I need to get a new computer for photo processing - so what software & PC vs. Mac?

What are you attesting to? The paper you shoot for does not have a single dual core intel Mac G5. And how did you get Windows 7 to run on a PowerPC chip? You are either really confused or had a typo in your second sentence.

Is focus the only criteria for you shooting at night? What about noise?

    Think Tank

Got the Speed Demon a couple weeks ago and whatever model Lowe Pro makes a competitor. Took the Lowe Pro out of the box and put it back after comparing it with the Speed Demon. The TT SD is a great pack! The LP Sling I have is a great bag too though.

Photography & Dating.... who do you consider a photographer...

Are you serious? A 40D, a few point and shoots and a $30 film camera impresses them? What kind of low rent people are you dating? I wouldn't call you a gear snob..... you have nothing to be snobby about.

nikon lens: 18-105mm VR or 18-200mm VR to pair with a d90 and a complete noob

Agreed, for you there is no point in fretting about what additional optical quality you will get from using more than one lens. Why jack with carrying more that one lens when the 18-200 will be a better lens than you are a photographer? Unless you want to go out to 450 mm. You are already out...

FINALLY starting to build a real photo website for myself...

This statement doesn't exude much confidence. It screams "I am a rookie". Beyond that "street smarts" has little or no translation to anything of value in the client's eyes. If you are sending clients to this site.. you really need to change your whole "passion" statement. Treat it...

    Digital photography laptop recommendation

Right... my reply was umm.... let's say sarcasm. Never go in there... wouldn't know. My last Mac came from Amazon. Rest my case on saving the argument for the bit heads. I just knew some bit head would come in here and start talking Enterprise IT when the discussion is really on a very...

    Digital photography laptop recommendation

My fault.. didn't realize you were "very computer literate." Maybe the statement around "getting a laptop geared towards photography" threw me off. Or maybe it was the title of the thread, digital photography laptop recommendations. You are obviously wiser on the subject than I... I didn't know...

    Digital photography laptop recommendation

Lot of mumbo jumbo in this thread... First... A hard drive upgrade is very likely the wrong answer. My LR scratch drive is a WD Passport. I also keep my catalog files on it. Second...The laptop vs. desktop argument, save that crap for the bit heads. LR runs beautifully on laptops. I am...

Nikon D5000, Canon Rebel T1i or used Canon XSi

Flash zipping into eyes isn't a low light problem. It's a matter of learning how to use a flash once you get an SLR.

Nikon D5000, Canon Rebel T1i or used Canon XSi

Agreed. Those shots could have been captured with the majority of DSLRS... nothing special. And almost any DSLR has the specs to keep up with a newb for years. Can you grow into a 40D... sure. But seriously, a newb can grow into an XT for much less.

how did this old camera stack up to competition: Casio Exilim EX-Z70

I disagree. Unless you don't consider a Canon G10 or Panasonic LX3 point and shoots like the rest of the world does. Wait.... maybe you consider the G10 and LX3 in that 5%?

    Promaster (Tamron) 17-50mm f/2.8 $189.95+shipping

I have never seen a Tamron I liked. Never. Then again, I try to stay away from them. I most always go Nikon, but have the Sigma 50-500mm as well. The only other 3rd party brand I'd go with for a Nikon mount would be Tokina.

Is the Nikon D90 overkill for a beginner? Update: I bought one

I shoot 4GB cards (multiples) for one reason. The remote chance that the card gets corrupted. Losing 200 pics is bad, losing 4-800 pics is really bad. Have I ever had a card corrupt on me? No. Do I know people who had cards corrupt on them? Yes.

Yep agreed. Your primary goal of having fun was achieved by going lighter... that's what truly matters. And as you say, the shots were meant for a DVD slide show, so for that they are fine.

That's a great article. If only it were relevant to the OP! He was wanting to buy a 645 for $100 to try out MF for landscapes. I stand behind my original statement that is ridiculous to reccomend a high end full frame camera as a better option. Should I spend $100 on a 645 to try it out...

I guess I'll be the dissenting opinion here. Some of them look.... ok. That shot of the jackal though... not so much. Maybe it's my laptop screen. I'll have another look through my dedicated/calibrated LCD at home.

Here is a link for those who don't know about MF cameras and film. The website is run by a well known and respected photographer and is generally spot on. As Madwand1 points out, MF has lost a bit of appeal with some folks. But it still has a large following... particularly with those who went...
