    7950 GX2 coming in 2 weeks

I first heard about the 7950 a couple days ago. Sounds like it will be the new king, at a relatively competitive price (for today's standards anyway): (Inquirer article)

Asus releases the first physics card this May

I've been looking forward to this. With Ageia (and now Nvidia/Havok), looks like the pressure will be on software developers to start giving us games that support physics processing. It will be nice when there is enough critical mass to support actual physics-based game features rather than just...

AM2 only delivers 3-5% performance increase

According to the Inquirer (yeah, I know), AM2 cpus running at 2.4GHZ with DDR 2 800 ram are only delivering a 3-5% performance increase: http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=30290 Sounds like DDR 2 is already available at faster speeds though, and DD3 support may not be far off. Still, I'm...

G71 and R580: Where are the Previews?

If the next gen cards are slotted to release this month, why haven't we seen any previews of the cards? In the past, the previews typically come out a few weeks before the cards are available in retail. Are Nvidia and ATI using a different marketing tactic, or are the release dates overly...

    Nvidia vs. ATI Stock

Check out the performance of Nvidia vs. ATI stock over the last three months. It looks like the 7800 has allowed Nvidia to continue on course, while the failure to produce R520 contributed to a 20% drop for ATI. I'm sure there were other factors involved in the plummet for ATI, but it is...

    R520 will be dual slot

Looks like the R520 will be dual slot, which should be interesting in Xfire config. At least yields are looking good and clock speeds could actually exceed 600!

    7800GTX for $499, 7800GT for $399

Looks like prices are already falling on the 7800 series. Not that surprising, given the excellent availability of the card(s), and the upcoming threat of R520. I can see more people being willing to ante up $499 for a 7800GTX, although it is still pricey.

    R520 is 600mhz, 32 pipes

Nothing really new, but it does confirm what we have been hearing about the R520. The card will definitely be faster than G70, but the question is how successful the retaping was, and how soon ATI can launch.
  10. I

    7800GT will be $499

According to VR Zone: So you think it will be worth it to pay the extra $100 for the 7800 GTX? Should be interesting to see how the benchmarks play out.

    Nvidia Claims Performance Crown

Some of you may have seen this info a few days earlier from Xtreme Resources. Looks like ATI's victory with the X850XT PE was pretty short-lived. Nvidia has taken back the crown with a new high in 3DMark05: I wonder if Nvidia will hold onto the trophy longer than ATI managed to do...

Even More News on R520 Delay

Even more news on the delay of the R520. Looks like Nvidia has done the community right by actually having product available when they launched the 7800. ATI will follow suit with the R520. Apparently, the "launch" originally scheduled for end of July was in fact going to be a paper launch...

Don't hold your breath for R520

Looks like the delay is now official. Check this out: If 4Q sales were adjusted down, that means we can't expect the R520 to launch until at least September (which is 1Q for ATI's financial period). The original launch date of July is apparently no longer valid. I'm guessing most gamers...

    Is ATI clutching at straws?

It seems like ATI is trying to hype H.264 in the R520 as a major feature. Personally, I couldn't care less if it has H.264 support or not. I want a faster card that is fully SM3.0 compliant, with nice IQ enhancements like SSAA in the 7800. Is ATI just trying to cover for lack of progress on...

    Bad News for ATI

Sounds like despite great success with the X800XL, ATI is hurting due to lower profit margins on these mid-range cards. I wonder if they will try to jack up the cost of R520 to get back into higher margins?

    Must...Resist...X2 Hype

It seems everyone is in a frenzy about the soon-to-be-released X2s. All of the enthusiasm is contagious, and I keep having to remind myself why I don't think getting an X2 is a great idea for me right now: 1. For the same premium, I can get a much faster single core chip 2. I don't...

    Can games by SLI/Crossfire Optimized?

    Crossfire vs. R520

Speculate. Which do you think will be faster: 1) 2 X800s or 2 X850s in Crossfire 2) R520 Is this going to be like the 6600s, where it is better just to get the top end card than use mid-level cards in dual configuration?

    Why go with SM3.0 today?

Beyond3D has a nice comparison of SM3.0 with SM1.1 here. What I find interesting is that 3.0 is touted as being more efficient. However, if you enable all of its additional features, you end up being unable to render them at an acceptable frame rate with today's technology. So why get SM3.0...

    Venice/SD and 2GB RAM

With the improved memory controller on the Venice/San Diego, we can now run memory at 1T instead of 2T when using more than two sticks. Given that, does it make sense to go with 4x512 for a 2GB configuration, or will the dual GB stick option be better?

No next gen cards until the Fall?

I know you need to take everything published by the Inquirer with a grain of salt, but they have consistently said that R520 was due in June. But now, according to this article, we have to wait until the Fall for the R520 and G70 to be released? I was planning on holding out until June, or...

I'm curious on where -you- draw the line. At what point does your CPU/GPU become slow enough to motivate you to upgrade? Let's talk in terms of what is available today. Personally, I have an Athlon 1800+ and a Radeon 9800 Pro, and I'm not quite there yet. I think I can squeeze out a few more...

Worth it to update ATI drivers?

I have a 9800 pro, and haven't updated my ATI drivers for over a year. I just checked the ATI site, and they recommend not updating unless you are currently having issues.
