    Recovering NTFS FAT

I was moving my data from two 80 GB HDDs to a new Barracuda 200GB and with about 90% of my data transferred the FAT decides to dissapear. I got a "file or folder corrupt" error and when I rebooted the drive was gone. The drive passes all diagnostics, just somehow the FAT is gone. Is there a...

    NTFS FAT Dissappeared

Ok I was transfering files to a 200 GB Seagate IDE and got a "this folder or file is corrupt" message. Tried to run chkdisk and reboot, then the drive was gone all together. Somehow the NTFS FAT is gone. Thing is I was moving everything to it and then going to back it up to a second matching...

    Use non-Xbox Controller on Xbox?

Does Xbox have USB? I was thinking of getting one and using it as a game station for NES, SNES, and other ROMS. However, like on the PC it is no fun without the gamepads. The keyboard sucks for console emualtors. I know NES controllers can be used via USB on PC and want to know if ia way...

    Alright MacHeads, lets talk

The lack of software options is an outdated argument. There is tons of software for OSX. The only area lacking is games. However, most computer users aren't gamers. I could see the lack of software argument in the past, but it was one of those things that no longer has validity that doesn't...

    Big Apple Sale

I went by the Apple Store site and they have a heck of a deal going on refurbs. They have a 12 in PB for $999. The first to break the sub-$1000 to the best of my knowledge. Plus, some great deals on refurbed G4 ibooks.

    HD isn't showing full capacity.

Either that or your bios doesn't recognize. I bought a Seagate 200GB and it has been sitting unused for over a month because the SuperSocket 7 system I was going to setup with Linux for a file server does not recognize a HD that big. It sucks. I have the most recent BIOS and it isn't recent...

    Portforwarding and Static IP

I am trying to set up port forwarding on my Linksys BEFW11SR for use with Bitorrent and have had poor luck. When I first went to the router setup and try to save after setting portfowarding, it didn't work. I tried three more times to no avail, after it saved and went back to the screen after...

    Apple Computer of the Week

The only place with more ignorance is a clan rally. I don't have a mac, never have, but sure I have enjoyed using a friend's ibook. It is a great machine and if I had the money for a laptop I would be interested. It is like all these young PC types go to a brainwashing seminar and spew out...

    CD-ROM booting with controller card

I have been trying for two weeks to convert my K6-2+ 450 into a file server after getting a 200Gb Seagate Barracuda. The first problem was that the most recent BIOS update is still too old to recognize a drive over 200GB. So, I got a PCI IDE card to bypass the bios, but I can't boot to CD-ROM...

PCI IDE Expansion or New MB/CPU?

I have an old K6-2 450@500 that I wanted to use as a Linux file server, but the 200 GB HDD is too big for the bios. The install craps out on the \home partition because it is bigger than 130GB. Mandrake partition will recognize the full 200GB, but die on install and Disk Druid in Fedora only...

    Seperation of Linux Servers

Ok, so the firewall/router box needs to be seperate from everything else. What about a file server and a mail server? Can they both be on the same box? A friend was throwing away a P100 and I know it is wimpy, but it should be enough for a firewall. I have an old K6-2+ and as soon as I get a...

Hard drive too big for BIOS?

I am setting up a Linux file server after getting a 200GB Barracuda. However, the bios on my socket 7 ASUS P5A MB doesn't recognize drives over 130GB. Will a PCI IDE card work around this?

    Error Installing Mandrake

Works flawlessly on my main PC, an XP 1700+, but that doesn't do me any good. When I move the hard drive back to the old box I get a file system check failed error and a bunch of inode errors. So I guess I am SOL since I can't get it to work.

    Error Installing Mandrake

I'm overclocking a bit from 450 to 500. It goes higher, but the stock heatsink and fan couldn't cut for long up times. My first thought after realizing it was a hardware issue was to take out the old 64 MB generic RAM and just go with the 256 PC133 CL2 Crucial, but unfortunately that wasn't...

    Error Installing Mandrake

well it isn't a hard drive problem. I formatted teh drive, moved it to my main box and isntalled from there. It went off without a hitch. So I nuked it and tried in the K6-2 box and I got the same stinking error. It must be something with the hardware, but I have no way of knowing what. =(

    Error Installing Mandrake

I don't know. I deleted the old .iso and instead of downloading with firefox I downloaded with IE from Linuiso.org. New CD and same problem. The rest of the install works fine. Just when I tries to read teh last partition, the big /home partition I get that error. It asks do I want to...

    Error Installing Mandrake

No that is not the problem. I even re-downloaded to make sure. A google search says it is an operational error, but that doesn't tell me much. Anybody else have any ideas? I want to get this setup asap.

If you don't want to go MacOS, though I don't know why you wouldn't, you can go Yellowdog Linux.

Is there a Free antivirus software for Thunderbird?

Avast will work for just about any e-mail program. You have to tweak an .ini file, but it is easy stuff. They have directions in teh help file.

    Linux Firewall vs. Linksys Router

I already have the Linksys. It was I use for my 2 Win2k desktops. As for "Geeky Cool" who the hell cares about that? Does "Geeky Cool" get you laid or something? Does Natalie Portman come over butt naked? I like to learn new stuff, sorry you don't. Plus, as a teacher it would be nice to be...

    Error Installing Mandrake

When installing it stops and I get an error: fsck failed on /dev/hda9 with exit code 8 or signal 0. I have tried several times and reformatted the drive ith no luck. It is a brand new Seagate Barracuda 200GB nad the distro is Mandrake.

    Linux Firewall vs. Linksys Router

The Linksys router works for now, but I think I'll look into smoothwall or freesco or something along those lines for the future. I'll have to come across another old box for this since my old 486 is completely non-functioning. Smoothwall seems fairly simple to start and if I feel the need I...

    Linux Firewall vs. Linksys Router

I just picked up a 200 GB Seagate and figured I'd throw it in an old PC for a fileserver. I haven't used Linux since I messed around with it for about a month back in '97. However, it appears to be coomon practice to use it for a file server. Plus, Mandrake seems pretty simple to configure...

    Win98 Compatability Mode in Win2K

I remember there used to be a seperate file to d/l for this, but if I am not mistaken it is now included in one of the SPs. ANyhow, I have some older games that I always setup in Win98 compatability mode by right clicking on the icon and going to properties, but those options no longer exist...

I just picked up another HD, but I don't have anymore IDE channels. I have 6.4 GB for Win98 and my current 80 GB, but I just picked up 160 GB. Plus, I have a CD burner and a DVD, but only tow IDEs. What is easier external or PCI card? Which ones at Newegg do you guys reccomend? Also, what...

    Hitachi vs. Seagate

I missed out on the last couple of Seagate deals and I am in desperate need of a new HD. I see Fry's has some Hitachi's on sale, how do they compare to Seagate? I have an 80 GB WDSE right now and MAxtor prior to that. After three Maxtor failures I will never use one again.

Warning! DO NOT buy the recent Power Mac G4!!

Sounds like another PC fanboy talking out of his arse. Applecare is not $500, and like someone mentioned a $4000 G4 is non-existent. Apple will replace the whole unit if a Authorized repair shop can't fix a faulty machine. Appplecare is great. Often times you can get lucky and get a better...

It is amazing that on a forum of computer hardare enthusiasts, we get posters that don't understand the car audio enthuist market.
