    Motherboard not supporting XP!!!! :S

Well, I think the problems in vista are related to the xp install problems so, it might not be the media, but it doesn't hurt to check or try at this point I wouldn't skip anything. Then the next question why would the DVD drives disappear ? That's it for me

    Motherboard not supporting XP!!!! :S

First, I'd guess I'd check the jumpers and the IDE cable Then maybe reset the motherboard then connect one DVD drive up at a time making sure to change the jumpers. Then look at the PSU. Then I'd guess I'd start disconnecting and disabling until I got a different result. What's the...

Is XP SP3 safe to install?

If you have an older AIW radeon card with older drivers you might want to make an image back up first or now even if you don't install sp3. sp3 and old ATI drivers don't jive, they check for SP2 and if the can't find it load SP1 drivers or NSP driver. Also MS has made ATI drivers a critical...

two hard drives xp and vista

I'm not sure if I got this right You boot the system and now XP boots ? And you can't get into Vista ? Because other wise you should see the XP drive in Vista without doing a thing. If this is the case then you should just be able to switch the boot order in the bios. BTW even if you...

What are these files doing on my C Drive?

You don't need to change permissions in Vista to view it. Just run a third party file manager as Admin I don't think someone that wants to disable system restore and is creating full back ups is going to cause any problems no matter what they do to the system volume information folder...

What are these files doing on my C Drive?

It looks like some of those files are current My thinking is that even though system restore is disabled it still is making shadow copies.

What are these files doing on my C Drive?

actually if you don't have access it shows at 0 bytes anyway. It could be full of stuff yeah, it looks like you got some shadow copies there, there must be an overlooked service still running. I haven't really looked into shutting it off. System Restore in Vista looks like it might...

    another vista question

I have c:\users\user name\local settings but when I browse with an operating system that doesn't use or recognize the contents of symbolic link folders it's empty. I suppose the paths can be different system to system depending on how the vista image was created. I guess you'll only know what's...

    another vista question

I used mklink on a system restore Volume Shadow Copy to a C:\ drive folder and produced a similar effect. Where the Shadow Copy had a linked folder to the Shadow Copy and so on and so on. Not that it used up more space it was just a linked folder. So maybe you could delete the folder if it was a...

    another vista question

Well, I have the same in both users and documents and settings when looking with ExplorerXP while running it as admin. And yes it appears to be a loop of a symlink, so if you delete one I believe you'd delete it all. Not a good idea.

    Which OS to install?

well, I've seen systems with xp with only 1GHZ CPUs and using old pc133 ram run Hulu where it's watchable. Maybe your anti-virus software is slowing things down, what % is it running at idle ? I'd think windows 2000 would work fine up until you weren't able to install a updated internet...

Windows XP welcome screen no longer has any user showing......

A wild guess would be either the file system is messed up or the registry or both run chkdsk and restore the registry to before this happened if the file system is ok and the registry is restored to before this happened all should be as it was. Unless it's malware causing it.

Unable to delete printer in XP

First thing I'd look to do which you might have tried but didn't say would be remove all the print jobs in that printer. Usually what happens is one print job gets messed up and the user doesn't think about removing it then they get stacked up, and the printer won't work and won't delete.

change in desktop shortcut icons from day to day

Internet shortcuts ? If that's what you're talking about then they're linked to favicon.ico on the website server and they can come and go depending on sites you vist. One day they're yahoo icons the next they're google. Try opening one with wordpad and see if it says something, not that...

/3gb Boot.ini switch in XP 32bit breaking video drivers

It sounds like the game has pretty bad support The /3gb switch is doing exactly what it's suppose to be doing, I don't think that is even close to a tweak that's needed for playing a game. And the whole memory leak stuff I hated since windows 95, it's just a way to explain something without...

    Multi-OS Booting Problem

after the XP install you should have ran bootsect.exe /nt60 c: then you would have been ok but I'm not sure what's going on right now but yes I'm 99% sure you can fix it and should fix it because it can happen again and unless you want to reinstall everything over everytime you run into...

Windows OEM tied permanently to motherboard?

why not just sell the old computer, building a new computer is much more fun than upgrading anyway. I wonder if they get requests from users to use old OEM xp installations to be used as virtual install on a new machine to smoothe the transition to vista. I've heard speakers suggest this but...

What can I do about HD clicking...?

I suppose it could be driver related, you might want to try updated chipset drivers. But I'd also do a drive test with a manufacturers disk Also I suppose you power supply could be causing it as well.

    two different setups?

maybe think of virtualizing or isolating your internet and security or maybe get a better AV software, something that's not a total resource hog and one that works better than Norton, maybe something with "game mode" if that's what we're talking.

    Can't add memory to desktop

dell and or Intel motherboards can be real picky about the memory chips on the modules, just because it post and boots with the Corsair module doesn't mean it doesn't have a problem with it. The problem, I believe, more accurately is the chip density of the Corsair module. I'd suggest...
