Please help newbie. 1st build attempt goes horribly wrong.

So, Waylay00 - what did you do? Buy an identical stick (same brand), or put in any ol' PC-3200? TIA

Please help newbie. 1st build attempt goes horribly wrong.

So the final verdict appears to be DOA RAM. Now a couple questions for anyone who may have experience with RMAs: Will Newegg let me RMA one stick even though I bought them in a twin-pack? Wouldn't ya know I threw away the plastic pack they came in just yesterday? Figures. Wonder if...

Please help newbie. 1st build attempt goes horribly wrong.

I used memtest86+. It found that particular stick of RAM to be defective. The other one checked out fine. Would upping the voltage and/or lowering the settings over-ride the fact that the module is a POS? I wouldn't think so, but...

Please help newbie. 1st build attempt goes horribly wrong.

You're right. However, I'm also wondering if it really IS bad, or if the board socket is bad. I believe the latter to be less probable. So I'm testing the one stick of 512 Mushkin now with memtest and will put the other in and test it when this one's finished.

Please help newbie. 1st build attempt goes horribly wrong.

Just an update to thank y'all. It looks like I'm okay now, just minus 512 RAM. That's a pain to have to RMA that. I just threw the case it came in away yesterday. Then I'd have to wait another week for my RAM. I've got half a mind to try to install that other stick of RAM anyway and see...

Please help newbie. 1st build attempt goes horribly wrong.

10-4 on that. I wish I would have had the slipstreamed SP2 up and ready, but the machine acted like it wanted to go ahead with the install, and I wasn't about to stop. If this SP2 install goes awry , I'll put together the slipstreamed version.

Please help newbie. 1st build attempt goes horribly wrong.

WinXP SP1 installed! So it was just a bad RAM stick. Now I?m afraid to install SP2. I went ahead and installed the ASUS chipset drivers from the motherboard CD. I hate to, but I guess I need to do it. Here goes nothing?.

Please help newbie. 1st build attempt goes horribly wrong.

Thanks everyone. You're a huge help. I took one stick of 512 MB RAM out and got past the memory fail test. I'm attempting to re-install windows now. This is where I have also got hung up in the past. But I'm crossing all digits hoping this one will go. I'll let ya know...

Yep, all tries were complete re-installs on clean drive. I was thinking that might be worth a try. I'll do that and let ya know. Thanks.

More info: When I attempt to format the HD while beginning the WinXP install process, I get this error: ---------- A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. The problem seems to be caused by the following file: setupdd.sys...

Okay, now I'm leaning even further away from SLI. So which non-SLI boards do you suggest? TIA

Very nice job, dude. Shweeeet!

Okay, leaning away from XFX now. I just like the Cooler Master Centurion so much that tossing the PSU is a sacrifice I'm willing to make. I've checked out what seems like gazillions of cases, and the CM is exactly what I'm looking for (minus the 350 W PSU, of course.) I was under the...

Really, I hadn't run across that info yet. Thanks for throwing it out there. What manufacturer do you suggest, then? eVGA?

Running this potential SLI setup it by the experts first.

Yeah, wolfman, I'm still on the fence with the SLI thing, but I'm leaning far towards that versus the single PCI-E. I like the upgrade ability outlook, and figure if I don't buy another 6800GT in the near future, I can eBay the original and get one or two of the newest generations when money...

Anyone? I'm hoping to order tonight. I guess I would have got a reply by now if the system specs were way out of line, but I would really like some feedback. 'preciate it.

Thanks to perusing this useful forum for the last few weeks, I?ve come up with the following for my first build. I?ll be ordering in a matter of a couple days... Just waiting on you to okay everything. (And yeah, I like lights and knobs? flame at will) Some prices are estimated so far...

Really gotta delete my random porn collection

That's exactly what I'm doing right now (albeit on a much smaller scale). Now that I have DSL, newsgroups + Agent = lots of porn in the morn. Like waking up to xmas. Down side is, my poor little 40 GB drive can't hold so much. Next thing I know, I'm getting "Low Hard Drive Space" warnings...

How does this Rig sound for about $1000

I'm sorry. I should have been more specific. I guess I mean what's the best resolutions and settings you can run these and other more graphic - intensive games with these motherboard/videocard setups? Thanks again.

    PCI-E SLI + one 6800GT?

    Thanks, guys. Anyone else? Please?

How does this Rig sound for about $1000

    * bump * I don't mean to hijack your thread, ahurtt. Glad you're posting this. I'm currently contemplating the same, with an identical budget in mind. Either: PCI-E SLI with one 6800 GT and another in a year or less (or one or two completely different GPUs)? Or PCI-E non-SLI with...

    PCI-E SLI + one 6800GT?

I guess I've read so much info I've managed to confuse myself. I'm planning on going PCI-E, but not 100% sure on the SLI functionality issue. My goal is to play Doom/MOH/COD/etc. with nice FPS. Oh, and I am on a budget that doesn't allow two GTs. 1.) Should I go with the SLI and one...
