Strange Temps w/Q9550 and Gigabyte EP45-UD3LR

I just upgraded this rig last night from an AMD X2 5200+. New CPU/mobo is a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3LR motherboard and Q9550 with stock HSF. No overclocking yet. 8GB of RAM (4x2GB Geil PC-6400) and a Sapphire Radeon HD3850 512MB video card. Upon booting and poking around in the BIOS, the...

    Whitelist methodology on *internal* firewall?

First some quick background: I work for a multiple entity financial holding company with roughly 30 locations and 5 companies. Single point of external connectivity which is heavily fortified and actively monitored. Additionally, we have dedicated firewalls in addition to the routers at each...

    Extra RAM FS...

I bought this a couple of months ago, and later realized you have to bump the voltage to even get the system to boot. I've since moved on and filled my empty DIMM slots to the hilt with GSkill, Patriot, and A-Data, and these OCZ sticks aren't doing anyone any good. I'm willing to take a hit on...

    Pre-emptive shoutout to scottv67...

Well, by this time tomorrow, you should be past me, relegating me to the lowly position of #8 on the TeAm. I just figured I'd hand you a few :beer::beer::beer::beer:'s as you soared on by, in hopes that you'd pass a word or two to Santa that I've been a good boy this year, and really...

    4x1GB vs. 2x2GB...and maybe 2x2 + 2x1?

OK, right now, I have 4 x 1GB sticks of Corsair in a dual boot Ultimate 32-bit / Business 64-bit setup. First, is there any benefit, timing of the sticks being equal, to running 2x2GB vs. my present 4x1GB? Second, if I go 2x2GB, I'll have 2 free RAM slots, which I could easily stick 2 of...

4GB RAM and booting from CD

Well, here goes. If anyone can help me, I know the folks here at A&T can. I recently upgraded to 4GB of RAM on my main dual boot setup. Problem is, my wonderful backup tool---Norton Ghost (DOS version) on a bootable CD that my friend "Bart" helped me configure, no longer works. Seems the...

4GB and booting from a CD...

Well, I found a drawback to 4GB of RAM in a system. Seems my trusty old Ghost 2003 boot CD (created with Bart's assistance) won't work due to the 4GB of RAM. Oh yeah, I can get it to work very simply by removing a couple sticks of RAM, but I hate to remove and replace 2 sticks of RAM every...

    WooHoo!!!

Sorry GLeeM, but my Miami Hurricanes just got the snot kicked out of them by OU, and then I see I finally made it into the top 10, so I just had to focus on the good (is there such as thing as a hopeless optomist?). You folks just can't imagine how much I enjoy crunching for the TeAm! It's...

How to block or secure Wireless when connected to wired LAN?

My company, like so many, has several laptop users who have a need for internet connectivity while travelling. Wireless makes this very easy, but is also a security risk. From a usability standpoint, we can't disable the wireless. But, when they are connected to our wired LAN, we would like...

OT: Prayer request for my son...

I know some of you know that my son has had some serious medical issues over the past couple of years. Well, lately things have gotten a bit worse for him. Since the beginning of June, he has been hospitalized for 27 days. The symptoms have run the gamut from Irritable Bowel Syndrome...

How would a 32-bit server OS play with mixed 32/64-bit clients?

Right now, I have a small home network running Longhorn Beta 3 (32-bit) and three clients, two 32-bit Vista and one 32-bit XP Pro. My network is a domain, with a single domain controller. Two of the 3 clients are dual-boot, and I'm considering setting up a dual boot 32/64 bit Vista client to...

    Vista-compatible NNTP newsreader

My only complaint about Vista (no, really, I mean it!) is the incredibly poor performance of Windows Mail. Since I use Outlook as my primary mail client, all I really need is a simple newsreader with a clean interface. Any suggestions?

    Low Profile RAM?

Just built a new home system (see my Home Build on my rigs page) that has 2GB of Corsair memory. Given the sharp drop in memory prices, I was considering pumping it up to 4GB, but my heatsink won't let me use the last RAM slot (of the 4 available) due to a height issue. Is there a decent...

    F@H on Vista...

Well, I'm taking the plunge both at home and work, and am now dual booting Vista 5728 on my main home rig and main work rig. I'm running 5.02 and it seems to be working just fine in Vista, though performance is certainly taking a hit---about a 20-30% hit. FAHlog indicates that while each 5000...

    Question: Folding on a laptop...

I was quite excited to get a new Dell Core Duo for a co-worker, but after starting up only one folding instance (at only 70% usage of Core#1) on this dual core laptop, temps shot up rather quickly to 57C. Is that normal for a laptop? If it were a desktop, my first thought would be "Yikes!"...

    Fairly important F@H info

Apparantly, Stanford is out of timeless (deadlineless) WU's. There is no estimate of when there will be more available. If anyone has any boxes set up for these WU's, then you should either reconfigure to accept regular WU's, or simply be advised that your production will impacted accordingly.

It seems that there have been issues the past few days where WU's are being submitted but results not counted, as described in this thread. I know I've been shorted a few WU's the last two days, including at least a 2124 and an 1862. Stupid me overreacted, tried to cut my losses on those boxes...

    OT: Son having surgery tomorrow...

Just wanted to let you guys know I won't be around for a few days. My 6 year old is having surgery tomorrow, and I'll be occupied for a few days. It's fairly serious stuff. He's having a procedure known as fundoplication, where they essentially take part of your stomach and wrap it around the...

    Well guys, time for vacation...

I'm taking the family on a trek from Delaware to Colorado starting in about 11 hours. Half my fleet will be shut down (the only ones I can really count on are my two Xeon servers, since my company won't be able to work without them). Don't worry, June 19 everything will be back online. Hold...

Cleaning house on some memory, older hardware, and more!

New PC added to the fold...

I just finished upgrading the kids' PIII-550 to a Sempron 3100+. She's set up and folding right now. Might help to stop some of the recent "General Mayhem" slippage we've had of late... On a more depressing note, I might lose my two Xeon servers sometime this summer. Some re-org at work...

Periodic high pitched whine from monitor...

I've had this monitor for just about 2 years now. It's a traditional 19-inch CRT. A few months ago, I began having some issues with my DSL at home, specifically, slow speeds, poor signal-to-noise ratios, and disconnects. The modem had been sitting on my desk, about a foot (maybe a bit less)...

Question of mine from another thread...

I had a power supply partially die on my boss's PC today, and had some questions. I know many of you guys don't venture onto the other boards very often, but thought you might find this situation interesting, or better yet shed some light on what might have happened. Did I mention how much I...

    Somewhat technical power supply question...

:| My boss, our CEO, calls me this morning and tells me that his PC is VERY slow, slower than a crawl. He tried rebooting (at least he tried something!) but that didn't help. I figured spyware, and went to his office to check it out. Turns out, everything in his system was fine, excpet...

    F@H and dual boot question...

I think I know the answer, just want to confirm. My home PC dual boots (both WinXP - mainly for beta testing and other purposes) and when running Seti, I just ran it from one folder regardless of which XP instance I had booted. Worked like a charm, same WU processed, no lost production or...

OT - Son having surgery tomorrow...

My 6 year old is having Sinus surgery tomorrow to clear out a complete obstruction on one side. It's fairly routine surgery, but not very pleasant. I'd appreciate it if my TeAm-mates could keep him in your thoughts/prayers over the next day two.

Seti Classic - Anyone having trouble uploading wu's?

Seems that for about the past couple of hours I've only been able to upload 2 WU's, with the rest just waiting. Seems like their typical server dropping connections issue, but their tech status page reflects that all is fine. Is it just me

I think Wolfsraider is keeping an eye on me...

Mike seems to be keeping tabs on me. To wit: On 10/24, I increased output from 62 to 67. Mike went from 72 to 76. On 10/25, my output dropped back to 66, and Mike dropped back to 72. On 10/26, I jumped up to 72, and Mike boosted his output to 97 (just to make me look bad, I think)...

    Small SETI milestones...

Moved up another notch in my class, to #17, and broke through the 7,000 WU mark. For less than a year of "serious" crunching, and not much horsepower at my disposal, it puts a nice :D on my face, when I think about it...

    Stupid F@H question...

OK, when setting up clients for F@H, what are the machine #'s used for, and can they be used on more than 1 physical machine? I just recently started folding, and have set up 6 of my non-Seti boxes to fold. As I switch more over, how do I handle more than 10 PC's, since it looks like the...

Which projects' software allows you to limit CPU usage?

My existing fleet running Seti Classic has no trouble working at 100%, however there are several other PC's that I "could" bring on line for other DC projects if I could limit the CPU usage to say 50% or so. The reason is that these PC's are Compaq's, with very poor cooling, and when running...

    Small personal Seti milestone...

Just passed 2.000 years in total CPU time. Nothing big. It should be a nice weekend though, since I'm on track (barring any power issues at work over the weekend) to hit 5000 WU's by the time I roll into work on Monday! Kind of a modest milestone, but since I've only been really crunching...
