    Is overclocking illegal

The Commodore 64 and Atari 800 were 1MHz and they SURE didn't have a Turbo button! 6510/6502: the "good ol' days"!

    Is overclocking illegal

About the same time I overclocked my AMD 8087 8MHz coprocessor to 10MHz in a Turbo 10 XT clone. My first AMD OC!

    Is overclocking illegal

The first "overclock" probably was a million years ago (whenever we began using tools). Somebody figured out that throwing a rock or stick made us faster and able to catch/kill a fast animal. We continued improving tools and doing things better and that's how we rose to the top of the food...

HALF of a watt cpu in socket A? CONFIRMED

Gotta hand it to Dell, they can build a million computers better than any of us can. But most of us can build a few better than Dell ever has! This low power mystery CPU may change the third world countries!

    AMD Athlon 2500 XP OC...

Fern's method is the best way to be sure. If you are just curious and don't feel comfortable tweaking your BIOS (yet!), when did you buy the CPU? If you got it in 2003 there's an excellent chance it is unlocked. If you bought it new in 2004 or 2005 then it's almost certainly superlocked.

    Socket A 3200+ vs Athlon64 3200+?

Glad to hear it's working well, Gstanfor! I didn't mean to scare you off KVR400, just inform you of Kingston's and ASUS' official stances on the combo. Anyway KVR400 works for 7 out of 7 nForce2 Ultra 400 systems we mentioned here. It is understandable that an older non-Ultra chipset would...

    a7n8x vs a7n8x-X

Which A7N8X boards do you mean? The A7N8X-E Deluxe vs the A7N8X-X? A7N8X-E Deluxe overclocks an XP-M2200+ just fine (see signature). About any nForce2 board would including the A7N8X-X but I'd rather have the extra features of the -E Deluxe. Of course these are ASUS boards not ABit...

    AMD Athlon 2500 XP OC...

Assuming you can change the multiplier of your XP2500+ (have you proven it is unlocked?) I would drop it to 10 or 9 and run Memtest86+ to find the highest FSB. Then you can up the multiplier 0.5 at a time and test again. Also, is this the rev. 2.0 board? Those are good up to 225 or so while...
  10. Q

    Socket A 3200+ vs Athlon64 3200+?

Yes, there have been dozens of reports of this problem with the A7N8X 2.0 and A7N8X-E. Kingston doesn't support the -E revision either at DDR400 speed. ASUS recommends exchanging the Kingston ValueRAM and crossing your fingers that you get different DIP chips on the new modules (very hit or miss...

    Socket A 3200+ vs Athlon64 3200+?

Well I'm glad you're happy but that doesn't mean that's the answer for every application. It would be insane for me to dump four systems that easily do the job when I can continue using them and pick my right time to go A64. I'm not quite ready to say Socket A is history. I bought these systems...
  12. Q

    Socket A 3200+ vs Athlon64 3200+?

Gstanfor, I have Kingston PC3200 ValueRAM (2x512MB) in each of the four systems below. No problems at all. But I will warn you there are numerous reports that the A7N8X has problems with this RAM at 200/400MHz. Kingston does not officially support the A7N8X at DDR400 speed with this RAM. You...

    Socket A 3200+ vs Athlon64 3200+?

DAPUNISHER is right! XP mobiles are unlocked. I have four and can set the multiplier to what I want. The last one was manufactured in January 2005 and the earliest was made in the spring of 2004 so nothing has changed. I'm surprised anyone at this late date would say they are locked. Anyway...

What type of protective packaging do OEM processors ship in?

Ditto, my four XP mobiles came from Newegg in plastic clamshells with foam to protect the pins. This was wrapped in bubble wrap and stuck in a box big enough for a motherboard! Well protected.
  15. Q

    The Color of Athlon XP-M's

Thanks, Joe, and good luck with it. Color of the package shouldn't make any difference. It all comes down to the stepping of the core (and finally, dumb luck). The only brownie I've ever got was an old desktop XP2400+. So these new CPUs don't say "Assembled In Malaysia" on the "green or...

Socket A Sempron vs Athlon XP

Both are Bartons (that Sempron is the only Barton Sempron - the other Socket A Semprons are Thoroughbred or Thorton cores). The XP2800+ is a little faster at stock speed due to the 12.5 multiplier vs. the Sempron's 12.0. But if overclocking, 12.0 will make it easier to raise the FSB from 166 to...

Sempron 754 vs Athlon XP Mobile Combo

And the DFI BIOSes are coveted by people with other motherboards (that have the same chipset). Some modded nForce2 BIOSes like Trats have large sections of DFI code grafted in to replace less efficient code. My A7N8X boards ran much better with the Trats BIOS so I feel fortunate to benefit from...

    Worth Upgrading from Overclocked Barton 2500+ (2200Mhz) to a A64 3500+?

Hey, xXgambitXx, that's a pretty good link! I've been playing with Tom's benchmark thingie and it's not bad at all.
  21. Q

Sempron 754 vs Athlon XP Mobile Combo

Irene, you've got the same problem we all have - how to compromise between what we need, what we want and what is overkill! Your old Duron system was doing what you needed but truthfully, who wants that today. When building a system today I'd consider what I need now but have an eye to what I...

    Worth Upgrading from Overclocked Barton 2500+ (2200Mhz) to a A64 3500+?

Benchmarks are nice but really it comes down to what you want. Is your system too slow right now? Is there something it just doesn't do well anymore? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out A64s will have better benchmarks but it's up to you to determine when you need to make the jump...
  23. Q

Sempron 754 vs Athlon XP Mobile Combo

Irene, I haven't bought a refurbished item from Newegg but expect parts may be missing. For a CPU it's not a big deal but for a motherboard that could be cables, connectors, I/O plate, CD and manual. The I/O plate and proprietary cables could be a problem. Just thought I'd better mention that...

overclocking mobile AthlonXP - noob help.

Well, it's really not for the beginner but here's one website (German): http://ocinside.de/index_d.html and if you search more you'll find it - as it is common. Click on Workshop (the icon with the red W on the left) then select: Interaktive Pin-Mod Anleitung für Athlon XP, T-Bred und Barton...
  25. Q

Sempron 754 vs Athlon XP Mobile Combo

It isn't easy is it, Irene! I think Socket 939 makes more sense for the future than Socket A or 754 but does cost more. A refurbished CPU can be good (is this Newegg?) but someone had trouble with it and returned it. That could be (and probably is) due to incompetence but could be because the...
  26. Q

Sempron 754 vs Athlon XP Mobile Combo

Well, it depends on how good your RAM is and how high you can get the HTT. With slow RAM you will need a divider.

    xp-m 2400 problems

Unless you do a pin mod or wire trick your A7N8X-E can't provide a multiplier higher than 12.5 with your mobile (5.0 through 12.5 are it). No big deal, just try 11x200 and see how that goes. BTW, when you set the multiplier to 14 it actually was at 6 (subtract 8 from multipliers from 13 up)...
  28. Q

overclocking mobile AthlonXP - noob help.

Lonyo is right, the A7N8X will only give lower multipliers with a mobile (5-12.5). You will need to do a pin mod or wire trick to access 13-20. You'll probably want 15 or 16 depending on how well your components work together.
  29. Q

Sempron 754 vs Athlon XP Mobile Combo

It is a mobile Sempron: http://www.thedigerati.us/info/amdcpuchart.html#sempm That must be total cache since L2 should be 128K.
  30. Q

Sempron 754 vs Athlon XP Mobile Combo

Just saw this today: Socket 754 will be Sempron only soon - no more A64s for 754! http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=28&threadid=1580944&enterthread=y Irene, this doesn't need to affect your decision as long as you're sure you won't want to upgrade to an A64 CPU in the future.
  31. Q

Sempron 754 vs Athlon XP Mobile Combo

Irene, it's tough to answer your question. First let's discuss the cheapest alternative - say your old motherboard still was working - would the Duron 900 system really be satisfactory and would you continue using it for "quite some time"? If the answer is yes, it's a shame the board died. But...

    MPX2, Barton 2600 (166) & Upgradeware

... or a low voltage desktop Barton XP2500+, XP2600+ or XP2800+. These 1.5v CPUs have been reported by many to be fully unlocked. A couple of months ago they were cheap, too. But now the cost more than a mobile. So get a mobile!

My New Athlon XP Mobile 2600+ Processor... any good?

I have an XP-M2600+ made a week before yours - IDYHA0502RPMW - and it does about the same as my AXMG2600FQQ4C AQYHA0421FPMW from last year. (And about what BlueWeasel said). I run it at 218x11 @ 1.675v all the time. Yours should be a nice CPU!

    AMD vs Intel

Hey, AMD is missing out on a great advertizing campaign. They could have the Jolly Green Giant walking alongside one of those stupid little blue men from the Intel ads. "Greenie" would be ambling along at a leisurely pace while the blue guy is running flat out and sweating like crazy to keep up...
  36. Q

    Socket A vs 754

How about putting more time and thought into your overclock. You may be able to get 2.2GHz stable for no cost or very little. Changes to vCore, vDIMM and RAM timings cost nothing if your power supply and case&CPU cooling are adequate.

    AMD 2500 BARTON HELP!

I assume you have an nForce2 boards. A lot of BIOSes for these boards have trouble with the "terrible tens". Multipliers of 10 and 10.5 often won't POST but 11 up are fine. My four A7N8X boards with the latest ASUS BIOS wouldn't POST with these multipliers when a mobile XP was installed. When I...

What is limiting my Barton overclock?

My four XP-M AQYHAs do quite well. I run them day-in, day-out at 218x11@1.675v or about 2.4GHz. They will run Windows stable at 200x12.5. Maybe the first AQYHAs weren't as good - mine were manufactured from the 21st through the 40th weeks of 2004 XP-M2200+ AXMD2200FJQ4C AQYHA0427DPOW 1.35V...

What is limiting my Barton overclock?

Hmmm, interesting! Your AXDL2600DLV4D is not a mobile XP, it's a low voltage desktop XP2600+. These are supposed to overclock well but are not expected to be quite as good as mobile XPs. So that might explain why it may top out before 2.4GHz. People have speculated that they were intended to be...

What is limiting my Barton overclock?

Fardringle, I have four XP-Ms that will run stable in Windows at 12.5x200. Never have tried higher because I ran out of multiplier there (the A7N8X needs a pin mod to send 13 and above to mobiles). I don't run them that way, instead they're at 218x11 which is fast enough for me. I also...
