    Coleman Franken race updates.

While the thought of Senator Al Franken does not appeal to me greatly, I find myself increasingly disgusted with the whole affair. Not only should Coleman probably have relinquished by now, the legal process of election appeals needs to be sped up substantially. The people of Minnesota (of...

Woah...Keanu Reeves is a terrible actor

"That man...is fock-keeng an ann-ee-mal." It was pretty easy to overlook Keanu when you are trying to come to terms with Rob Lowe playing a professional hockey player (and being distracted by Cindy Gibb's righteous boobs).

    YAMPT: The Union--Documentary

Yup, as is being seen in the methaphetamine market. The "mom and pop" domestic meth lab is becoming increasingly archaic in the face of super labs in Mexico. If marijuana production were legalized in BC tomorrow, the long-term reaction would not be a massive increase in grow houses. The...

    Buying house with girlfriend

QFT. I met my girlfriend in an October. We bought a home together the following July. We got married a year and a half after that. That was in 2001. She's in the other room and I still love her desperately. The three pieces of advice I would have are: 1. Only do it with someone...

    YAMPT: The Union--Documentary

Don't think it. Know it. The percentage of violent incidents that police respond to, fights and domestic disputes, that are alcohol-related is staggering. There is virtually no association between marijuana use and violence.

Police official: 3 officers killed in Pa. shooting

While I tend towards the pro-gun side of the equation, the firearm<-->automobile comparison that gets trotted out every single time the gun debate starts is tired and dripping with fallacy. Automobiles are necessary. Our economy, heck, our society depends upon them heavily. With a couple of...

So I went to the gun shop today... I've never even held a gun in my life.

Yup, realized this about 20 minutes later after I was driving away from my house. Ruger is Connecticut. I get all those leetle states confused.

Yeah, it would seem that Jesus has not been following his Father's rules about the body being a temple, etc.

So I went to the gun shop today... I've never even held a gun in my life.

Those are foreign companies, yes, but several make many of their handguns in the US. For example, many Beretta handguns are made in Maryland and many SIG handguns are made in Connecticut.

Should government have control over internet in an emergency ?

Having someone held responsibile later will be fairly small comfort to people who lose power for weeks on end, or suffer a massive reduction in available medical services. Its not just "businesses" and its not just businesses whose networks are not absolutely critical to our social structure...

Should government have control over internet in an emergency ?

What sandorski said. As of today, the possible danger is extremely high. However, the move should be towards getting critical military, civil government and SCADA networks disconnected from the public Internet, not towards granting questionable powers to the Fed. Put not your faith in...

Man Detained & Interrogated By TSA For Carrying Cash

As I believe was covered previously, the $10,000 limit does not apply to domestic travel. It does not even apply to flights leaving the US to the best of my knowledge. It only applies to people entering the United States. However, make sure you are complying with reporting regulations if...

Poem: Stolen from Garrison Kealer's writer's almanac

I liked it. I have always loved this poem from Michael Ondaatje, the Canadian poet best known outside of Canada for his turn at prose (the novel The English Patient): The Cinnamon Peeler If I were a cinnamon peeler I would ride your bed and leave the yellow bark dust on your pillow...

    Why do weathermen SSUUCCKK???

DC weathermen have sucked since I lived here. Remember that huge snowstorm we had year before last? I ended up with 14" and the initial prediction was 2-4". They just kept raising the estimate hour by hour. If they do get the temperatures right, they get the wind wrong, or the...

Do any of you feel being fluent in Spanish will be a valuable skill?

Yes, minor in it. Being fluent in any language other than English looks great on almost any resume, especially for someone who is a native English speaker.

Are you a member of Mensa?

I have taken Mensa practice tests in the past and done well enough to get the "you may have a good chance of passing the real thing"-type messages. A friend of mine who is a member invited me to go to a Mensa social mixer in DC a few years back. After two hours of socializing with these...

However, if you are anything like me, by the time you are getting close to healing you are going to be finding as many different ways to tape it as possible because your skin is going to get thin and irritated by all the taping and removing of tape.

kabota, are you stuffing the wound with wet/dry compresses? If so, the appearance of uncooked steak is what you want. The constant exposure of sterile saline is what keeps infection away but man does it hurt when those compresses dry out and you have to pull that crap out of there. Also, at...

    how dangerous is asbestos

It is dangerous, but only as a particulate in the air. Asbestos used as insulation is compressed into exterior shingles or whatever is only dangerous when you disturb it or, in the case of shingles, would only be dangerous if cutting them without a respirator on.

KDE vs Gnome for my new Mandrake Install?

Sort of my thinking as well. The concerns over Mandrake being a KDE-oriented distro are valid, but you should be able to get a good feel for a preference between the two on Mandrake regardless.

Anybody else start getting pop-ups in firefox?

I recommend installing the prefbar plug-in for FF. It allows you to very easily allow or disallow Javascript (along with many other things including referral links, enable user agent spoofing, etc.) all from small checkboxes on a toolbar. http://prefbar.mozdev.org/

    Who plays Badminton?

Your best bet is to find a club playing at a nearby university. I played when at Auburn and later played at Tulane when I lived in New Orleans. Haven't picked up the racket in awhile though. Badminton is great exercise, one of the more phsically exhausting sports out there.
