Ive been with Nvidia for the last few generations of cards, and I can easily say with confidence that ATI is doing the right thing. There is no place for $600 + cards when a card at $400-$450 (9800GX2) can perform the same or better.
The GTX280 is a big ugly chip, they need to shrink it and...
Well the 9600 GSO on newegg (EVGA brand) has a higher core clock, better cooler and faster memory than regular 8800GS cards. It is most likely faster or just as fast as a stock 9600GT, at least at 1280x1024 ish resolutions.
You sound like a financially rich person......the fastest consumer videocard you can buy today is the 8800 ultra, so if you don't like the performance of the 8800GT, which is better than the GTS, leaves the 2900XT in the dust and just about kissing the GTX's behind............then go SLI or quad...
Whichever has the best price/performance which includes overclocking ability as well. I dont think RV670 will be under $199 like the 8800GT 256MB is supposed to debut at, so right now im leaning towards nvida.
Just wait for the 8800GT to release at end of this month. Rumors have it starting at $179-$199 for 256mb version. And you can sell the 7900GS on ebay for at least $60+ to help pay for it. You will get double the performance of your card now and DX10. Hope that helps.
Everyone needs at least a 8800GTS 640? For what? Many games that people play day in and out are perfectly playable with 7800/7900 series cards that were released 2 years ago at moderate resolutions.
Not everyone is playing on huge 30 inch monitors at 1920x1200. I'm still on a 17 inch monitor...
I think that is going to be the case. 112sp vs 96sp and 65nm vs 90nm manufacturing process will most likely give 8800GT and it's standard 600 core clock A LOT of head room. At least that is my hope!!!
You and me both my friend. I have no problem selling off my 7900GS to help pay for this bad boy if those prices are correct. I would easily get at least 2x the performance and DX10 isn't too bad either :D
I think in the most important area to me (gaming, duh) 16% and 21% faster in oblivion and HL2 is a pretty big jump.
The chips will be competitive with Intel chips, which will cause more price wars and quad cores to become more inexpensive shortly.
Everyone wins.
Just to state my setup, I have to run 1.45 cpu volts to get to 2.8Ghz, and my RAM has to be raised to 2.1 from 1.95 to run orthos stable.
If the only thing you changed was the bios, I would go back to the older bios.
EDIT: Nevermind, I see you tried that already
Well, the Pentium E series core 2 chips are severely starving for cache, it only has 25% of the cache of the conroe 4mb chips, and it shows during gaming BIG time.
So, if you want to be the cheapest bastard you can be (like me), I recommend the X2 3600 and Biostar Tforce 550 motherboard...
I won't be upgrading for a long time it seems. DX10 is not worthy right now, nor is vista. The cards are also nothing hot. The 2600 and 8600 cards stink as well. There are also no games coming out in the future that will tear me away from BF2 and counter strike source, which I run perfectly.
Didn't their revenue actually increase, possibly an increase in market share?
I want AMD to survive because I have an AM2 system already waiting for Quad core chips. They are supposed to break even by 4th quarter.

Silent heat pipe card, 80nm, low heat output, completely silent, DX10 and decent speed for todays games (very doubtful for full DX10 acceleration though)
$115, $105 after rebate
Nah, I don't think it will be that big of a difference.
I say overclock the hell out of your card if you haven't yet.
If you still want to, sell your 7600GT and go for 8600GTS. Around 7900GS performance + DX10 for you as a bonus.
If you REALLY want to be sure to handle everything like...
Well Nvidia supposedly has a new 9 series midrange coming in spring 08, so yea, the high end probably will release by christmas.
The midrange always seems to be about ~12 months apart from generation to generation.
Update:
It seems it wasn't the dual channel after all. I thought it was and everything ran fine for a bit. Then it started happening again.
Well it turns out my CPU was "overheating" and the safety shutdown setting from bios kicked into effect.
My CPU currently runs hot overclocked to...
I just upgraded to 2GB RAM. Everything was going good for a couple hours until I started getting crashes.
Hmmm, maybe my new stick of RAM was bad.
Tested that, and it was fine in memtest. Could it have been my overclock? What about the DIMM slot?
After 2 hours of troubleshooting, I...

Core 2 Duo are dual core processors, Core 2 Quad are quad core processors....why is this so hard to grasp?
The article clearly distinguishes both Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad. I will eat my own poo if Intel drops the Quad core 6600 AGAIN not even 2 months after this upcoming one.
They have no reason to, with AMD not having any Quad cores out, and if they go any lower, it will cut into Core 2 Duo...
It is the same architecture, but the quad cores are not core 2 duo. That is why they have Q in front of the Q6600.
http://www.intel.com/products/...or/core2quad/index.htm
The Q6600 is dropping 50% july 22nd
PLEASE stay away from them, they are going to be slower than the 8600 series. And for 1680x1050.....will be a joke. The 8600 series is a joke, and the HD 2600 series will be even more of a joke.
You can get an X1950XT on newegg for $179 + rebates if you bother with those.
I believe it is 4 ROPs and 4x2 texture units.
Basically it is bottlenecked again as usual with ATI cards, not to mention it really only has 24 shader units compared to 8600 32
This has to be a joke...... right?!
Wow, ATI, what did you do?
Why do they keep severely bottlenecking their video cards for? What is the matter with them?
The article clearly gives it to you with no BS. I don't see the problem with that.
This writer clearly knows that you should not judge non final silicon with non final motherboards with non final bioses unlike other sites.
I think the best part of that article is the mention that...
I would use orthos, its prime95 but multi threaded. And I dont think your screen should go wacko.
My stock cooled 2.8GHz 3600 idles around 37c, load 65-70c with orthos depending on cool or hot temperature in room. Ran orthos for over 12 hours with no errors or shutdowns.
