    Which Linux is best???

I use Kubuntu. It fills your qualifications at any rate. As far as stability, I've found it to be just as stable as standard Ubuntu, but YMMV.

    Linux-Debian-Ubuntu

That won't work in ubuntu since it uses the sudo system. Root has no password by default. You'd have to do sudo su (or sudo -s) for that to work. Ubuntu 4.10 (warty) uses Xfree86 4.3.0. Ubuntu 5.04 (hoary) uses X.org 6.8.1

Linux - Nvidia 6629 installation done

Also, you may want to try using a Hoary install CD. I'm not sure if your card is even supported with the 61.11 drivers shipped in warty. The reason that is there is to give instructions on how to add a launcher to the nvidia-settings program.

    Which Linux for this PC?

Isn't that a liveCD distro? I'm sure you could install it to the hard drive, but why not go with pure slack, or even better debian or a debian-based distro? BSD would be good too.

    Linux-Debian-Ubuntu

There's absolutely no reason to change the permissions on XF86Config-4. He merely needs to edit the file as root (or in the case of ubuntu, using sudo). su means switch user, not super user.

Can I use AOL while using LINUX?

If AOL has a linux client, I suppose it is possible. I really don't know. P2P - bittorrent (several clients out there), dcgui (direct connect), nicotine, gIFT, aMule (edonkey/emule), and in the future Shareaza will be ported (port is in the works). There's probably plenty of others out there.

Want to learn Linux, help start me out

For that system I recommend Beatrix, a ubuntu-based distro. Your system lacks enough RAM to run a full blown ubuntu desktop well imho.

reinstalling, followed by Linux install.....distro question

You know...there are opensource drivers for NVIDIA chipsets (forcedeth for networking, and another for sound in both ALSA and OSS). Ubuntu installs both of these and thus you'll have sound and networking out of the box. NVIDIA SHOULD release specs for these things, but the current open source...

    Wireless card with Suse 9.2

For your DLink card, you need ndiswrapper, and your windows drivers. Do some googling about ndiswrapper to get some help setting it up. I have the same wifi card in my laptop (I'm pretty sure anyway...It uses the Mattell chipset) and it works fine in ubuntu linux. It did not work out of the box...

    Windows MCE...

It is XP service pack 2 with extras for media center pcs. That's it. I'm running a very minimal installation of it (used nLite) and it runs very well.

Any reason NOT to use XP for a Windows machine?

I say it depends on the hardware. Low end systems would be better off using windows 2000. I don't recommend 98se to anyone no matter what. 2003 is for servers, so run it on servers. You aren't going to really get anything extra running it on a desktop/client

If it supports it, you probably have to mount the windows partititon(s) and then have the scanner scan them.

Wants LINUX on an old PC

Ubuntu might run well on it as long as you use a lightweight gui, no gnome. If it had more memory you'd be able to run gnome though. I run it on a 450 mhz pentium 3 with 224 MB of ram and a 6 gig hard drive (laptop) and it does very well with gnome and other goodies.

Depends on whether you want to jump on the SLI bandwagon or not. When things start slowin' down you could buy another 6600GT for cheap, or upgrade to the newest NVIDIA card.

Mother's computer is extremely slow *UPDATE*, PICS NOW INCLUDED!*

Windows 2000 does have the compatibility mode like XP. It's just not on by default. If you want to turn it on, type this in the run command box. regsvr32 %systemroot%\apppatch\slayerui.dll

Changing default partition to boot to in WinXP?

Souns like the SATA drive doesn't have a master boot record. You could try and and fix that using the recovery console from the XP CD. I think the command is fixmbr.

    SLI compatible with Windows 64-bit???

I see a reason why it wouldn't be: Drivers The latest 64 bit NVIDIA drivers might take care of that issue though. Not sure.
