also increase fuel economy by increasing the air pressure on the intake side. A more open intake can also help...

    New system build

Building a new system for the holidays. I will be ordering the case/PSU today and the rest on 12/10. It is entirely for gaming, nothing more and nothing (hopefully) less. I have a budget of about $1100. Total system power draw is of no consequence (power is a flat rate/included in rent), and It...

Any major flaws with this monitor?

Offical page Newegg's page PCmag review Note that I will be using it primarily for gaming, but I cannot afford a monitor too much more expensive than this one. I do, of course, have a DVI on my video card (9700 pro), if that matters. It's $180 after mail-in rebate, which I'm willing to...

NB fan died, can it be replaced?

My Abit Kv8's northbridge chipset cooling fan died, and it doesn't have any heatsink (just a spreader and the fan) so it is, of course, overheating. Can this be replaced from a general retailer(Newegg, ZZF, etc.) or do I need the specific part from Abit? IE will a NB heatsink (such as This...

How to underclock an old A64?

The exact motherboard can be found Here. The CPU And I don't know the RAM, but it's DDR400 at stock speeds and latency. STORY I have a problem in that my CPU is running too hot (65C under load) and I'd like it to run a bit cooler. I figure I can accomplish this with a simple...

Possible to install SATA drivers from CD?

Will it see a USB floppy as drive A: ? I've already tried using a CD with the drivers on it, it doesn't work. I was putting it in the floppy slot, it has about 30 pins as opposed to the 40 on stantard IDE. The problem is in the slot - it has one too many pins. There is supposed to be a...

Possible to install SATA drivers from CD?

I might be able to borrow a USB floppy, but will the installer support that? I have spare floppy drives and cables, but the motherboard's floppy connector doesn't fit them, it has a pin in a place it shouldn't (compared to other MBs)

Possible to install SATA drivers from CD?

I've recently recieved a brand-spanking-new Seagate 7200.7 80GB. Unfortunately, I got an SATA drive. Which is now biting me, my installation of WinXP, and my patience in their proverbial arses. I pressed F6 at the start of the install, aand it came up with a message to insert the disk...

    Will SATA NCQ cause problems?

Not shure - never used anything but PATA for storage. Just wondering whether or not it would interfere. I'd assume that SATA is bootable, but not entirely shure about NCQ compatability with older non-NCQ boards.

    Will SATA NCQ cause problems?

I did a search and it turned up people having problems with a solo SATA disk - getting "no IDE HDD installed" errors and such. I'm considering Seagate's 7200.7 SATA150 NCQ, as I plan on using this drive for atleast 5 years. I was wondering : will having SATA or NCQ make this drive unable to...

System Boot times skyrocket (help thread)

System Specs Literally overnight (14/17 to 18/05) the system began a very odd problem: On boot, single normal beep (no beep code), POST begins. It stops at the "Memory Testing" line, but not always (Sometimes, though a minority of the time, it stops at the line with the CPU's...

Will the newer GeForce6 cards have a longer stay? ........

Even so, I doubt it will have the staying power that the R3X0(9500/9700/9800 series did. After all, they were released in 2002.. and even underclocked (like mine) they can still handle all modern games quite easily on higher settings.

Build a PC <=$1000 for hires photos..suggestion please.

That's what web storage is for. Using RAID to store files is not necesary. Web storage, zip disks, etc are the answer (in my opinion). It's cheaper to have 3 copies of something than to have 1 copy on RAID (it's also safer too, there's a higher chance of a freak accident involving your PC than...

    128 or 256 MB GFX?

Historically speaking, the difference between two cards that are idnetical core/memory speeds, chipset, etc that differ only in memory will perform almost identically. The most famous example is the Radeon 9800Pro (also 128 and 256MB editions) performing almost identically, even though the 256MB...

$60 to spend on my new PSU...

Antec gets my vote. Really, you'll want to stay away from generic PSUs. Also, realize that a solid 380Watt will provide more stable voltages that a cheap 500W, and this is generally the main concern for power supplies. Also, post your system so we cna know wat kind of wattage is necesary.

    Dangerous temps or worried user?

Wow- my system is indeed a testimant to the advantages of cleaning a system- my load temps are about 57-61C at stoick voltage and clock speeds Albeit, my house is being worked on, with oodles of dust.

WinXP- How to get sound from the internal speaker?

Jeez... another joke thread? If your serius the answer is: you can't get anything more than diagnostic beep codes out of it. If you could find the resistance and max wattage, you could makea make-shift speaker... I guess.

    Virtual memory

If you have 4 gigs of RAM for non-professional use, you need to be shot summarily. Really though, the pagefile+RAM size cannot exceed 4GB (Im assuming this has not changes since Win95x32, as I haven't tried since)

New install and mouse lags again!!!!!!!Update

Perhaps I'm missig some blatantly obvious reasons for not using a PS/2 mouse, but why not try using a PS/2 mouse? Borrow one from a friend, or pick up a cheapy and try it out and check for this problem. My brother uses an MX500(maybe 510?) USB mouse, and I cannot stand the lagtime for the...

Please advise on my $2,000 Intel Build ;)

MY suggestion (and yes I did see the thread title) would be to move down (price-wise alteast, it's actually faster in performance) to a socket 939-3200+ with a better video card. Note also that with the A64 rig you are a bit more future proof because you can have SLI (2 video cards, get one now...

    AMD64 3000 or Intel 3.0ghz

Actually, the 3.0C to 754-3000+ is a rather apples-to oranges comparison. To be fair, you'd have to compare the 3.0C to the 3400+, as they are both priced about the same (the 3.0C is $219, the 3400+ is $203, but there isn't an A64 between 203 and 225) Thus, AMD wins this one, hands down.

Steel milling/beveling... where can this be done?

Oddly enough, I haven't even seen this thing yet. I'm just in the design stage now, the plate is at a relative's house. The entire plate is indiana at the moment, he says its over 200lbs. Obviously I am not going to use it all, as I do have to pay him for what I take (scrap value)

Sapphire X800 no longer sensing molex connection

Damnit! Well this is disgruntling... A 1$ yard-sale lamp took out a 400$ video card. Either way, I've now decided to A: Always go newegg/ZZF on hardware; B: Use real PSUs (IE antec, enermax, OCZ) and C: replace surge protectors after 12 years (at minimum).

Sapphire X800 no longer sensing molex connection

The cuircit breaker flipped when a lamp was plugged in, my machine was behind surge protection (crappy one). Why not have optical SATA drives?

Since most new motherboards have SATA, and many of them support more than 8 drives, and the bandwidth is not really an issue for optical drives, why not have CD and DVD drives on the SATA bus? That way we would be more future proof in our purchases, assuming that PATA doesn't stay on...

You've described a 2.1 channel setup, wit hthe 2 channels (left and right) and the .1 being the subwoofer. Assuming that you buy a decent motherboard, it will have onboard sound, which will support your speakers and let you save some cash. Many people (myself included) can't tell the sound...
