TomTom vs. Garmin? Best sub-$150 GPS units

I'm looking to buy a GPS unit for my car for the first time, probably around Black Friday. There are some nice-looking budget units in the $100-120 range (I've mostly been looking at the nuvi 225 and the TomTom XL 340). That's about all I want to spend right now, and I don't need anything fancy...

    OMFG the computer from hell

I had that happen once. I just unplugged the media reader block (wired to one of the USB headers on the motherboard), installed Windows, and then plugged it back in.

    Hitachi 1TB 7200 rpm SATA drive - $79.99 AR + shipping - CompUSA.com

Nice deal, I grabbed one. I got a "shipping charges changed" message and the shipping went up to $7.99 on the checkout screen... I'll call and see if I can get that fixed. EDIT: got it adjusted back down to $1.99 after a friendly phone call. That makes the total $109.99 + $9.08 (tax to TX...

    Scorching deals at Sams clubs

Just got back from Sams in San Antonio TX... found some discounted repair/return models for a nominal discount ($1000 marked down to ~$800). I asked about display models and was told that they sell them off frequently, but he said they only mark them down 5% (which seems odd). Anyway, no luck in...

    Gaming through video capture card?

My brother wants to play Halo 2 on his CRT instead of on a TV, but he's afraid that there might be some noticeable lag since the video is going through a capture card. Are some capture cards better than others in this area (cards with onboard hardware encoders, for example)?

    Free/open-source backup solution?

Update - for anyone interested, I found something that looks promising: DriveImage XML. It's pretty lightweight, and doesn't have features (AFAICT) like incremental and differential imaging, but it looks like it will work for my use.

    Free/open-source backup solution?

I've got Acronis TrueImage on my main machine for full drive imaging, and it works great. I'd like to also get a backup system going for the rest of the machines in the house, but can't afford dropping $(30 * 4) for a bunch of licenses at the moment. Are there any freeware apps or open-source...

    Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords

I checked out the demo recently and definetly am thinking about buying it. The gameplay reminds me of the Rome: Total War campaign, which I enjoyed highly... except it's in space!

(rig critiques) Budget box for my Dad

@AMDUALY: Thanks for the input. :) @Bobthelost: I considered the 'Dell option', but in this particular case I don't mind playing tech support. (In other cases, by all means, I don't want to ;)) True, the onboard graphics is likely to be capable of running anything he needs - however, it...

Need an explanation of RAW & FAT floppy formats

I *think* "RAW" is just what Windows reports the file system to be if it can't figure out what it is. :P FAT works with all flavors of Windows back to Win95.

(rig critiques) Budget box for my Dad

I've been tasked to build a budget machine for my Dad. He wants something for the basics (web browsing, e-mail, office apps) and wants it to be smooth+responsive. Here's what I came up with (NewEgg prices): Shuttle SK21-G1-SV-V1 Socket 754 Barebones $182.99 AMD Sempron 3100+ Palermo...

    Recommend me a DVR...

That was part of my reasoning for leaning towards the ReplayTV route. It seems that the Replay unit is more open and power user-friendly. I may even try to grab a 5000 series on eBay or whatnot for the full commercial skip feature - I was disappointed when I heard that Tivo had axed it completely.

    Recommend me a DVR...

I'm looking to buy a standalone (set-top) DVR system to replace an antiquitated VCR. Tivo seemed to be the way to go for a while, but I've recently heard bad reports (forced advertising, etc). I've been thinking that a ReplayTV box is the best option. Recommendations? Opinions? (Before...

USB 2.0 Cardbus adapter freezes laptop

A friend of mine has an older laptop (~745MHz P3) that only has USB1.1 ports onboard. We went out and grabbed a USB2.0 CardBus adapter to add USB 2.0 ports to speed up backups to an external drive. The card was detected fine, and the drivers were installed fine, but when I plug in the...

Has anyone tried uTorrent yet? Awesome, Fast, Full-featured BitTorrent client **Now with DHT support**

I *love* uTorrent! Prior to finding this, Azureus was the best client in my mind, but it was also a major resource hog. This has most of the critical Azureus features (and interface ;)) without the major resource usage. Woot!

MSI KM2M Combo-L odd memory problem

I have a MSI KM2M motherboard in my machine (yeah, I'm still on the Socket A platform ;)). I recently noticed a few memory-related errors, and ran memtest86 to check my RAM. Memtest found some errors, so it appeared my memory was bad, but I ran the test again (cold boot) and it came back clean...
