I just did my first restore from WHS 1.1 yesterday. It did work on my 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium, quad core modern machine, but it was definitely more of a hassle than it should have been. It seems like most people have problems with restoring because of Realtek driver issues. The funny...
Gotta love the economy shipping. Mine has been sitting about 120 miles away for 4 days. I guess UPS Innovations likes to age things for a while before delivery. That way, you know you're getting vintage goods.
I'm intimately aware of Antec cases and video card clearance having recently taken a pair of tin shears to the drive cage of my Antec Solo to fit a Radeon 6950 :D
A couple of other points. I upgraded my 530 to 64 bit Windows 7 recently. It's been running great. However, memory remapping is not an option in the BIOS, so there's no point in having a lot of RAM in there. I have 3 GB in mine.
I have an Inspiron 530 that I bought new a couple of years ago. It has a PCIE slot (presumably x16) and two PCI slots. I have an 8800GT in mine. I had to upgrade the power supply when I added the card.
Actually, I just checked, it also has a PCIE x1 slot.
My WHS has 2 GB of RAM and a dual core 1.6 Ghz Celeron and does fine. This would do well as a WHS with some storage.
The form factor is small, but you can mount another hard drive below the one that's there and another one in the empty optical drive bay. There should be two free SATA ports...
Costco did have a deal for $130, but it sold out very pretty quickly. I also believe it was for delivery only. I was nervous about trying to get the family pack because some places stopped offering them and I thought I read that MS was going to just have this available near the Windows 7...
I believe so. The installer won't ask for a Windows disc, it just detects the existing OS and will perform a clean install if you have XP. The installer warns you to back up your stuff before proceeding.
I was just at my local Sam's Club and picked up the Windows 7 Home Premium Family Pack which includes both 32-bit and 64-bit discs for $124.46 plus tax. I checked online before I went there and Sam's website said they had none in stock at my local store. This is the best price I've seen yet...
There are one or two 22 inch LCDs with 1920 x 1200 resolution, one of which is the Lenovo L220X. But yes, in general he would need to get a 24" LCD for 1920 x 1200.
"Not a good deal compared to the ASUS EEE, or the Lenovo if you can find it."
The cheap EEEs all have the "Intel Mobile CPU" vs the Atom in the Dell. All the EEEs I can find with Atoms cost over $500.
Currently at Newegg, the lowest 4870 price after rebate is $255 (Asus). The lowest GTX260 price after rebate is $245 (MSI).
(It's actually a $20 price difference since they charge ~$10 for shipping the Asus, but the MSI shipping is free).
I bought my first ATI card in many years, the Visiontek 4870. Performance has been great and I have had zero issues. I don't know what all the fuss is about temperatures, I just play my games. I do hear the fan speed up occasionally, but it's not that loud.
Reading this thread reminded me that BB sent me a 12% off coupon good until the end of July. It's only 12% off, but they have the 4780 in stock at my local store. Hmmmm.... what to do.
Just got my new 10/12% coupon in the mail from Best Buy and they have the 8800GT in stock at my local BB... but sadly, I can't use the coupon until the 16th.
I have a Dell Vostro 1500 and had the 160 Gb 5400 drive. I also see a major speed-up with this drive. I was able to clone my old drive but I didn't actually get around to trying MediaDirect yet.
This deal was on Fat Wallet weeks ago. I'm thinking the Best Buy couldn't possibly have any of these left. The Madison west side store only had serial numbers starting with WGH. At lunch I took a drive over to the east side store and they had two DTG serial number packages. Score! I opened...
