    chipset temperature

The NF4 chip often runs warm plus it is hard to say where the temperature sensor is located vs the NF4 chip so the indicated temp may differ between mobo's. I decided my NF4 was running hot based on touching the heatsink. The indicated temp was about 38C. I tried several approaches and...

A8N-SLI Deluxe nVidia on-board NIC card problems

It is possible for ethernet's auto speed sensing to get things wrong, as described here: http://www.cites.uiuc.edu/network/autosense.html One symptom is a lot of lost packets and very slow apparent internet speed (occasionally it works OK when autonegotiate gets it right). Another symptom is...

    SpeedFan giving incorrect temperatures

Speedfan only displays temperatures, it doesn't know what they represent. You can enter whatever you like as the ID for any temperature Speedfan is displaying. See the page referenced earlier, and in particular the Configure/Temperatures Screen. On that screen, click the top temperature...

    SpeedFan giving incorrect temperatures

Speedfan finds all the sensors that could be connected to the 8712F, some of which likely don't exist so the readings are bogus -- the 127C is typical for that. If your board is the rebadged Chaintech VNF4, the Speedfan setup is described here...

    Wierd fan patterns

Have you run SpeedFan? It can monitor and display the fan speeds, allowing you to determine which fan is changing speed. In addition, it can take over control of the fan speeds (if you configure it properly) which may settle things down. SpeedFan will also monitor and display temps on...

    nForce4 Temperature specs?

No hard facts on how much heat the NF4 can handle but I use the NB47J on it along with a regular case type fan mounted inside the case to stir the air. Even a very low fan speed is enough to improve the cooling considerably. SpeedFan controls the CPU and chipset fans independently, where low...

How to tell nforce 4 driver version?

If you use Device Manager, click on "Network Adapters", then double click on "nVidia nForce Networking Controller", and click on "Driver" you should see the driver info for the NIC. With 6.70 loaded I see: Driver Provider: NVIDIA Driver Date: 4/6/2005 Driver Version: 4.8.2.0 etc...

    nForce4 Driver 6.70

I ran into distortion of jpg's and response failures when browsing which I blamed on nVidia's ethernet or NAM driver. The response failures have been with me since I built the system but the distorted jpg's began when I installed 6.66 and continued with 6.70 However, Ethernet autosense can...

    nForce4 Driver 6.70

The issue with NAM varies from system to system. Most systems work fine (that's how nVidia is able to ignore the problem). The most common complaint for NF3/NF4 systems is failure to respond when you click while browsing; clicking a second time works. This also manifests as a "No internet...

See the following for a picture of how to connect a 20 pin PSU to the VNF4: http://www.gadgetbuilder.com/Computer/My%20VNF4.html The power switch pins are merely a contact closure so polarity isn't important. The beep generally indicates a problem with the video card or memory. This...

Why no mobo monitoring software for Gigabyte GA-8I945P-Pro?

How about SpeedFan? It finds the sensors automatically -- although you then have to decide what they're monitoring... I use it to control and monitor temps and fans, the Events pop up an alarm if a fan quits or a temp rises. You may have more exotic needs but SpeedFan works for me.

Adding memory to my Chaintech Ultra MB, puzzled...

I assume you have a VNF4, at least the quote from the manual looks familiar :) The quoted sentence is terse and surprisingly accurate except that "not recommended" should be "may not operate at DDR400". The setup you currently use, 2x512 in 1/2 always works at DDR400 (assuming decent memory)...

Sawmill chipset fan, need answer quick

The Zalman NB47J will generally prevent damage to the NF4 but allows the temperature to rise higher than I prefer. I experimented with several NF4 cooling methods on my VNF4 and found that even a slow fan blowing on the NB47J produces a dramatic improvement in NF4 cooling. Some cases provide...

    Noisy Motherboard

Noise is less likely to be directly from a semiconductor chip, more likely from a passive component or FET which is handling a lot of current. Mostly, the toroids and their coils used in switching regulators on the motherboard; sometimes from coils in the PSU. Occasionally from an...

    Noisy Motherboard

Roger, Your "jet engine" description is much better than my "whine" :) It would be worth poking around with a soda straw (or similar) to see if you can locate the source. If there is any question about the fan being the source, you can put the straw into the fan prior to startup, then...

    Noisy Motherboard

Is the noise from a fan or is it a high pitched whistle/whine? Sometimes, boards make a noise from a component vibrating -- mostly, the toroid cores in the switching regulators used to reduce voltage from 12v to that needed by the CPU and chipset. If you think this might be your problem you...

    How to cool NF4 chipset

On my VNF4 I tried several things before I was happy with the cooling. My guess is that if you have a passive cooler you can improve the cooling considerably by adding an 80mm fan to blow air across the existing cooler. It's cheap and easy to try - I got an old fan from a dead machine -...

    ActiveArmor

    nforce4 chipset driver questions

What do you have in mind? Do you want a quiet system or are you exploring passive cooling for the challenge involved? If you want a quiet system I suspect that most NF4 machines can be cooled while generating minimal noise. I found that the NB47J didn't cool the NF4 sufficiently for my...

Temp monitoring proggy for NF4 motherboards?

BIOS usually shows the load temp because it isn't set up to put the CPU to sleep when it isn't doing anything, so the CPU is normally not "idle" in BIOS. Try SpeedFan, it usually finds and displays all the temperature inputs (whether they have a sensor connected or not). Inputs without a...

Temp monitoring proggy for NF4 motherboards?

I'm unclear on whether the marketing buzzwords are the same for all boards. Cool 'n Quiet on my system is an AMD software function which reduces the core voltage and clock rate when the CPU isn't heavily loaded, dropping the CPU temp about 6C on my Winnie 3000+. SmartGuardian is the...

    Help with motherboard chip

Sorry about that, I hadn't looked at their website previously. AS5 is thermally conductive but NOT electrically conductive so If you're careful to use the recommended amount (on the chip only) it should be fine. Check the NF4 temperature after installing the NB47J to be sure the cooling is...

    Help with motherboard chip

The black plastic is probably to protect the chip. The cooler flops around from handling shocks and can damage the edges and corners of the NF4. I found this kind of damage to the NF4 chip on my Chaintech VNF4, probably because it doesn't have the black plastic shield, see...

which drivers should i use for a nforce3 ultra mobo?

The NF3 drivers from nVidia are fairly old and nVidia doesn't seem to be maintaining them any more. Of course, some would say similar things about NF4 drivers, where they make releases but the releases don't seem to fix the main complaints raised in the nVidia forum :) At any rate, some NF3...

Should I Install the NVIDIA Audio Driver?

It depends what you use your system for. You may get better performance for gaming with the nVidia audio because it uses less CPU. If you listen to music, the Realtek drivers have better fidelity but need a bit more CPU.
