So which route would you have gone?
System needed to be:
1. Low Cost
2. "Low" Power Consumption
3. Able to be hooked to an LCD TV for the purpose of streaming and playing movies only.
4. Decent amount of storage for file server for the whole family (family of 5).
If you want a small P&S with some "decent" quality, I would say the Canon S95 like most here, but if you don't need the improvements, the Canon S90 Refurbished are going for under $300 nowadays.
The NEX-3 I think gets a little too big. I might as well carry a small digital SLR like the Canon T2i.
I used to own both the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 non-VC and the Canon 50 f/1.8.
I say that it is good to own both, using the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 as your everyday walk around lens, and taking out the 50 1.8 when needed for low light photography or when you want shallow depth of field.
