What to do with cheap dual Xeon 32GB RAM?

Can you think of anything to use these for? I have five of these systems on ebay for dirt cheap but since I have zero bids maybe they are not useful anymore? It seems like at least 32GB ram could be good for caching or something? Dual XEON X5492 3.4GHz, 12MB cache, 1600 MHz FSB 32GB...

    Crucial M4 Not Fast Enough

Finally made the jump to SSD from a mechanical hard drive. Yes, it's much faster but I still wait on it quite a bit. Starting up Win7 within VMWare Fusion takes 27 seconds. Wth? I don't know if there is some configuration I'm missing, this is after Fusion is already running and I...

    Any Sandforce problems on Mac?

Has anyone heard of the Sandforce 2xxx nightmare being a problem on Macs? I don't seem to hear about as many problems there, not sure if the reason is: 1) There are less Macs out there so you hear less reports 2) It actually has less problems since there were fewer...

    Need "Flow" SSD Benchmarks

I think we need more SSD benchmarks that measure time to execute real life tasks. When starting and stopping tasks throughout the day, it's too easy to get your "flow" broken by waiting on IO. These are things people do pretty frequently (at least some dev people) but there are no benchmarks...

Do all SSDs have the same performance (practically)?

Has anyone ever experienced a difference in speeds in real life usage between two different SSDs? File copy performance I can see being different, but all this random IOPs stuff - has anyone really noticed a difference outside of a benchmark?

Would YOU Like to Moderate This Forum?

I would consider joining the volunteer list if we could carve out an SSD forum. I'm sure this has come up before, but memory and storage are just too much for one topic on an enthusiast site. Beyond this, it would be paradise to separate Mechanical from Solid State drives. Of course...

Can any SSD update its firmware on a Mac?

I'm seeing a lot of SSDs that can be used in Macs (OSX), but require a Windows machine to update firmware. WTH? For example I've heard none of the new Sandforce drives (like Vertex3) can be updated. I actually have mostly Windows systems, but I don't want to buy an SSD for my Mac that...

Sandy Bridge vs. NVidia: Video transcoding

Actually Jim it's comparing to the relatively new New Fermi 460 GPU. Even if it comes out a tie power required to encode will likely decrease dramatically. Being that Sandy Bridge is only a 95w part and does not require any GPU to encode at this speed. regards-

Sandy Bridge vs. NVidia: Video transcoding

I scraped together the numbers from today's Sandy Bridge demo and Badaboom and tried to compare apples to apples as much as possible at this point: http://lee.hdgreetings.com/2010/09/intel-cpu-vs-nvidia-gpu-video-transcoding.html Is this bad for NVidia?

Is this the smallest case for 5850 GPU?

Is the smallest volume case in the world fitting the AMD 5850 GPU the "Da Box"? (http://www.lan-gear.com/products.php) Or does anything else come close? LTG

ATI Ultra-Realistic Realtime Ruby Tessellation demo

Wrong. Not only could DX10 do this, DX9 could also. It's doing it really fast, but that's mostly because the card has a lot of raw horsepower. Here is an example of real time ray tracing using Adobe's version of a pixel shader on top of opengl, which is really not different from a...

Intel gen 1 80GB SSD vs Samsung gen 5 SSD

Btw, if the enterprise version of the Intel drive comes as close to it's specs as the Intel consumer drive does, they will totally open a can of whoopass on the samsung enterprise drives.

Intel gen 1 80GB SSD vs Samsung gen 5 SSD

JVNK, the first graph is misleading because they don't use the same scale. The intel drive overall beats the samsung drive.

    Are Intel SSD Drives Vaporware?

Latest Core i7 release date info

Is the latest best guess info really November? A while back Digitimes wrote about how they were moving up the dates with Core i7 available by end of Sept. and Boards released asap after that. Usually it seems there are better date leaks by now :).

    HD Encoding/Transcoding with HD 4800

There was also an article at Tom's that said they saw a demo of Cyberlink GPU accelerated encoding on the 4800 series. However I won't believe it until someone here posts because as someone mentioned ATI directly lied about hardware supported transcoding before. Even the software encoder...

    Hardware Video Acceleration Power Measurement

Thanks that is very interesting - I wonder how the 1200*800 could take the same utilization as the 1080 which is double the pixels? The gpu must be making a big difference though if you're at 50% CPU with a 3800+ and another guy was at 90%+ with an AMD 6000 CPU.

    Hardware Video Acceleration Power Measurement

Ewiz.com has changed name to NewBiiz.com?

After thinking about this more, this can't be good. I posted on their blog to ask for clarification. A company rarely acquires another company with a great reputation and then gets rid of it's name and domain. When you buy a long standing company a lot of what your paying for is...

    Difference between G92 and G94?

Supposedly the 9600GT is based on the "G94" architecture. Anyone know how this compares to the 8800GT G92 architecture?
  26. L

    SOLVED: 8600GT or 7900GT

The 8600GT is just not worth it at this point, even if you are on a budget. For todays games it's a slow card, and very little more you'll get far better performance. If you can wait the 9600 may worth saving up for and comes out in March.
  27. L

    Any 9600 Benchmarks leaked yet?

Anyone heard any info on these two questions? I really need a new card with the massive memory bandwidth of SLI/Crossfire, but don't want to go 3870 until getting info on the GX2 and 9600. Will the 9600 is SLI be faster or use less power than the GX2?

    Anyway to test Video RAM?

There's nothing like memtest+ for video card vram. Even with the utilities that do exist nothing will be easier or more conclusive than swapping it out temporarily. Of course that's easier if like most of us you have a few PCs that can help provide the parts to test with.

Do you have to hate gays to be Republican?

Please do not take this as a troll thread and do take it seriously. Think about it: The majority of people in one of America's dominant political parties consider a massive group of everyday people to be amoral or sinners. If this were fringe politics I could care less, but this includes...

Do you have to hate gays to be Republican?

Loki that's fascinating. Does it not bother you that such a large percentage of the group considers your lifestyle amoral? I guess you may look at it like my mother looks at the Catholic church - she supports equal rights for gay people but she's not leaving the church because they don't agree.

Do you have to hate gays to be Republican?

Or do you just have to be for changing the constituion to ban gay marriage? For me it's hard to believe current presidential candidates support changing the charter of our country to prevent something that doesn't hurt anyone. I support a lot of republican values - low taxes, a strong...

    GeForce 9800 GX2

I have a feeling anyone buying the 3870x2 is going to have some regrets when this card comes out. Let's face it, if you're willing to spend $450 on ATI's X2 with super noise, why not get super noise from the 9800 GX2 and be much faster, for probably not much more cash.

    Rumors: Ageia bought out

It's not going to happen. Neither Intel or NVidia will acquire them. Their hardware is totally dead. Their only hope is to establish their SDK interface as a neutral standard for engines, where programmers could write to it but it would be powered by NVidia/ATI/ or CPU cores.

512bit memory bus vs 256 memory bus

I would forget the 2900, the larger memory bus won't do you any good. That's because the pixel processing power of the GPU itself is not likely to be able to keep up with your demands to the point where you benefit from it. You can see the different memory bandwidth makes on the 8800GT vs...
