Just FYI... Cat 8.5's are out

The new drivers also have overscan enabled by default if an HDTV is detected. It took me a while to figure out why my 1360x768 resolution was only taking up 85% of my screen.

SLI on non nvidia chipset drivers, can u help these guyz undertaking this project ?

It's definately unlicensed, but should be possible. Unless there's encyption involved I don't think it'd be illegal. I'm suprised that this hasn't been done already, ULi released a patch to enable SLI on their boards more than 2 years ago now. Link.

What is the least expensive half-height PCI-E card that can control 4 monitors?

Depending on your exact system, you could get a half-height x1300 from Dell and then a pair of dual head2go's or a single triple head2go. I'm not sure if the x1300 could drive the triplehead2go as it'd need to output 3840x1024 to drive 3x 17 or 19 inch lcds, but it should handle 2560x1024 on...

Which card is this? (AGP-era card)

http://www.digit-life.com/archive.shtml?2003/0219 also shows it, though the caps are a bit different on the bottom right. It was a limited edition, in a wooden box and with abit's expensive otes cooler, so it could have been the most expensive card ever. Wasn't the 7800gtx msrp at $600, it...

2008 FORMULA 1 ING AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX

Personally, I can't stand the speed commentators. They did a decent job of the US grand prix last year when I think they were at the track, but not being there really hurts them. I watched the itv coverage of the race yesterday, and the commentators being able to hear the cars as they go down...

Taking a Trip to Hong Kong

It's been a couple of years since I was in HK, so I don't know about current prices but my guess is you could get a better price than newegg as long as you're very good at haggling. Knowing cantonese would give you a lot better chance of getting a good price as well, but you can get by with...

How do I setup my own ftp server?

You don't really need to worry about a client, internet explorer will work if nothing else. It'd probably be easier for you to just put them up on flickr or any other photo sharing website. If you do host your own, you'll need to tell everyone your ip address (or use dyndns or something to...

Dell IR Remote for Media Center - $14.99 +sh

Hot deal - this remote will work out of the box with XP Pro and the buttons work like a multimedia keyboard so should work in itunes/WMP etc. You can also use girder or HiP to get it to control practically any program out there, including using the IR blaster. The pic looks like this is the...

    WD 250 GB, SATAII: $80, PATA: $70

I still see the sata drive for $80. Not bad, but I got an oem one w/ 3 yr warranty for $90 shipped from the egg last week. PATA is $140 and only 8MB buffer.

    Cheap Windows XP Upgrade

It might work, but then technically you're breaking the terms of the license and so are really no better than a common pirate ;) Of course, WGA won't know that, so won't nag you about it. Given the choice of an upgrade version or OEM, I'd take upgrade and not have to deal with crap when...

    WD 250g SATA II 16Mb $90 Shipped. (WD2500KS)

    WD 250g SATA II 16Mb $90 Shipped. (WD2500KS)

I see $90 + $4.99 shipping. The extra $5 for the 3yr warranty makes it slightly hotter than the outpost deal imo.

    Cheap Windows XP Upgrade

That's what I did also. It's not like an old win98 disk is hard to come by. As long as you have an existing XP install on the partition before you start setup, the installation process won't prompt you to insert another disc, it'll verify your upgrade status from the existing partition, which...

    Super-Flower PSUs at Directron

    Seagate 300 GB SATA/150 16MB Buffer 5 yr warranty

I think it's officially a 7200.8, but using the lower density platters that the 7200.7's used, rather than the higher density ones that some of the 7200.8's had when they launched. Seagate product lines have so much overlap though... Either way, I think it's a hot deal... thinking about...

Recommend me a great overclocking 939 mobo without the extras of the DFI

If you don't want the extras of the Ultra-D, look at the DFI Infinity SLI. It's pretty much the same performance (300+ HTT) but without the wacky colour scheme and additional cables. I had my Opty 165 up to 2.6 ghz easily with my infinity.

    7800gt + NV5...how much better?

To find out which is the noisy fan, just reach inside and stop the fan moving for a second or so - I'd suggest putting your finger on the fan hub to stop it, not sticking your finger in the blades ;) I suspect your video card fan will be louder than CPU. You should also test your chipset fan as...

    74Gb $100 raptor @ TigerDirect. (AR)

There's normally a upc on the plain cardboard box. At least that's how it worked for the oem vid card I ordered. I've had mostly success with TD rebates, got burned once but was only $10 and I didn't keep copies :( I think they had a lot of problems a few years ago and still have a lot of...

Best way to spend $500 on an upgrade

You could try the ASRock dual mobo, keep your 6600GT and grab a better chip (maybe an x2) and probably have some cash for more memory or a new hard drive. Once you have some more cash (or sell your existing stuff) you can then get a 7800gt.

Hot Enough? CompUSA Mid-Tower ATX Case - $30

PC Club have a couple of cases for $30, and one with a PSU for $35. If you tell them you're a system builder, you'll normally get a discount as well. Link I got a micro-atx case from them a couple years ago w/ 250watt PSU for $25. It's been just fine for my htpc A64 3000+

Update 1/25/06. Price back up to $299 Oem Opteron 165 Dual core 939 CPU

I'm not so sure about that. tankguys and dave at flickerdown seem to be getting more stock in every so often, but maybe their more system builders than retail. monarch should still get some as they are system builders, though amd might not like them selling them indivdually. Glad I jumped on...

Update 1/25/06. Price back up to $299 Oem Opteron 165 Dual core 939 CPU

I got mine last Thursday OEM 165 with stepping ccbwe 0546. All the retail boxes, same day build and fedex actually delivered it in 2 days :0 Got mine up to 2.4 ghz so far with the cheap venus 7+ cooler. Will try more once I get an XP90 or Zalman 7700.

    most reliable website..

These are almost the holy trinity. chiefvalue is newegg's sister site, but occasionally have better pricing. www.froogle.com is a good place to compare prices, then resellerratings.com to see how good the store is. I also like PCClub as a local B&M store - tell them you're a reseller and...

nothing copies to external hard drive

Yup, fat32 sucks for big files, but ntfs isn't so good with macs/linux. Either convert it over, or use winrar to cut it into 1gb pieces. Another option would be to extract the dvdr to a video_ts folder, which will have 1gb files in it.

    Quick question about HDD enclosure....

Typically, larger enclosures give more space for air to circulate, and so better cooling. But the 3.5" one you mentioned has an 80mm fan, which would likely do a better job than the whiney 40mm fan in the 5.25" one.

    computer wont standby!

Actually, desktop components are designed for standby, but there's usually a few problems with it. Try looking in the bios for the standby options - there's usually 2 options s1 and s2 (pos and STR) - try the other setting to what it now is. Another option would be to use hibernation. You...

Please help with this DVD+R and DVD-R business...

Pressed CDs and DVD store their data in the middle, so should be put label-side down on a table to avoid scratches which would mess up the laser. CDRs store their data on a top surface of the disc, so should be put label side up to avoid this getting damaged thus making the disk unreadable...

Getting a "Document Has Been Sent to Printer.." Message

Hmm, no Admin rights means you won't be able to turn off the messenger service, which is usually the quickest way to stop these. There should also be a setting in the printer driver to stop it as well.

MCE 2005 minimum video card requirements

MCE is a directX 9-driven front end. Everything on-screen is directX generated with fancy pixel effects etc (I don't know the full details). Also, the video uses DXVA, not overlay, which is a DX9 feature. Your 4200 might work, just like it can play DX9 games, but you might have problems...
