Monster cyclone about to hit Australia

It's too late to move to shelters, the advice is to stay where you are and go to the strongest part of the house. 61,000 homes already without power, 2 hours until landfall. Scary to watch this developing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcz8DDaRjkc Emergency shelters include underground...

Monster cyclone about to hit Australia

This looks very frightening, Cyclone Yasi is packing winds of 180mph, 30mph faster than Katrina, seas 20 feet higher than high tide. It's expected to cross the coast in 3 hours. Radar: http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDR192.loop.shtml This is the same state to have massive floods just a few...

The Wikileaks dessemination megathread (Cablegate and beyond)

BoA is now not allowing any transactions to support Wikileaks. Companies too big to fail, and unethical behaviour too big to uncover. I'm happy that people have been given the opportunity to leak information to hold our governments and companies to account. They obviously feel very threatened...

Those crazy Brits are at it again...Bacon Smell from Deli offends Muslims

Agreed, nothing in the article mentions the Muslim is a foreigner, and the position of the fan seems poor. I would have complained also if I gagged at those smells.

    Wikileaks, Iraq edition

It's good to have all this out in the open. As the Pentagon call this "essentially snapshots of events, both tragic and mundane, and do not tell the whole story", would they be able to tell us the whole story?

    Official World Cup Soccer Thread

That did look like an unintentional ankle-tap actually. As the Chilean's knee went past the Spanish ankle, he stumbled slightly, while the Spanish guy obviously got his legs crossed over and thus fell.

    Australian PM ousted.

Even a week is a long time in politics. I think the voters gave him a spanking for not staying the course on the emissions trading scheme, even when the going got tough.

Peggy Noonan Writes Obama Is Incompetent

So you're arguing that the oil spill is an example of Marxism/neo-Marxism? :\ I believe you need to take a step back into reality. Only then may you be able to contribute to debate.

Oil spill + November defeat = an end to Obama's presidency from a political POV??

I think the response has been very good. I'm not sure what more Obama could have done, and to take it on the chin like he has is admirable, but not the reality of the circumstances. I think the American people are just disgruntled with most things in general, and are enjoying blaming all and...

    Australia, 2050 after climate devastation!

These are pretty out-there ideas, but I think that is the point; not to limit the possibilities about the future. Australia is the driest inhabited continent on the planet, so forces impacting on its development are unique. A small change in its climate is going to be significant in impact. I...

YA(EITS thread derailed)T: just delete it

I can't believe there are so many posts and no one has mentioned a travel clinic, which you can find a list of at the centers for disease control and prevention website: http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/content/travel-clinics.aspx

    Very cool bike

I ride about 80 m/week, but this thing still interests me. Often you can't take a bicycle on a train, definately not a bus. Try riding 5 miles to a meeting and still look presentable.

    Very cool bike

Very expensive, but it'll have its market where this cost is justified. Look at the videos, it appears very stable and safe. Segway? Now you're being rediculous.

    Very cool bike

The Yikebike http://www.yikebike.com/site/gallery/video/yikebike-discovery-channel The Yikebike goes 12mph, battery lasts for roughly 6 miles, recharges in 30 minutes, weighs about 20 lb. ABS on a bike! Cost is about $4,500. Quite the awesome package.

Car shopping, what else should I look at?

Certainly Mr 16,001 poster. Ahahaha. And there goes the US again with its own wacky unit of measurement. Back on topic, have a look at the 2009 World Car of the Year. Hang on, the international engine and green engine of the year isn't available in the US. Alright, how about one of the...

Car shopping, what else should I look at?

I find it laughable to call 91 octane premium, that should be standard. 95-98 octane is premium. Refiners in the US get away with poor standards.

The single most important vote you have

I preach what you talk of; I buy as much as I can from local/independent retailers, always buy my green groceries from growers markets, so hopefully my money doesn't end up with those who already have plenty of it or with those that I know have unethical business practices. I hate to be...

The single most important vote you have

It's because capitalism doesn't take into account these social factors that we have such problems. Big business has a big voice in being able to quash ideas about what would be good for our society, all in the name of profit.

The single most important vote you have

But shouldn't we buy stuff from businesses who pay workers poorly, rape and pillage the land and its resources so we can save a few dollars to buy more stuff? I thought that was how capitalism works, capitalise on the misfortune of others.

    Australia raises official interest rates

In June they were still predicting recession. In fact, the lowest they got was 0.3% growth. Interesting to see a few people saying the OECD were being optimistic, when in fact, in hindsight, they were pessimistic!

    Australia raises official interest rates

There are many things that you can glean from this. Firstly, they were the only advanced OECD nation to avoid recession. Second, their economy was red-hot at the start of the financial crisis, with interest rates at 7.25% in August 2008, they were able to significantly de-leverage the market...

    Mother Rapes Son

I really hope this child doesn't get named by anyone. It's amazing that this woman was named, it is probably now quite easy to find out the childs name, or others that know the woman or the child can put 2 and 2 together, word may spread. So I don't see how naming and having a photo of this...

Has sound insulation gotten any better with the econocars?

Well my 07 Fit roadnoise at high speed I'd rate as good. (on a scale of poor/fair/good/excellent). It is better than the CR-V, which has tire-roar. According to overseas reviews of small car smoothness/quietness (out of 10): Mazda2 8 Honda Jazz 7 Hyundai Getz 5 Mitsubishi Colt 5 Toyota...
