    Is my router broken?

To run setup without the CD, go to www.linksys.com/connect, click on NetSet Assistant, and run it while online (without the router in the loop). Follow the simple instructions and the site will determine what is needed to configure your router, tell you to plug the router in, and take care of...

Somone recommend me a huge case

The CM Stacker should handle pretty much anything most people could need. It is a great case and I really like mine. It is fairly big and has a lot of room inside, plus a lot of cooling and the ability to use two power supplies. Also, it can be converted to BTX. Tough to beat.

    USB Print Server $

$40 is cheap, but I don't know anything about Buffalo or the vendor you link to. Most small print servers I have seen from the major vendors (Linksys, Dlink) are $70-80. I am surprised how expensive they are. With 2 computers, it almost seems to make more sense just to get another printer...

Should I just wait another year or upgrade now?

I would wait. Your machine should play HL2 ok. Doom might be ok, or you might need to scale down a bit.

    PC 133 Ram for Mom

It is an Intel cpu. It seems people don't seem too offfended by the thought of Rosewill from Newegg. Perhaps it makes sense to drop that $37 stick of 256M in and see how much the computer is used over the next few months and then see whether a redo of the mobo and cpu is warranted. If so...

    PC 133 Ram for Mom

Actually, it is for 256M but it is still high given the cost of all of the tooling on this stuff should have been amortized long ago. I can get good ddr 400 value ram for less.

    PC 133 Ram for Mom

I hear what you say about ME, and I have thought about just doing a mobo/cpu/ram with xp. Perhaps something like an XP 1800+ and mobo and 512 K ram for about $200 plus XP home OEM for $90? $290 isn't bad for a reasonably up to date system. Her 4 year old video card might be a bit strained...

    PC 133 Ram for Mom

I just found out my mother's Dell 900mhz has only 128M ram. She runs Windows ME and the computer is about 4 years old. It is all she needs for her infrequent use surfing the internet, email, and some light word processing. . It seems to me that she would get a good speed bump if I add...

Home Network Help Please through Router

Thanks for the repsonse. I just build computer B a week or two ago and haven't used it much. Today, it decided to update Windows XP Pro to SR2 and after that occurred I would see the shared drive on targe computer A. Go figure.

    Case suggestion

Nice setup, you are doing pretty much the same build as I did 2 weeks ago. I went with the X800XL. I used the Coolermaster Stacker and am very happy with it. LOTS of room, great cooling, and reasonably quiet. It is pretty large. The Fortron takes a bit of jiggling to get the holes to...

Would leaving laptop charger on kill battery?

Most company laptops (mine included) seem to spend most of their lives plugged in to AC while running and locked away in a drawer at night. It seems they are only infrequently run on the battery. Given this is typical usage, it is hard to see that leaving the battery in while on AC, even if...

Home Network Help Please through Router

I have 2 computers running xp pro. I want to access files on target computer A from computer B. They are both on a router (D-Link DI 604). Both can access the Internet. I can ping target A from B. Here is what I did: 1.. Named each computer, put on a workgroup with the same name...

    Partition recommendations?

Lots of interesting advice here. I set my last computer up generally along the lines recommended here (about three years ago). I made the mistake of only allocating 3G or so for the OS and had to get a partitioning program to bail myself out. Despite all the planning, I never found the...

    Moving to New Computer

Ok, thanks. I didn't realize I could share only particular folders. I am behind a firewall (in the router and software) but I feel better only opening up particular folders rather than the whole computer. I think I need a spare monitor and keyboard to make this a bit easier.

    Moving to New Computer

So I just enable file sharing on both, turn them both on, and go into My Computer on the new machine? I expect it will be obvious, but what will I be looking for? Will it show another machine that I can tap the drives on or will the old machine show up as a bunch of drives on the new one?

    Moving to New Computer

My new rig is up and running and I need to transfer from my old computer (1) data; (2) games; and (3) bookmarks. What is the best way to do it? I only want to move some things so I can't just clone the old hard drive. My data is all in a data folder. I was thinking of just emailing to...

    Help with Fortron Blue Storm

I know I am missing something here. Can't anyone tell me how a psu with a fan on top works in a system without a vent on the top in the rear of the case?

Is the WD Raptor really worth it?

It depends is the right answer. Do you notice loading and other disk access lags that you care about? It is worth the price if you want the extra speed, particularly if you do things with a lot of loading from the hard disk such as with games. Many may not feel the amount of increased speed...

    Help with Fortron Blue Storm

How does the Fortron Blue Storm psu work with the CoolerMaster Stacker case? The psu appears to have its fan on the top and the case has no outlet at the top but rather it seems to be designed for a psu with a fan at the rear. What am I missing here? How to psus with top-mounted fans work...

Request for Tips on New Build

Thanks for the tips. I should have been clearer about the two drives. One is the Raptor, and the other is a 120G Seagate 7200.8 ncq. I am asking because last build I set up the os (again xp pro) on a separate 2G partition, and then never did anything to take advantage of the separate...

    CM Stacker Overkill

It is listed at 14kg, or 30 lbs or so. It shouldn't be too bad to move around once loaded (guessing under 40 lbs), but not something you want to drag around to a lan party a couple of times per week. I don't move my computer much, so I doubt the weight will be a problem. Probably not...

Request for Tips on New Build

In addition to the customary putting all the parts together, installing the os, drivers & firewall & antivirus, etc., what other things should I do to set up my new the computer build? For example, I will use a Raptor 74 as my main hd. I will put the os and my programs and my data on it...

    CM Stacker Overkill

You convinced me. I went with the Black CM Stacker. It willl be big, but it has everything I need and pretty much what I want, and then some. It will be here next week. I really like the three fan design (front, rear and top) with another fan for the HD cage.

New Build - What Else do I Need

I wanted the Raptor as my main drive to take advantage of its speed with the OS and programs, so I really need it for the initial build. I will use the second HD for backup and excess data (if I ever start creating a lot; that is not an issue right now).

    MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum v.s. DFI LanParty UT nForce4

I searched a couple of forums and found that more people seemed dissatisfied with the DFI than the MSIat this time, so I went with the MSI. Only time will tell if one stands out over the other. Both seem like very good boards.

OCZ Modstream vs fortron Blue storm

Either would be excellent. I went with the Fortron as it seemed to have more good and less bad said about it than the OCZ in the comments I saw. Not a scientific way to select, but it was the best I could do in the available time.

    Please Critique My Build

Harcocp sure liked the MSI board, no? It sure looks like a winner, and if you go with the non-SLI model (as I plan to do), their question about the second PCI-e slot probably is rendered pretty much moot.

    Insurance for System Builders

Insurance is one route if you can find something that is cost-effective. You could have the buyer agree to hold you harmless (waive liability) from the things you are concerned about. For example, against failures and related damages attributable to component manufacturer defects. Then you...
