Also I want to add, is there any performance benefit from running the memory at 1:1 with the CPU? Coming from AMD and Socket939, running in "dual channel" mode was important. Is this the case with Core2?
Great thread.
I just want to make sure I'm on the right track.
I just installed a new ABIT IP35-E along with 2GB G-skill DDR400, and E2160.
All I have done so far is:
1. Set C1E to "disabled"
2. Set CPU ratio to 333x9 (3Ghz)
3. Set CPU Voltage to 1.425
4. Set Memory divider to...
You are right I thought about Quad Core. But the fact that I'll also be doubling my RAM in addition to getting a C2D I figured I'll go ahead and see what this improvement gives me first.
I went ahead and bit just now. Can't fight the upgrade bug :).
I figure if I need more speed down...
My Opty is a 165 Dual core, About an identical processor to your X2 4200+.
Hmm I'm starting to have 2nd thoughts based on what you said. I don't even game much, mostly thinking of upgrading because I multitask quite a bit.
Thanks. Would a 400W PSU be adequate for this setup with a 8800 GTS or 8800GT?
Also, would this be a worthwhile upgrade from a S939 system (Opteron @ 2ghz) ?
Basically I'm looking to replace my 7900GTS. I am fine with the performance but it's a dual slot card.
I'm trying to do an even swap after selling my 7900GTS but right now there seems to be a huge gap in graphics cards. There are 8800s ($300+) and 8600s ($100). Is there anything out there...
Is one noticeably better than the other. Obviously I'd like to get the USB card for it's mobility/ easy installation/ plug and play etc. But will the USB network adapter take a hit in speed or reliability?
For reference I'm looking into the following...
There's your problem, it is impossible to get an HD signal from an S-Video cable. No matter what the source, even if it's 1080p, it will end up being 480i (SD) by the time it goes through that S-Video cable.
You must hook it up with either Component or HDMI.
It should be fairly easy to tell if the material you were watching was SD or HD.
Perhaps I can help you out:
What program were you watching?
What channel was it on?
What is your TV connected to?
Nothing is moving to 1080p except videogame systems and HDDVD/BluRay, and even then it's questionable whether you'd notice the difference on those mediums in a 37" TV.
The K8NGM2 works great as a gaming system, it just won't be an upgradable one. You could wait for a comprable C2D mATX motherboard but I dont know if one as good as the K8NGM2 will ever be available.
A hot heatsink is much better than a cool one. The only things you can probably do are to add additional fans, replace the fans with better ones, and make sure you keep the system dust free. I wouldn't mess with the HS.
Are you building from scratch? If so I'd say minimum should be AM2 (or a S939 system as I'm sure there'll be plenty of deals to be had especially in the FS/T forums). If you already have a Northwood and motherboard lying around then that's different but I don't see there being much value in...
Agreed.
The Intellimouse 3.0 is a timeless mouse and I can't wait to upgrade mine to this new version. I've purchased more expensive mouse over the years but none of them could live up to the intellimouse 3.0.
I installed a AV-710, but that was specifically for the SPDIF out to my receiver. If I had the spdif bracket I would have likely not purchased a sound card. Unfortunately when these motherboards were first shipping MSI did not include them.
Thanks!
I took your advice and those in the MSI K8NGM2 motherboard thread. I cranked up the FSB to 250mhz and gained about 1000 pts in 3dmark. Feel like I just got a free upgrade :).
Thanks for the vote of confidence subcode. The opty hit 250fsb without a hitch and the difference in performance is truly impressive.
You mentioned you are using PC3200. Are you overclocking it or running it a stock speeds. Wouldn't running it in Dual channel mode yield much more...
What a find this thread is. I was actually one of the first people to get the MSI 6150 and it's great to see so many people enjoying it.
I have a question of my own.
I have an Opteron 165 in my K8NGM2 and currently it's at stock speeds. I'd like to OC it and since there are no v.core...
Well my MB (MSI 6150) doesn't have v.core adjustments.
I was thinking I could also go the route of upgrading my ram to DDR500 and just jack up the FSB to 250mhz. But is an Opty pretty much guaranteed to hit 2200mhz at stock voltage?
I have an Opty 165 and Monarch now has the X2 4600+ for a mere $260. Most people are upgrading from single core processors with the new price cuts (which is a no brainer), but how about dual core to dual core +600mhz?
I disagree.
And with the merger the chipsets can only improve. We will likely see the stability and performance we have come to expect from intel chipsets paired with intel cpus.
