What to do with T61 parts?

I did a quick search of those forums, but haven't found anything yet. After my account is activated, I might try posting a question. The main issue for me is price - if they have to replace the motherboard, it is going to be prohibitively expensive. I've seen some replacement motherboards on...

What to do with T61 parts?

I actually haven't actually torn the whole think apart yet, but I don't think Lenovo solders the CPU to the motherboard - when I called about repairs, they said that I'd need to replace the mobo, but didn't mention replacing the CPU. It wouldn't make a ton of sense from their perspective - it...

What to do with T61 parts?

So last week I woke up to find out that my Lenovo T61 had bitten the dust. The video card, which is soldered to the motherboard, had died, and they wanted $600 to replace it (damn thing just went off of warranty 2 months ago). Naturally i figured i'd just buy a new laptop for that price, so I...

    Anyone have a Vostro?

from what i've heard they are pretty much the same as their equivalents in the dimension/inspiron lines. They don't have crapware, which is nice. They look much more businesslike, which IMHO is a good thing, and i've heard the build quality is better, at least in their notebook line, although...

    Laptop - which brand?

Personally I wouldn't advise it, for several reasons: 1) It is awfully heavy for a 15" laptop - 1.7" is pretty thick! 2) desktop replacement laptops generally require a huge power brick (like my old HP) which adds like another 2lbs to your carrying weight. 2) I've never heard of the brand...

    Laptop - which brand?

yeah the performance is decent but the driver support is pretty bad. I think the newest lenovo drivers are 101.45, which is really old. My standards aren't that high on a laptop though - i just want to play Civ 4, C&C 3, etc. which run very well. And my laptop doesn't weigh like 500 lbs like...

    Laptop - which brand?

I just got a Lenovo Thinkpad t61 and I have to say I'm really impressed with it so far. They are having lots of sales on these things right now, so they aren't as expensive as they used to be - I got a pretty nice 14.1" widescreen one with a T7300 and quadro NVS 140M for under $1000 (of course...

    Questions before buying a laptop

I just bought lenovo t61 the other day (they are priced really nice right now with the 10% off coupon from *****). I went with the T7300 because I wanted the 4MB cache, but i figured the T7500 and T7700 simply weren't worth the money (the performance gains are only 10 or 20 %, respectively)...

Intel planning a penryn Price drop?

i doubt there will be a price drop, but I imagine that you'd be best served by waiting for penryn. I've heard the q6600s are pretty limited in their overclocking potential (many top out around 3GHz) simply due to too much heat generated by 4 65nm cores. at 45nm, I'd imagine that heat would be...

    HD video encoding

thanks for the input - i am considering getting a quad-core CPU, but I'm going to try and wait for penryn and grab one of those - i imagine at 45nm there should be some serious overclocking potential without too much heat, plus it will have larger cache and SSE4 which should help with the video...

    HD video encoding

I am currently ripping my HD-DVD collection to WMV pro in 720p, and throwing them all on a huge external hard drive to play on my xbox 360. It is a complicated process, but I finally have the ripping, demuxing, audio splitting etc. down. When I am done I feed the VC-1 or AVC video to Windows...

Transcoding to the 360 with 5.1 audio solution

you can try eac3to, it takes ac3 and ddp files and converts them into 6 mono wav files. Then you can enter "multichannel wav source" in windows media encoder and add each one manually. It's kind of a pain, but its the method I have to use to get my HD-DVD encodes to play on the xbox 360.

    L2 Cache 2mb vs 4mb

I've heard that 1MB chips suffer a huge performance hit relative to the 2MB chips - as much as 15% or more in games. 2MB versus 4MB, on the other hand, is only around 1-2% in most apps, sometimes as high as 5%. It seems that Intel chips generally have a bottleneck point relative to L2 cache...

    Barcelona runs at 3.0 ghz

i'm glad for them, this at least means they aren't totally F@#Ked, but no doubt this is an extremely cherrypicked CPU. they still have a lot of ground to make up though - Penryn has been demonstrated at 3.33GHz, and some of the better QX6850s seem to be capable of 3.75GHz or more. One thing...

    pc8000 and a 1333mhz frontside bus?

it'll work just fine - in fact, the memory will actually be running faster than the bus. 1333MHz FSB is really a 333MHz quad-pumped. when running in 1:1, each channel gets half the bandwidth, so each stick will run at 667MHz. You would have to run a 3:2 divider or just overclock your FSB (and...

    e6750 with a P965 possible?

I'd try it and just see what happens - if it doesn't support 1333MHz FSB officially, it might boot up at a FSB of 266MHz, and then you can just manually change the FSB to 333MHz. Worst case scenario it won't boot and then you can go buy a new mobo.

    SSE4 support

i think they called it SSSE3 because they didn't actually introduce any new instructions, they just made it so that some of the more complex SSE instructions could be executed in a single clock cycle instead of two. I definitely remember some early articles saying that Conroe had SSE4 though...

List of 1080p games for 360

yeah i kinda doubt there will be many 1080p games. after all, consider what that actually is - 1920x1080 with AA. How many PCs can do that? the 360 only has what is basically an x1900 in it, which couldn't handle very many games at that resolution in a PC. the purpose of 1080p on the PS3 and...

    Intel Quad VS AMD Phenom

I really hope AMD gets competitive soon, because we all know how lazy intel can get when AMD isn't breathing down its neck. Unfortunately, the more I look at the numbers, I really just don't see it happening, at least short term. Right now, K8 is 20% slower clock-for-clock than Conroe. From...

What's the point of 1333 fsb?

i imagine that apps that truly use all 4 cores would benefit substantially from the faster bus. Since each pair of cores needs to communicate over the FSB, which is rather inefficient, the faster FSB speeds should help minimize the problems associated with this approach. But in general, they...

__________IC Diamond 7... Anyone used it yet?__________

I can't completely quantify my results, because when I applied the IC diamond, since i moved some fans around in order to get better airflow, but between the thermal paste and rearranging the fans I got a drop in load temps of over 10C. Before, I was getting load temps of just over 60C @...

    Apple plans cheaper, Nano-based phone

this doesn't really sound very impressive to me - considering the iPhone already has the storage capacity of a nano as it is, I can only imagine what they are gonna have to cut in order to cut the price in half - it probably won't be an even remotely "smart" phone, but rather just a very pretty...

Overclock my brand new macbook pro??

what exactly are you planning to overclock? The CPU is at 2.4GHz, which is the rated speed for that chip. I doubt you will be able to overclock it much higher than that in such a thin laptop without generating unhealthy amounts of heat - it's not like there is a tuniq tower cooler inside or...

    Blu-Ray versus HD-DVD (old)

mcturkey, i agree with your general idea, since most people simply don't have enough internet bandwidth to download HD content at the present time. However, I think you're very much overestimating the size of video files. If you are using antiquated MPEG-2, yeah it would take a ton of space...

    Blu-Ray versus HD-DVD (old)

Rio, by "win", I mean the movie studios coming to the agreement that one format is the way of the future, and giving up on the other format. In the long run, the market will not support 2 incompatible formats - it didn't work back in the VCR v. Betamax days, and it won't work now. It's...

    Blu-Ray versus HD-DVD (old)

to be honest, it really doesn't matter what sales on one format versus the other are right now. As much as I'd like the format war to simply be over, no side is going to cave while so much of the market is untapped. What is the market penetration of HDTV right now? like 10% of homes or less...

    creating hi-def wmv files

to be honest, i wouldn't bother upscaling. You're basically just adding size to your file without any real increase in quality. also, as i recently found out, the 360 puts artificial limits on file size for mp4/AVC files (4GB), and while you can stream large WMV files, it is very hard to do...

the Blu Ray Association announces that the BD+ spec is ready

is it just me or does that seem like this is exactly the opposite of what they need to be doing to win the format war? After all, it seems like neither HD-DVD nor Blu-ray is making any significant impact on the market right now. It isn't cost effective for people to burn HD movies right now...

    Blu-Ray versus HD-DVD (old)

this is kinda pissing me off, i just bought the xbox 360 HD-DVD drive... oh well, at least i can still get HD-DVDs through blockbuster's online program. I'm really pretty surprised, considering HD-DVD drives are only like $200 compared to $400 for a blu-ray player. maybe in a few months...

    Htpc Audio Card suggestions

i think most of intel's ICH9 boards have the new ALC888 or ALC889 integrated audio, which include dolby digital live (i think). but if you are using old parts, i have heard good things about the chaintech board. just steer clear of the x-fi - its expensive and doesn't include DDL, or even...

    DDR-667 or DDR-800 RAM ?

how much is the value ram? I've seen 2GB DDR2-800 kits for well under $100, and I even saw some DDR2-1000 from crucial for $105 after rebate, which is simply ridiculously cheap compared to a few months ago. Personally I'd grab at least DDR2-800, just in case you get a great overclocking e4300...

Will NVidia 8800 refresh bring PureVideo HD to the high end cards?

i can almost guarantee nvidia's refresh will have it. it seems to be how it always works for them - they release their high-end cards first; after that, they decide on some great new bit of hardware acceleration, and it is included on their midrange cards. Then all cards of the next generation...

About to buy a TV that only has HDMI inputs

yeah, if you look online, the TV does in fact have some basic audio inputs, so you can just plug in your standard L/R adaptor to the TV if you want. Since I'm sure the TV only has stereo speakers on it, you really don't need anything more fancy than basic L/R if you want to use the integrated...

    Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD

I'm guessing HD-DVD will win for 3 reasons: 1) Price - it looks like HD-DVD is really pulling ahead on pricing, and this looks to continue - i read somewhere that Walmart just agreed to buy a crapload of HD-DVD players from either Toshiba or LG for under $150, and given Walmart's low profit...

i just thought of this, but i noticed you tried playing with memory timings, but didn't mention underclocking your memory. maybe you should try dropping your base memory speed to 333MHz (5/6 multiplier) or 300 (3/4 multi) which should allow for more flexibility in OCing if your memory isn't...

    DVR on a PC

i thought about buying a MCE box but decided it would just be easier to rent the time warner box. If you have HDTV and/or digital cable, the TV tuners are expensive and you have a very limited selection. If not, you're probably still looking at $150-200 for the hard drive and tuner card...

personally i wouldn't spend a bunch of money on a total replacement right now, seeing as how new generation hardware (barcelona, penrynn) is on the horizon and we have know idea which will win and how they will overclock. Besides, I'm not really convinced that an 8600GTS will even bottleneck...
