Job interviews - when do you drop your level of dress?

Get a job you slacker! Seriously, don't drop the dress until given the opportunity. During the interview you are usually given the opportunity to ask questions about the job....ask about dress code. They will normally throw something about not needing to dress in a suit, etc. Then in the...

Chronic back pain... what are the common causes?

I went to a chiropractor many times, he would temporarily help my lower back pain, but it would always come back (even with exercises/PT to help it). I finally found a good massage therapist (deep tissue, Myofascial Release, etc - not a general Swedish Massage Therapist. The Therapists I'm...

    Serious Post here...

While it will require somewhat of a lifestyle change, diabetes is VERY treatable and those with the disease can live a normal healthy life. I have been diabetic since the 3rd grade (now 26 years old). The first few months may be tough, but once you get in "the groove" it really isn't that...

    Cable to offer 50 Mbs

Yup, part of the upcoming DOCSIS 3.0 standard is Rumored to inclue some type of channelbonding scheme. Allowing use of more than one QAM carrier at a time. I believe that both cisco, broadcom and motorola have submitted plans to CableLabs. Where/how this bonding will occur is still in...

    Cable vs DSL

This is not "cable" related, but rather a QOS related issue. The way TCP/IP works if you max out your upload, no ACK's can get out from your machine to the server you are downloading from. This will be the same for DSL if you saturate your upload.

Dropping Comcast cable for Bellsouth DSL...

Ever spend time looking at a Spectrum Analyzer? Ever closely studied the effects of impulse and/or ingress on the upstream port at the CMTS? Ever worked with the QPSK or QAM modulation used on most cable plants - looking at constellations, MER's, BER's? You would be suprised how often issues...

Dropping Comcast cable for Bellsouth DSL...

I agree with Nik for the most part except for the last part of his statement "The point is that if it's happening to the entire neighborhood and happening frequently, then it's not a problem at your house and can't be fixed from there. " He is most likely correct...but look at this scenario...

I have a strange IP problem.

If you really do have a switch and not a router....... Turn off your other (first) computer, power-cycle the cable modem then turn on the laptop. If you get an IP, the cable co has limited the number of CPE devices that your modem will allow conencted (how many IP's it will hand out)...

    Coax cable: RG6 or RG59?

RG-6 without a doubt. Just becasue there won;t be a modem/digital boxes off these outlets, doesn't matter. The better shielding of the RG-6 will help prevent service issues (from ingress) on all outlets. Also, unlesss you get the correct fittings and tools (not from Lowes, Home Depot, etc)...

    "Cannot renew IP address"

I'll go ahead and confuse the issue even more - for the sake of accuracy. Actually, most cable modems DO have DHCP servers built-in. The server in only active when the modem has not properly signed on to the cable plant. In most cases the modem willl hand out an IP in the 192.168.100.0/24...

Can you obtain the mac addy and serial from a cable modem electronically?

foxkm - I beleive that your instructions would give the MAC Address of the ethernet port on the modem. This is not what the cable co needs - they need the Cable/HFC (hybrid fiber-coaxial) MAC for provisioning purposes. Nicholaus

Can you obtain the mac addy and serial from a cable modem electronically?

Actaully, most cable modems DO have an internal page with diagnostic information (signal levels, MAC, etc.) With the PC hooked to the modem open a browser and go to http://192.168.100.1 (the modem should hand out an IP from 192.168.100.0/24 via DHCP even if not on the cable plant). You are...

    Cable signal boosters....

charlie - I guarantee with splitters you do have signal loss (usually 3.5 dB per two-way split), you just have a good enough signal coming into your home that the loss is not noticable in your video quality.

    RCA DCM235

Yup, the RCA 215, 225 & 235's all have issues. As they get older some part of the power conenction begins to fail and become very sensitive (it seems a slight breeze will cause the modem to reset). The issues were resolved with the 245 (differnt power plug/adaptor). Nicholaus (we have...

    Rant: Stupid cable internet guys....

agree, this would be your best configuration. Keep the amp off of the cable modem - use it only to improve your TV signals. I would call and speak with a supervisor regarding a charge for the amp, personally I think the cable co should pay for it (assuming the wiring in you home is up to spec).

    Rant: Stupid cable internet guys....

I believe an amp is needed/justifioed in your case. Kudos for the great information! Most people don't know/care anything about the splitter config and/or power levels. That greatly helps in remote diagnosis

    Rant: Stupid cable internet guys....

Every home/drop is differnt. The signal to your modem will depend on the length of your drop, quality of cable used (RG-6, RG-11, etc), number of outlets in your home, etc. What you describe with the upstream signal level being weak is kinda misleading. The upstrem is rated by how much power...

    Trying to diagnose cable problem

If I remember correctly most toshiba modems do not have an interal page for diagnosis. Call the cable co's support desk. Trying to diagnose cable problem

I would guess that you are dealing with some type of a RF issue. Generally the first hop in a trace on a Cable modem sytstem is to the CMTS. If you are getting loss on that hop it is a problem between your modem and the cable co's headend. What type of mode do you have? We might be able to...

    Upgrade Cable Modem???

While technically yes.........I deal with modems every day (and night - LOL), some manufacturers do tend to have a much more "solid" product than others. That is, certain modems (motorola being a good example) have a much higher resistance to being knocked offline by minor signal issues. I...

    Cable Internet Service dropping....

Alright, here is the deal....WARNING, this may get long and boring ;) A two-way DOCSIS cable modem (what 90% of cable operators use) operates on two separate Radio Frequencies within the cable lines. Think of these like "channels" on the TV side of cable - there just isn't any video on these...
