Looking for a simple linux installation with good WiFi support

Ubuntu is popular, but not as good as Mepis for the things most Linux newbies look for.

    Seagate vs Samsung

I can't imagine a quieter drive than either of the Samsungs I have, a 80GB SATA and 200GB IDE.

    Ubuntu 5.10 is out!

I really want to like Ubuntu: sleek, different, great Gnome implementation. I tried the 5.10 LiveCD, didn't detect my wireless, couldn't configure it aftwerwards, same old problems.

Why do web sites still look bad in Linux?

Ugly! That's what I was thinking of when I said that Linux looked really bad several years ago. But I have also tried many of the most recent distros (Ubuntu and Kubuntu 5.04, SimplyMepis 3.3.1.1, PCLinux 9.1, Ark 2005.2, Yoper 2.2, Kanotix 2005.3, etc., some with XF86, some with Xorg, all with...

Why do web sites still look bad in Linux?

I'll see if I can get screenshots (I have to switch hard drives on my laptop). I thought it was a Mozilla problem until I tried Firefox in Windows. I use Clear Type.

Why do web sites still look bad in Linux?

In Windows, Firefox has been a surprising discovery for me and I now use it all the time. What surprises me even more is that while in Windows web sites via Firefox look just as nice as they do through Internet Explorer, they don't look as good in Linux, whether it's Firefox or Konqueror (in...

Linux for complete and utter first time users

I have been using Linux on and off for five years and I would not suggest SuSe, Fedora or Ubuntu. With all of them you'll need to configure something and it will be difficult for a newbie. I would also recommend that you stay with Windows. If you have to try Linux, go with SimplyMepis.

Viewsonic VP191s/b or Samsung 193B or Dell UltraSharp 1905FP

I swear by my Dell but I don't game, so I don't know how it would perform. It really is a bargain, especially if you wait for a sale.

Total Linux n00b thinking of starting!

The new Live CD distributions are great to try and then decide if you want to install them to your hard drive; I suggest Mepis and PCLinuxOS; both are geared to the newbie and their KDE implementation is similar to Windows. Using Thunderbird for your email, you can import your address book and...

I am also using Mepis 3.3.2 test2 and it works perfectly in my old laptop.

    PCLINUX OS?

PCLinuxOS was one of about ten distros I tried before deciding on Mepis. It is OK, but I liked Kanotix better and generally I feel more confortable with Debian because of apt and synaptic. Ubuntu is beautiful and different because of Gnome, but it is still too much like the old Linux for me...

Wow I'm in LOVE with MEPIS!!

Same here. After many years of trying Linux, Mepis is the first distribution I'm really confortable with. It installed on my old laptop without any input from me and everything works as it should. There are a lot of little details in Mepis, like KDE's "us_intl" keyboard settings that are really...

I must say, Ubuntu (kubuntu version) is nice!

After trying Linux for years, this is the first time I like it as implemented in Ubuntu and Kubuntu. I hope they improve the installer and include a "us_intl with deadkeys" keyboard layout.

    Newb's New Ubuntu Box Questions

Sorry for the blank post. Ubuntu is great but so is Kubuntu. I tried both and I think I will stay with Kubuntu for particular reasons that may not apply to you (KDE has a global setting for accents on foreign words), but Ubuntu's implementation of Gnome is the first I really like.

    MSI RS480

In terms of space it fits easily; maybe you're thinking about the backplate? To replace with the Zalman all you have to do is heat the factory backplate with a hairdryer for a minute or two and then push from above, it will peel off easily. I understand the Zalman 7700 just barely fits on this...

    Shuttle vs Aspire X-QPack

The Silverstone is not bad, but I don't think it compares favorably with the Chenming MATX-118's 120mm fan and temperature-controlled PSU fan in terms of cooling and low noise. Unless you don't care about noise, hose small fans would probably be nasty.

Someone prescribe me a Linux Distro!

I also have a very old 366Hz laptop (Dell Inspiron 7k) that I still use. Years ago I tried several Mandrake and Red Hat versions and both had the typical shortcomings of incomplete hardware detection which meant having to walk the dreaded console route. More recently I installed Libranet, a...

    ACPI vs Standard PC HAL's

My new MSI RS480 didn't completely shut down and I traced the problem down to a Standard PC HAL. A XP SP2 update fixed that by updating to the correct "ACPI Single Processor HAL" or something like that.

    MSI RS480M2-IL + cpu temps

My temps are typically 29C idle, 37C under load. The Chenming MATX-118 is a great SFF case design for cooling. I overclock with ClockGen and have even disabled C'n'Q. Temperature readings are consistent within one degree as checked by the Bios PCHealth, the MSI utility and the case sensor.

    Socket 754 mATX CCFF Build

I like them, in fact I was going to get that same 754 board but I finally decided on the MSI because of a few advantages (939, dual channel memory) and also because of future upgradability. You can overclock/undervolt the s760GXm-S and Aopen's SilentTek utility is very helpful for controlling...

Need a Micro ATX case recommendation

Check the Sudhian forum, where there is some consensus over the brand new Chenming/Aspire being the best microATX case at the moment. Removable tray, 120mm case fan, silent PSU and good airflow that is miles ahead of the Aria.

    120MM Fan

I purchased two Yate Loon D12SMs at PCTekonline, nice guys to do business with. The fan is two-wire and comes with both male and female 4-pin connectors, so I suppose you'd need a 4-pin to 3-pin adapter to use a Zalman FanMate.

Suggestion, say twin instead of dual

Either one sounds good to me, but when bad grammar is so common throughout the Internet (it's as posessive, to much, differance, definately), why worry? Twin dual = four?

    Competition for the Antec Aria.

It is a non-standard ATX PSU, 116mm in depth instead of 140mm. Aspire says you may be able to install a regular ATX PSU with a short DVD (LiteOn) but it would still be cramped. This is my favorite small case by far, especially the one-windowed Chenming.

    HTPC w/ XP:MC...real min specs?

Hi, new member. As has been said, it depends on what you want to do. The official baseline is supposed to be an Intel 3.0 or similar, but I believe this is geared to HDTV; if you want SDTV I think you can get by with less performance. Regarding cards, I would recommend the Hauppauge...
