Hard drive fragmentation articles: Taken from http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/ZDM/story?id=472194
Reduce hard drive growing pains. As you fill up your hard drive, Windows places new files wherever there's room. Sometimes...

Anybody who can't post more than a sentence and tosses in random comments will always be a part of the peanut gallery. You're right up there with the guy who goes in for sloppy seconds with the drunken chick at the party. Crummy thing is you find out it?s your sister. You guys are...
We're down to 1 issue here. Fragmentation. Also those are some great tips pouring in from the peanut gallery. Pure wisdom.
As for examples Bsobel.., I'd love to setup a camcorder to catch all these "moments" on tape. Digital evidence? I'm not quite prepared to do so but it may be a last...
We're keeping the thread going by getting various feedback from other members and or people. I don't think we need to confuse the audience by adding additional phrases to the question. The synopsis of this problem is condensed in the post I made and I think thats the low and heavy of what we're...
We're going to keep this thread going :D
I've enjoyed all the 1 liners from the peanut gallery. Keep em coming.
As for the defrag issue..I dug into it a little more and found some interesting responses from some qualified people.
Thoughts:
#1 "Comment from pjedmond" feedback...
Thank-you Jack & Harvey for seeing the light. I probably should have spent more time writing the initial post but I was hoping for a discussion and boy have I received one.
I suppose this is some sort of initiation into the anandtech realm. I enjoy it. :D
I've also limited my sig for all...
We can teach an old dog new tricks.
He sounds like some of the microsoft staff who claim their work is perfect only to release update after update trying to fix exploits and problems.
I originally said it will make your system run better. Then I mentioned I've encountered crashes from...
You're defending XP likes you're part of the Gates family. Those articles to also apply to XP. They don't happen as often but you claim XP is perfect with heavily defragged HD's.
We agree the old OS's had major problems with this. But problems still occur with severely fragmented drives. They...
There are many documented cases of errors and crashes on Windows caused by fragmentation. A crash takes place, for instance, when attempting to run CHKDSK on a highly fragmented drive.
According to MS KB Q160451 and Q165456, there are several situations where fragmentation causes a system...
Here we go again...
Fragmentation is a major factor in slow boot times. Many cases are on record of machines taking twenty or thirty minutes to reboot that previously took only a minute or two. This situation can deteriorate to the point where a machine will take hours or not boot up at all...
Yep..many are risky.
However i've had my system like that for ages with no issues. Great for music production, basic usage and heavy gaming.
Coffee time :)
There goes bsobels white towel. Falsehood? lol. Go smoke another bowl.
Ask the average computer user if they know what defrag is. Many will mention to you that they've never done one. I fix computers for a living and we encounter this scenario several times per month. The HD is so badly...
Windows Xp is basically tweaked out of the box. This isn't the 9x days. fORM---agreed but you can always do more
When actually reading a file the head will be moving all over the place anyway because of IOs to other files. So if the head is moving all over the place anyway fragmentation...

---------------------------------That is exactly my point. You have enough experience to possibly understand what the program is telling you. However, your recommendation is that Noobs use this tool, which is not geared towards them.

Yes, exactly the type of tool your Noob user will use and understand. How about recommending something usefull, like things to do to lower one's chances of getting spyware on the system in the first...
I'm still waiting to hear about all your great ideas. Maybe "Bsobels Elite" guide to windows? Instead you refer to my suggestions as crap and call them "dangerous".
Then again you're from the US of A where "Guns" aren't considered dangerous.
Keep diggin yourself deeper. Your colors are...
I guess a few people are confused about what the term "Noob" means. With a status of elite member and 4970 posts one should no better. You knock the post yet provide no intelligent argument or facts to back up your claim. Maybe offer some of your amazing tricks to helping xp run smoothly. I'd...
Some of these tips are obviously located in the forums so I will give credit where credit is due. If I missed your post it's purely because I missed it. The site is huge!
Install the OS (ie XP) on it's own drive. 30-50gb is plenty
All programs on a seperate drive. All games on a seperate...

2) Double check that ram is properly inserted.
3) Connect the video card in the 1st PcX slot.
4) Properly install updates mobo updates first, followed by OS updates and leave the video card updates to the...
The firewall works fine. I dumped XP firewall and turned on the NV one.
It pops up with permission tabs from time to time and keeps any mystery programs from connecting.
Great for blocking silly programs like Quicktime, Real player and other useless media players.
