    SLI capable MB

I have owned that Asrock board for a year now. I bought it last Black Firday when it was on sale for $105. My oldest plays on it for hours every day. Never had a problem with it. I think its a good board for $100.

    Considering a qnix QX2710 matte

If you order through NewEgg, you can return it to NewEgg as per their International Seller policy within the first 30 days for a refund if you don't like it. I would expect shipping & restock fee's to apply just like any other monitor return. Furthermore you can return it to NewEgg within 90...

    Considering a qnix QX2710 matte

I have had mine Qnix for almost 2 weeks. I did not get the PP, just the regular one. I have zero dead pixels. Color is decent. It overclocks to 120mhz. I will not go bakc to 1080p. I did spend the extra $10 for expedited shipping ($20 total). I ordered it Tues morning, I was using it Thur...

    [H|ocp & HW360] R9-290 can be unlocked to 290X

I received my 2nd 290, this time a XFX that I ordered on the 21st from NE. I wanted the BF4 code, so I jumped on the XFX. I figured no loss if it did not flash. It will not unlock. I read somewhere somebody ordered one on the 18th from NE and theirs would not unlock either. Guess original...

    R9 290 Squealing noises

Its not fan noise. When running bench marks and the fps get real high, or like maybe when in menu mode of some games, the coils make a whine sound. Kind of image them as "free wheeling". No load, but still running flat out. Example. 3DMark, default Ice Storm, I see 1600-2400 fps, coil...

    1440p w/o AA vs 1080p w/4xAA (performance difference?)

I love my new 1440. I went with one of those S. Korean models that use the Samsung panel. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...9SIA3PC1705689 $340 + $10 shipping from S.Korea. I paid $10 extra because I was in a hurry. Ordered Tue morning, shipped from S.K. and had it Thur night. $20 total...

    R9 290 Squealing noises

Could be coil whine. If so, not uncommon during very high frame rate situations. Turn on vsync and see if it goes away.

    FX-8350 CPU bottleneck?

I tried the 290 in my 8350 rig while waiting for my 4770k stuff to show up. I was not impressed overall with the couple of games I played, as well as benchmarks using the 8350. I did not get a nice smile on my face until I plugged it into the Intel system. I had tried the GTX 680 in both the...

    [H|ocp & HW360] R9-290 can be unlocked to 290X

I had a heatsink kit from a Gelid. Its almost a perfect selection of sinks. It had thermal tape, though the kit was short 1 strip :(. Some got fubar'd by me. Had to use a little 50/50 eopox/paste to get it done. I will start a new thread with a pic when its done. Had to modify one sink for the...

    [H|ocp & HW360] R9-290 can be unlocked to 290X

I got the nerve to try the flash on my PC 290. I used the PC 290x bios. I may switch to the Asus Bios later for the volt unlock. GPUZ now shows it as a 290x, all shaders, etc. Base clock 1030, mem clock 1250. I ordered a XFX the other day, hoping for another. At the very worse, I get BF4 and...

    R9-290(X) Voltage Control

That should not be hard for one to do, as the card has dual bios. The 1 dip switch setting should be the original 290 bios, and the other should be the flashed 290x version. If I remember reading the review, it said one is a read only, and the other is a read/write.

Radeon R9 290x QUADFIRE (Hell yeah)

...And there lies the difference. Put a ring on that finger. Just see what happens. Do you know what the difference between a new job and a new bride? After 3 months, the job will still suck. To the OP, nice setup man.

Yeah, I wonder if I will still get it once my 1440 shows up. I only get it when fps is real high, using a 1080 at the moment.

    R9 290 *Complete* review list

What is your frame rate? Whine would not be uncommon if you are running very high fps? I have heard this of AMD and Nvidia. Mine does it when it gets well into the hundreds and higher. If you are hearing it during menu loads or such...I would say its normal. Your fps during those times are most...

For those currently/recently in the market for a high end gpu

Remember, you are not using a Crossfire bridge any longer, so if your board allows it, you can space your cards apart by using a lower x16 slot. Allowing for a 2.5 or 3 slot solutions. I just got my 290 today, and Gelid...but dumb me selected the wrong one...got the A version and not V2...

Spin Off: AT's Testing Methods & Uber Mode

I kind of wonder if AMD called "Uber" mode "Standard" mode, along with a "Quiet" mode, would there be all of this controversy. Or, if they left them as "Uber" and "Quiet" but the dip switch had a center location the did nothing, and shipped it in the center position so the user had to select...

Spin Off: AT's Testing Methods & Uber Mode

I don't think you are grasping the difference between Quiet mode & Uber mode, as you are relating it to overclocking. Overclocking is changing the settings to exceed the advertised performance, such as cpu or memory speed. I realize you know this. I only note it so I can explain the contrast...

Want to get a 2nd GTX 680 at a good price

Yeah, now is a good time to sell if you want to get the most for your 680's. Some people want to keep up with the latest stuff, selling now and reinvesting in the newer stuff is definitely not a bad idea. If the OP is looking for simplicity, just spending $350 or less on a matching 4GB card...

Want to get a 2nd GTX 680 at a good price

I have been pondering this for weeks. 680 SLI is plenty of performance(+ 4GB), but everyone wants $350'ish for them, USED. That's outrageous being you can get a NEW 290 for $400. I would not buy a 2nd 680 until they come down to $250'ish. They should come down as these better cards become more...

    Battlefield 3: CPU for 1440p?

You are not going to find many comparisons regarding the 960T. You may be able to guestimate it by looking at some Thuban core x6 reviews. I think I remember some runs at 1050, 1600, 1200 but don't recall 1440. I, not too long ago was in the same boat as you. I also had a 960t unlocked, a...

    R9 290X Vs GTX 780 & Titan Benching

Thanks for trying to help, but as I tried to imply, I have seen them. That Chinese test was supposedly done in Silent mode, fan 40-43%??? And it was not 1440 but a cumulative scored of both 1080/1440 as well the average of a few games. Averages over two different resolutions, one of which I...

    R9 290X Vs GTX 780 & Titan Benching

Could you post a link for us. I would like to see what it does in 1440 using the Uber mode with current games. I have seen the 4k review(impressive, but I am not going to be gaming in 4k anytime soon), and I have seen the 1080 reviews that used the Silent mode. I would like to see some 1440 numbers.

    Ready to buy new monitor

Thanks to all for their input. Jack, I have looked at the two you mentioned, mostly because they were the 20" LCD's listed in the "gaming" list of recommended monitors. The NEC for $650, while not out of my overall price range, seems steep for a 20" even considering its gaming ability. The $350...

    Ready to buy new monitor

Wanting a min of 20" screen that must be a excellent gamer, larger the better but it needs to be fast, with good color/contrast. LCD seems to have lots of trade-offs to get one or the other. Higher end CRT's seem to have always been ideal, so I am ok with the idea of still using them (I have...

    Advice on 939/AGP board selection

I appreciate the effort, thank you. I think you mean uli m1689? can't seem to find a reference to a 1685, not even on ULI's site. Abit and Gigabyte do use the uli m1689-but they are AGP only. The Asrock uses the uli m1695 and supports both agp x8 and pci-e x16, and currently is the only one...

    Advice on 939/AGP board selection

Currently I am still using socket A stuff, but Santa promised a Opty 165, but said I would have to supply the rest of the upgrades myself. My problem is that I need to upgrade in steps, the first step would be a 939 system using my current 6600gt agp card, the next stepping up to a high end...

I had the same thing happen with my Optorite. I changed discs, etc. Finally I found that if I slowed the burn down to a lower setting-everything was great again. I chalk it up to the burner coming to the end of it life...I did burn a couple of hundered discs by then. I now have a NEC, works...

what do you think of this pc

You could do better for the about the same money. AGP and socket 754 seem to be going away, 939 and PCIx16 will be around for a while longer-so later you can be sure stuff will be around and you can upgrade cheaply. Unless you already have a AGP card, cd-rom, floppy, keyboard, mouse, speakers...

So what kinda things can this old PC do?

OC it to 2.2ghz, up the ram to a 1g, and drop in a good card and you should be able to play most games at low/moderate settings. I enjoy mine everyday, although I feel a 939 system upgrade coming on.
