I had a 2500k @ 4.4ghz for 6 years and it was a beast. By far the best cpu I have had, rock solid and soaked up most games. I just updated my gpu's!! I am not exaggerating when I say I could count the amount of crashes on one hand in 6 years.
I've now gone to a 8700k - but that was not an easy...
Thanks for all the comments. No matter which way I slice it - I keep coming back to the evo. It just seems to be the sweet spot of overall performance and price i.e. no real weak areas and cost is not the lowest or highest.
It's the 850 or go 960 NVMe but the cost is a bit of a step up and I'll...
So I was set on getting a new 500gb m.2 drive for my 8700k build and the Samsung 850 evo seemed like the winner. But I spotted the Intel 600p at only about £20 more - not much but I don't want to spend the cash and then not get any benefit.
I know one is SATA and the other NVMe but in the real...
I am running the MSI Intel Z370 TOMAHAWK. https://www.scan.co.uk/products/msi-z370-tomahawk-intel-z370-s-1151-ddr4-sata3-dual-m2-2-way-crossfire-intel-gbe-usb-31-gen2-aplusc
So finally received my 8700K yesterday and fired it up. First impressions are that these things are beasts - I was coming from my old faithful 2500k - so view my enthusiasm with that in mind!!
I had a couple of "do'h" moments - a build wouldn't be fun with out them! Had msconfig set to 6...
Anyone got any experience/thoughts on the MSI Intel Z370 TOMAHAWK?
I am looking to pair it with the 8700k with some mild OC'ing. Plus, I want one usb c type connector (future proof a bit) and have 4 pin system fan connectors to set variable speeds on my system fans.
Ouch! Thanks for the replies.. slow initialisation is what the supplier has also said. Shame really as I really wanted it to be blistering. We are going to run some 'real world use cases' (dev builds etc) to see how much better it is up and running.
I have two identical machines apart from storage, so:
mobo - Asus 170i pro gaming
cpu - i7 6700k
ram - 32gb dd4
gpu - none.
Booting both machines into the same build of Fedora (push button to login screen):
SSD - Samsung SM951 PCIe - 55s
SSD - Samsung 850 EVO SATA - 25s
Why the...
So I have decided to go for an UW instead of triple monitors... I think I will hang out for the AOC u3477pqu. I am going to upgrade my dual gtx 295 sli config - getting too noisy and a bit choppy in places.
I mainly MMO - Wildstar/ArcheAge currently.
Is a gtx 970 going to be enough grunt...
@exar333 - do you not find it has less peripheral vision? looking at youtube demos of games in 34 UW v 3x 24"s it doesn't show as much... or does that not really make much diff as the 34 is so wide?
mmmm... decisions decisions..
I am not too concerned over bezels as I was expecting them and I think thin bezel monitors properly positioned with correction on it will be fine. I do understand a single screen would be easier on the gpu...
Wish there was somewhere I could try both!!!
Well I was just about to pull the trigger on a new gpu and 3 screens when I saw this:
AOC u3477Pqu @ £499 inc vat.
Obviously 3x 24inch is going to be bigger but is one monster 34 inch UW going to be less hassle??
Purely for gaming.
I have 2x 295gtx's 9so quad sli) sitting on i5-2500k @4.5ghz, 8gb ram, ssd etc I fancy upgrading the gpu as when they get blowing they are LOUD!
Any recommendations? If I am spending cash I obviously want a performance improvement (and noise reduction!!) but avoiding my cpu being the bottle...
I have a 55" Samsung TV that I watch a lot of 3D on and I am one of the (few) people who love it. Given the choice I'll watch a film in 3D over 2D, plus, I love watching football on it in 3D. So I do "get" the effect :) it's more like looking into a box of objects rather than the objects popping...
Thanks for the advice guys. I am very much leaning towards a triple 2D set up. A couple of reasons why - I play mmo's 98% of the time, they are notoriously bad at 3D but even if they were done well I really want the triple screen set up for PV, immersion and extra info ie for pvp awareness...
So the dream crusher (wife) has agreed that I can upgrade to a triple screen set up (currently running a single 24"). Would it be worth going 3x 3D screens? Or will the peripheral screens simply not look 3D as I am going to mainly stare at the middle screen?
I am thinking 3x 24" regardless of...
The problem with that is the sound card then has the audio out, I need an spdif onboard output to my gpu. So the gpu sends the audio via the hdmi cable. I have an external audio out on my mobo but that is obviously seperate to the hdmi.
So the TV plays the image and no sound. I need the sound...
I currently have an Asus P5N-T Deluxe mobo running an Intel E8400 @ 3.4ghz. I like the board apart from one feature, no onboard spdif output.
What this means is I can't run audio from my gpu via the hdmi output to the TV for 3D. It's a royal pain.
So, I need suggestions for a replacement...
my 9800xg2 has gone pop so I need to replace it. With a £300 budget what would people go for.. 260 sli or 4870x2? I have a 780i mobo so can not xfire only sli. Or maybe a 285???
Nice looking hs.
I have the thermalright IFX-14 which is even bigger than that bad boy.. check out spec
110 x 110 x 150 mm
v
146.2 x 124 x 161 mm
It's huge.. can barely see my mobo with it on!! ;)
Cheers for the info Billb2.
One last Q.. what is in the top of the pipe attached to the T?
My system is fine actually.. not even getting close to risky temperatures (that is mainly due to the mobo - but that is a whole new thread) but I just like the idea of having a crack at...
I am considering a watercooled set up but have a couple of questions...
How loud are these things? I understand that a lot depends on the fans and would love to use the Noctua NF-S12 1200 RPM fans as they are super quiet but will they have the cfm to do the job?
How loud are the pumps? I...
I have a noctua 1200 rpm 17db fan sitting in my Thermalright and it does fit into the mobo 4 pin connector and report rpm.
It's a sweet fan. I can not hear it at all and it moves huge amounts of air.
I think you need to take another look to make it fit, I haven't used a better fan in all...
I would measure your exact height restrictions as 125mm is pretty roomy. Only a few heat /fans wont fit in there.
Then take a look here:
http://www.tomshardware.com/re...-charts-2008,1779.html
I went for the Thermalright and it's a beast.. but I don't think it will fit in your machine.
My E8400 running at 3.45ghz in an Antec 900 with a Thermalright IFX-14 and 120mm Noctua NF-S12 sits at about 32c-34c idle. Under load for 18 hours was at 48c. (not lapped - running AC5)
This is with all case fans set at low.
The fan in the heat sink is super quiet (think 17db) and the case...
Can anyone recommend a UK supplier of equipment to make up cables?
Specifically I want to make a 4-pin to 3-pin connector for a fan. I can find loads of molex connector changing kits but none have the cable and metal pins I require.
I fancy putting in a fan controller in my 900. Has anyone modified the original fans to work with a controller? if so how etc.
I know I can put otehr fans in but I like the originals.
So you are saying it won't oc on stock volts.
Well.. errr.. try changing them?!?! Or am I missing something.
Do you mean you are set on auto and it won't oc? I don't have the p5b but a p5n-t deluxe and auto was not good for oc'ing.
Set it to auto and standard settings.. check the volts...
Here is how I understand it - linked will alow your mem to creep up when you OC. So your mem will OC too. Unlinked is obviously the opposite.
If you don't want to OC your mem you need to work out what you want to run it at. 1066mhz is 2x 533mhz (2 sticks of mem). So if you fsb was 533 you run...
