    Testing methodology recommendations?

Set a fixed FFT size in Prime, e.g. 1024. When you choose one of the normal options Prime will cycle through different sizes and different sizes cause slightly different heatloads. Also use the logging feature in CoreTemp/Realtemp and calculate an average over a few minutes in Excel, that's much...

i7-3770k tested with IHS removed. Results?

The testing is flawed and the results are unfortunately useless. If you remove the IHS you absolutely need to apply more mounting pressure, but as you can see in the pic showing the CPU mounting mechanism he didn't. The springs that provide the mounting pressure only get compressed by a few...

    Thermalright Silver Arrow

No, because that basic design has been around for quite some time, the IFX-14. They only really changed the fin design, which doesn't really make it a new cooler. It is strange though that the cooler was released under the Cogage brand way before the Thermalright version.

    Socket 775 HSF bracket?

You should be able to find a Prolimatech Megahalems for around £40. It's among the very best performance-wise and has a much better mounting system than the Baram. http://skinflint.co.uk/a508326.html

    Socket 775 HSF bracket?

I fully realize how "bad" the Intel stock heatsinks are, I have lots of them. The Hyper TX3 is way better though (I have one in my "collection" as well, I was quite impressed with it). There probably were brackets back in the day, but as I said, Thermaltake isn't the kind of brand that offers...

    Socket 775 HSF bracket?

Even if you manage to find a bracket for that thing it's not gonna be all that much better than the stock heatsink. If you run is passive as intended it may even be worse... I would get a Cooler Master Hyper TX3, it's dirt cheap and performance and noise are really impressive for a cooler this...

Best bang for buck 1156 cooler

The Baram is pretty decent for that price, and since you're not gonna OC heavily you're not really gonna notice a difference between something like the Baram and the very best like the Megahalems (maybe ~2C at medium overclocks). If you're going for something in the $50 range I would spend a...

Which Custom H2O setup is for me?

You could also do a budget loop, with something like an EK Supreme LT and an EK/DD (Jingway) pump + a cheap res. Depending on where you're ordering, the XSPC res top can be a great way to shave off a few bucks of the basic build. Also don't forget to add fans, and don't forget the G3/8 > G1/4...

    Corsair H50 or tower cooler

If you use a tower cooler and install the backside fan so that it feeds the tower cooler cool air then the tower cooler will outperform the H50. You'll still have the hot air inside the case, but the R2 has exhaust holes in the top, so this won't be much of a problem. The Noctua NH-D14 is...

Cogage mounting mechanism interchangeable with TRUE?

The TRUE will definitely work with the Cogage's mounting bracket. The Cogage only has a push-pin system though, i.e. no backplate and screws.

    Corsair Aircooling A50 & A70

They look similar like the Xigmatek HSFs. If the price is right they could be worth buying, but if they're similar in price to stuff like the Megahalems or TRUE/Venomous X then you should get one of those instead, epspecially if you want to replace the fan anyway. The TRUE/Venomous X have a...

    Fan question

Yeah, I think it's a low RPM fan by default, afaik the 1212L in the model name means that it's a 12V 120mm low speed fan.

Noctua D14 too big for caseNoctua D14 too big for case

While the H50 isn't as good as the Noctua, it's pretty decent and a good choice if high 120mm tower coolers won't fit your case. If you have two other 120mm case fans in that case you can also just remove the fan in the door, case ventilation will definitely be adequate.

Cheap cooler to replace stock HSF for Q9400?

I can also recommend the smaller version, the Hyper TX3. I got my i5 750 to 4GHz with it and it isn't overly noisy at max speed (the 212+ is noisier, but more powerful).

In that price range you should look at the Dell U2410 and the HP LP2475W, both of which have extended color gamut backlighting. The HP ZR24W is cheaper, but lacks a few features like the extended gamut. I was looking at the same thing a few weeks ago and decided that the ZR24W is good enough...

    Q9550 stock, 1.17vcore, idling warm

EVERY program that reports core tempertures does it this way. The CPU only reports how many Kelvin the difference between teh current temp and the TJMax is. There is no way to report core temperarures without assuming a value for TJMax (or knowing what the real TJMax is of course). They never...

    Cooling fan question regarding voltages

Depends on whether that fan will reliably start at 3.3V. Just fromt he specs alone you can't tell whether it will do that. Also, at 0.11A at 5V it will likely spin much slower if it does run at 3.3V, so I'm not sure if will provide enough airflow to cool the router.

Upgrading from P4 to Core 2 Duo

Sure it is related to dual channel: Because of dual channel 533 (effective) MHz RAM matches the bandwidth of the 1066 (effective) MHz quad-pumped FSB. One channel of 533 MHz RAM has half the bandwidth of the FSB, two channels have the same bandwidth.

PCIe1.0 motherboard with PCIe2.0 graphic card performance

The difference will be small in the vast majority of cases. If you take a look at this comparison (older, and in German, but it does the job) you'll see that Crysis didn't benefit at all from PCI-E 2.0 on a 3870, the situation on a 4850 should be the same...

Upgrading from P4 to Core 2 Duo

If you don't overclock, you don need 1066. the RAM that actually matches the bandwidth of the CPU is DDR2 533, in dual channel mode that provides the same bandwidth as the CPUs FSB has (bandwidth per Mhz is eaual, CPU has 1066 effectively, 533 RAM x2 in dual channel mode ia also 1066). So DDR2...

What is the Real FSB Frequency?

I'm really saying that the FSB does not run at 1600, 1333, 1066 or 800 but at 400, 333, 266 and 200 MHz respectively. It does transfer 4 bits of data per cycle though so it's effectively running at the higher speeds. The FSB is not set or picked by GB but set by Intel and determined by the...

What is the Real FSB Frequency?

The FSB frequency is 200 MHz, Intel calls it 800 MHz quad-pumped FSB, because for bits of data are transferred every clockcycle (i.e. Hz) The RAM actually runs at 333Mhz but is marketed as 667MHz, since it transfers two bits per clockcycle, effectively reaching the speed of (non-existing) RAM...

    Rebuilding my computer

That is a great motherboard, but you won't notice any benefit at all. The performance difference between any semi-current boards is like less than 5%, which is not enough for you to notice. The board supports 1600/1333 FSB, but it will still run your CPU at it's rated FSB of 800. It's the CPU...

how hot can my asus NB run while on the safe side?

NBs can usually get very hot, like GPUs they run stable at higher temperatures than CPUs could. My rule of thumb is that "too hot" is reached when the system is unstable in the most demanding stress tests. Monitoring programs regularly give wrong temperature readings, I would only worry about...

How do I know if this mobo will support RAID 1?

SATA ports on motherboards are provided by the southbridge, and sometimes there is an extra chip to provide more ports. Whether RAID is supported depends on the southbridge and/or that controller. As far as I'm aware all retail 790GX chipset boards have the SB750 southbridge which supports...

    Upgradeitis....E8400 or a Q8200?

As far as I'm aware none of the games you listed really benefit from quad cores, nor will MS Flight Simulator. The larger cache and the higherclockspeed/better overclockability of the E8400 will more than make up for it "only" having 2 cores.

My 1.0 is from China. Gigabyte has stated though that they only changed the heatsinks to improve hsf compatability (and vuts costs a little from the look of them). They have already done this with the P35 DS4/DQ6 and their 1.0/1.1 revisions, the only change was the heatsink...

    Lian-Li PC-A17 question

Largely depends on the hard drive itself, but unless you use a very quiet 5400 RPM model, you'll likely still notice virbations. But then there is no case that I'm aware of that offers truly good vibration-killing mounting. If you want to do it properly, remove the HD bay and mount your drives...
