    Motherboard/BIOS issues with Q9300?

I'm thinking about building a 3D workstation for home using the new 45 nanometer Q9300 quad-core processor. From what I've read today, however, it sounds like a lot of P35-based motherboards have problems working with this CPU. Some reviews at NewEgg said that certain motherboards worked fine if...

    Appalled with Vista

Unfortunately, I was not involved in the ordering process. If I had been, I probably would have recommended a Core 2 Duo. Your experience makes me feel a little better about trying out Vista Ultimate on my Mac Pro.

    Appalled with Vista

Don't worry, gerwen. I'll get over my wrestling match with Vista and live to try it another day. Hopefully on a homebuild, and not a Dell. ;-) I just don't know about the client. His business switched away from Windows for the most part due to licensing issues. In this particular case, they...

    APC UPS overloaded

SuperNaruto nailed it. I'm running a 2.66 GHz 4-core Mac Pro on a brand-new APC Back-UPS RS 1500 VA. I also have a 24" LCD, backup hard drives, a cable modem, and a printer (surge only) plugged into the UPS. Despite the extremely hefty specs on the UPS, sometimes when I cold-boot my Mac...

    Apple OS X vs Vista

I guess you're talking about the dictionary here: http://65.181.138.200/images/osx.png Yeah, it's certainly useful. Just press F12 or flick your mouse into an assigned corner and the dictionary (and whatever other widgets you choose) fly onto the screen. It's certainly a lot snazzier and more...

    Appalled with Vista

If a client called you up and said that they had a new Dell sitting in a box waiting to be set up, how would you "prepare" yourself before going over to hook it up, boot it up, install Microsoft Office, and set up an Outlook account? These are quite simple things and I shouldn't have to prepare...

    Appalled with Vista

I tend to be pretty open-minded when it comes to someone's choice of operating system. And I should be, considering that I use Linux, Windows XP x64 and Mac OS X all on a daily basis. I still do some computer consulting on the side, so yesterday I went to a client's office to set up a new...

    New Rig

prodigalrebel is correct. The computer industry undergoes a constant seesaw, with momentum shifting to different companies over a period of years. AMD held a clear lead over Intel for a couple of years. This year, Intel holds the performance crown, and that may last for some time. There is...

    Scientific Workstation (~$10000)

Sun may very well be the way to go for you, since most of their workstations are designed to run on multiple operating systems. If you're going to be running an enterprise Linux distro, I wouldn't have any worries about purchasing any of Sun's workstations.

Test driving an Apple machine without buying one?

Mac OS X is more like FreeBSD (UNIX) than Linux. That said, Macs will also run Windows and Linux natively now (i.e. without an emulator such as VirtualPC), so you're not constrained to OS X if you don't like it. I'm using a quad-core Woodcrest-based Mac Pro right now, and while I have the...

20" widescreen too small? Or go to 22"?

I went from a 19" Samsung CRT to a 20" Apple Cinema Display. While the ACD was in some dimensions smaller than the Samsung (not as tall or deep), the 1680x1050 resolution on the ACD made it feel like I had a lot more real estate. I would say it was a nice upgrade, definitely noticeable, if...

How big was your 1st hard drive...

I had a Mac LC. Two of them, in fact, both with 20 MB hard drives. They still worked fine when I gave them away a couple of years ago. I think my Mac IIsi had a 40 MB hard drive. My Quadra 840A/V had a whopping 1 gigabyte hard drive. In 1993, that was huge.

I'm moving to the dark side....

OS X is six years old, and currently in its fifth incarnation, with a sixth coming out later this year. It is hardly new. It has had plenty of time to mature, and those of us who have been using it since 10.0 have seen it go from being a good OS to a great one. I'm sorry MatLab doesn't work...

I'm moving to the dark side....

Well, now we know who on this forum hasn't actually used a Mac. You obviously don't know what you're talking about. Adobe apps run great on OS X. And Microsoft Office for OS X is superior to its Windows counterpart.

I'm moving to the dark side....

There is nothing wrong with mouse movement on the Macintosh. It is simply set slower by default. If it's an issue, change it in the System Preferences. I just got my MacBook Pro. It is the most elegant beast that I've ever owned.

"Apple rewrites history" ..."Still getting its facts wrong"

I went to CES last week with a friend who works for Intel. He claimed that Yonah could have shipped earlier than it did, but that the timing of the January release was better for Intel's purposes. This may be what the claim on the Apple site is alluding to. Unless someone here has some inside...

Booting into Windows XP from an External FireWire Drive?

Hmmmm. Interesting. Well, the iMac (or any Mac for that matter - Intel included) does not use a BIOS, and all FireWire Macs support booting from an external FireWire drive. I'd like to think that this means I can boot Windows XP from the external FireWire drive. But I guess I really can't be...

Booting into Windows XP from an External FireWire Drive?

I'm about to purchase an iMac Core Duo. However, at the moment, many of the applications that I want to use in OS X aren't available as universal binaries. But I'm currently using a Windows XP box, and I do have Windows versions of these applications. What I'd like to do is have an external...

    are PC faster than Macs?

Obviously "quiet" and "silent" are completely relative. There is no way in hell our recording studio would run Opteron boxes with stock cooling. Every system in this place is water-cooled, whether Macintosh or PC. But the Opterons are on the way out, so I digress.

    are PC faster than Macs?

To each his own. But I doubt that half the people on here who think that PCs "wipe the floor" with Macintosh hardware have actually used Macs extensively. I'm currently using a 2.3 GHz Dual-Core PowerMac G5 with 2.5 GB of RAM in our sound studio. The owner decided that he wanted to go...

Is something wrong with my new Truepower 2.0?

Okay, thanks guys, good to know. One thing I have noticed is that even though it's at 11.8 and not 12.0, it doesn't budge. My old power supply went all over the place.

Is something wrong with my new Truepower 2.0?

I just purchased an Antec TruePower 2.0 480 and installed it into my Antec P180. In both my motherboard BIOS and EVEREST, I'm consistently showing 11.80v on the 12v rail. Is this something to be concerned about? Unfortunately I don't own a multimeter, so I can't check it this way. I'm not...

    my first impression with P180

I received my P180 on Friday. I mostly agree with your impressions. However, having owned two aluminum cases previous to the P180, I would have to disagree that steel is a bad thing. There have been claims in the past that aluminum cases were more prone to sympathetic resonance (i.e...

    Is there an AGP X800XL?

The title sums up my question: are AGP X800XLs out there? I went with a Socket 754 motherboard two months ago because of the incredible bang for the buck on the 3400+. This will be the last AGP card I purchase for personal use, so I would like it to last a while. I'm currently running a 9800...

    SATA using standard windows drivers...

I don't know why the nForce drivers are causing problems for you. However, most newer motherboards now support SATA natively, so there is no need for additional SATA drivers unless you are running a RAID configuration. The last two AMD64 systems I have built have not required SATA drivers...

Some nice Engrish in the GA-K8NXP-SLI manual

I am reminded of Sony's technical support for high-end A/V products during the early 1980s. At the time they were still trying to establish themselves in the professional world and weren't very highly regarded. Whenever you would call them about a problem you were having with some of their...

As a Lebanese-American, I think I know a little more than either of you about the Middle East and Lebanon in particular. Pre-war Lebanon wasn't called the Switzerland of the Middle East for nothing. I guess Switzerland must be a big steaming pile of sh*t too! It can take a considerable...

TTGI...is it a good power supply brand

I don't know much about TTGI as a brand. However, 11.9 or 11.8 volts on the 12V line is excellent. That is *well* within the margin for error allowed by the ATX standard.

For that price, you can't do better than the Tagan for quality or low noise. It's a great power supply, and not just because of the finish. The three year warranty is reassuring, too.

    Is Intel really that bad?

I'm going to give you the benefit of a doubt and assume this isn't a troll. I've built two Intel and three AMD systems for my own personal use. I've never had major compatibility problems with any of them (in other words issues have always been resolved with an updated BIOS or something like...
