I have cleaned out my msconfig startup list...

I don't think you'll find options for NerCheck under Files/Preferences in Nero. I think you need to re-enable it in MSCONFIG, restart the system, then turn it off using the right-click context menu of the System Tray icon for the program. Unfortunately, I'm not sure about this. I've always just...

I have cleaned out my msconfig startup list...

FWIW, I wouldn't recommend using the MSCONFIG utility to control what starts up and what doesn't except, perhaps, while diagnosing a problem. I would recommend reinstating both of those startup items and then using the configuration features of Nero and AVG Anti-Virus to determine whether or...

    shutdown problem

Sounds like a hardware driver causes a system fault during shutdown. Suggest going into the System Properties dialog, Advanced tab, Startup and Recovery button. On that Startup and Recovery dialog you want to UNcheck Automatically restart. There's a chance, then, that the system will show you a...

    Clarion

A quick Google revealed www.softvelocity.com, comp.lang.clarion newsgroup, news.softvelocity.com, www.clarionmag.com, and www.icetips.com as sources of information about Clarion. I know nothing about it. Only responded because wife used to use it in her work. She loved it and was distraught...

Crash Your PC Using HTML Code

Dell Precision M70 with 2 GB RAM, NVIDIA Quadro FX Go1400 with 256 MB RAM, version 6.14.10.7023 drivers. No problem with Firefox 1.06 (though it just shows a big brown screen). But If I try to hit the link with IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519 the system spends a little time trying to...

Ek Gads! Help - maybe screwed up clients dell!

Did the client's notebook come with reinstallation media for the operating system? If so, you should be using that to reinstall the operating system -- for two reasons: 1. That OEM image of the operating system will contain the appropriate drivers for the hardware on the system. 2. That...

    Synchronising files

I downloaded and tested this beta PowerToy for Windows XP just to see if it would work for various friends who need to synchronize directories. It's about as easy as a manual system gets. I use Beyond Compare from Scooter Software for my own systems.

Windows XP takes AGES!! to shut down

You're welcome. I suggest using the diagnostic functions of UPHClean to see if you can figure out what's hanging at shutdown time. Although it's pretty easy to identify the proximal cause of a hive not unloading, it's not always so easy to be sure that that proximal cause is actually the real...

The reason why laptops are called notebooks.

A long time ago there were portables and laptops. The term laptop indicated that the system a) could be battery operated, and b) could be held on the lap while in use. When I first paid attention to anyone using the term "notebook" a number of years later it was Dell, and their response to my...

Laptop has no DVI natively but DVI on replicator question

To be safe you should ask a Dell rep (by e-mail) before purchasing. That way you have the guarantee in writing. But, yes, the DVI port should work. My M70 is the same way. Just a VGA port on the back of the notebook, but I use the DVI port on the port replicator to drive a 2005fpw so that I have...

Why open source software will not appeal to "joe blow"

One thing about open source software that should appeal to any librarian is the basic premise for the existence of the software. By nature real librarians (not those who just do the job for a living, but those who are really into the idea of sharing knowledge) should be able to grasp the concept...

Windows XP takes AGES!! to shut down

If you check out this article and use the information therein along with the linked download location at Microsoft for the UPHClean utility I think you'll probably have what you need. You can use the troubleshooting technique (requiring a registry edit) in the article or just install the utility...

    Firefox and Adobe PDF

Interesting. I've been using AR with Firefox all along. I did notice that a new Reader update (7.02) that I installed today specifically mentioned that it fixed some sort of issue when using the Reader from within a browser.

    Firefox and Adobe PDF

You might want to try disabling any extensions you've installed in Firefox. If that fixes the problem, try re-enabling the extensions one-at-a-time to see if one of them is interfering with proper function. None of the 1.0x versions of Firefox I've used has had any problem handling PDFs.

    quick launch icon

You could rename the icons, adding prefixes like 01-, 02-, etc. Then when you sort them by name they'll line up in numeric order. I did this for my wife. As for me, I just leave them where they lie.

Oh...my...uh...just...oh...my I'm an old man, and I've seen a lot of dung flung over the years. Until recently I had thought that (some) men would never be eclisped as techno-boolsheeters, but this woman has taken the art form to a new low -- a low that I hitherto would have thought...

Updates were unable to be successfully installed

I'm going to paste a portion of a Microsoft support e-mail below. Before I got my two problematic systems to update properly this time around I opened a trouble ticket with MS, and this was a part of their response. These are all maneuvers that I have done before to get recalcitrant systems to...

Do to the browser (IE) what my wife does to me. No, not that, silly. Empty the cache! (Seriously. I had the same problem on two of our four WinXP boxes at home. Required emptying the browser cache and rebooting on both systems.)

    Windows XP Pro License Issue

Interesting. All our academic software, and all that I've seen others using, was purchased directly from Microsoft online. I didn't remember ever seeing upgrade versions in the list. So, I'd guess that, if the originator of the thread is using an upgrade version, that pretty much cinches it...

    Windows XP Pro License Issue

I'm a little confused by your assertion that the academic Windows XP Pro license is an "upgrade". I wasn't aware that academic licenses were ever anything but full licenses. If it is, indeed, an upgrade license, then the Windows 2000 Professional license which was used as an upgrade basis is not...

    OK to touch LCD screens

Exactly! I notify people who sit or stand near my workstation that the area between me and my monitors is a "no fly zone". If they want to show me something on the screen they can make use of verbal communication to describe what they're talking about, or they can ask to borrow the mouse. That...

    Notebooks and autoclick =\

Yup. Cursor movement is too slow at the default settings for my taste on all touchpads. It's barely adequate when I crank the speed all the way up and set acceleration to maximum, too. But the tap-to-click feature drives me nuts. If I want to click on an item I'll use a button. The closest thing...

    Notebooks and autoclick =\

This problem might actually be a combination of the tap-to-click feature of the touchpad (They do it with the little trackpoints, too.) and the dumb Windows Explorer feature that causes apps to launch with a single click. That option can be changed from single click to double click on the...

Prediction: If you don't do a clean installation your friend will pester the hell out of you because of all of the weird crap that will happen after the upgrade. You'll wind up wishing you had done the job right in the first place. But take care that you can reinstall all of the friend's...

Hard Dirves always die on me. :(

Since it really wasn't mentioned by others I thought I would bring up another possibility. I have a story that illustrates it nicely, too. My brother's best friend of 30+ years was known, somewhat undeservedly, as a real computing guru at the company in which they both work. I was always...

Why doesn't Windows 2000 ask me to confirm file overwrite?

Hmmm. Well, I guess I should have asked those questions earlier. I was thinking that you were performing the copying from the command line interface. AFAIK the COPYCMD environment variable doesn't affect the overwrite warning given by Explorer. This still doesn't mean, of course, that PCAnywhere...

Why doesn't Windows 2000 ask me to confirm file overwrite?

We'll probably need more information. How (exactly) are you attempting to move the files? Please spare no details. In other words, are you using Windows Explorer or copy / move commands at the CLI? If using Windows Explorer are you using drag and drop, right-click context menu, toolbar buttons...

Why doesn't Windows 2000 ask me to confirm file overwrite?

Open a CMD prompt and type "set" (no quotes" and hit Enter. Do you see an environment variable "COPYCMD=/Y" in the listing? If so, that would explain it. You're talking about the use of COPY, MOVE, and XCOPY not asking you if you want to overwrite, correct? Eliminate that environment variable...

    Printing locally via Terminal Server?

That works just dandy for the local system, but it doesn't do much for the server. It just demands that the server install the drivers for the printer. Depending on the user account, how the server is configured, and on the printer being used that can work out anywhere from semi-okay to...

    Printing locally via Terminal Server?

AFAIK to do this "properly" using only the software you've got you have to install proper (WHQL-certified) printer drivers for each of your users' printers on that TS system. One word. Ugh. More words -- if you install the wrong driver, certified or not, you're in a world of trouble. Some...
