    Help with Network Media

Hi, I'm trying to figure out a possible setup for a comprehensive way to stream my media. Ideally, this includes my local media, Netflix, Rhapsody, and other sites such as Hulu. Currently, my hardware setup is a Win XP based system, a DLink DNS-323 NAS, and a modded Xbox with XBMC. What I'd...

How to have a "software" keyboard when installing XP

I still don't know what the problem was, but I had to unplug the comp to let the battery die, the power button wouldn't let me reboot. Anyway, I did a repair install, then a full install and it seems to be up and running. Hopefully I won't have this issue popping up randomly.

How to have a "software" keyboard when installing XP

edit: anyway, I'd like to at least get win xp installed and then troubleshoot. Since I have a working mouse is there a way to click to type when installing? I need to input the cd key etc.

How to have a "software" keyboard when installing XP

The keyboard does work, I used it to navigate the bios. Also, the touchmouse pad was working before I did the HD wipe. I'm not really sure whats going on, 'cause it was working fine. This came out of the blue.

How to have a "software" keyboard when installing XP

My laptop recently has been freezing up after booting, and the only way to get it to respond would be to let the battery run down to the point that XP makes a pop up telling me to switch power sources. At that point, the system becomes functional. So, I decided to wipe everything and do a...

Any good alternatives to Windows Media Player

I like foobar, I don't use many features in it but it's got a tiny footprint so it's good for overall system performance.

Uh oh, 70 C cpu temp on first boot?

Never mind that last edit. I'm watching it in the bios. Temp is now a cool 25 C which is when the fan starts to kick in. I still can't say I'm at all impressed with the stock heatsink installation, but whatever, as long as its working.

Uh oh, 70 C cpu temp on first boot?

grr, i'm next to sure that's what it is.... because no, after I cleaned it i put it in while the MB was installed. Also, I forgot to mention. My mobo has plugs for a system and power fan, but as far as I know nothing I have plugs into them. I have a p180 case and gigabyte ds3. I have...

Uh oh, 70 C cpu temp on first boot?

well, i've got a problem. I cleaned it off, and put a small line down the middle like artics website describes. I did my first boot into the bios and it's showing a temp of 70 C. What gives? Do I need more compound, or maybe the heatsink isn't contacting well? I did have issues...

Uh oh, 70 C cpu temp on first boot?

Edit: I cleaned it, but it's running really hot. Check out my post a few down... I applied way too much artic silver 5 to my heatsink and now have to clean it off after it's already been installed. I checked artics website (the instructions there let me know I did it wrong..) and they...

    Core2Duo E4300/E4400/E6320/E6420/E6600 deals @ MWAVE.com

I'd say at the moment mwave is a bit better deal for the 4300. It's $5 cheaper after shipping than newegg, AND its 2 day air, rather than 3 day at newegg. Anyway, its where I ordered mine and it's been processed. Should be at my door Wed I hope.

Supreme Commander Uses *all* 4 Cores

It's already been said, but developers aren't coding for what the majority of people are currently running. They're coding for the future man.... the FUTURE! When you're making a game with as much money invested as developers do, you don't want your product to be outdated within 6 months...

    Building a computer, first time

You'll want to figure out how large of a monitor you want to get, as this will affect your choice of video card. If the monitor is very large, running games at the naitive resolution can require a better card than you might think. As for DX10 vs DX9; since you stated you're not too concerned...

    Building a computer, first time

I've been out of the computer loop for about 5 years, which is pretty much the same thing as never having built a computer. You've certainly found the right site to learn about the parts so you can start making you own decisions on which parts to get. Use the reviews to learn the basics...

System build - good cpu/mobo choice for overclock?

If that's refering to me using an IDE hard drive, what I mean is the drive I currently own. A sata hard drive is top on the list to buy after I get the main system up and running. Just don't have the money to buy all at once. (or at least thats a possibility, it's just close to having to...

System build - good cpu/mobo choice for overclock?

Good advice all, thanks! As far as the GB DS3 is concerned, I've read of people having troubles using the SATA and IDE. Also, that rev. 3.3 is best, is the newegg link at the bottom for the v3.3? It didn't specifiy in the link like for the 1.3. I plan on using an IDE dvd burner, as well as...

Suggest a solid quiet hard drive

I'm looking for around 300gb. Budget for the HD is less than $80, main concern is noise, followed by speed. I was looking at this, but it was just based on price. Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS (Perpendicular Recording Technology) 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM...

System build - good cpu/mobo choice for overclock?

Ok, I re-read through some OC'ing reviews on this site and am thinking of slightly changing my plan of attack; let me know if you think this is worthwhile. Would starting with the E4400 (or 4300) and leaving an upgrade path to an E6320 (or higher someday) be advisible? I'd be buying...

System build - good cpu/mobo choice for overclock?

SLI doesn't seem important to me, I doubt I'll be buying 2 video cards ever. After looking over some more of the reviews for that mobo I'd have to agree, I should find a different one. There were some others I was looking at. That Gigabyte seems fine except that there's no firewire and it...

System build - good cpu/mobo choice for overclock?

the budget isn't too flexiable. I'm looking at about $650 max w/o a video card. I'm open to leaving an upgrade path at the moment too. Which ram would you suggest? Actually, is there a good guide that goes over some RAM basics? I was going to use the antec because of noise concerns...

System build - good cpu/mobo choice for overclock?

EDIT: Check out my post a way further down; I've changed the system quite a bit after some feedback. I've spent a while doing some research, and am hoping for some feedback from those in the know... Is this going to be a decent setup? I'd like to overclock at some point (probably after...

    ASUS P5L-VM vs ASUS P5B-VM vs MSI P6N SLI-FI

I'm trying to decide between 2 motherboards. The main difference I see is the RAM type. Will 667 vs 800 really be that important? Edit: Looking through the boards I found this mobo. Sounds like it could be a winner. MSI P6N SLI-FI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard -...

    External antenna mod

Thanks for the helpful responses! I don't have control over the source, I use my laptop at school, library etc. I didn't know that about broadcoms, but I decided to crack my netgear card open in any case. I read some more on google about it and ordered a U.Fl connector (slightly different...

    External antenna mod

Hi all. I get really poor reception of wifi on my laptop, so I need to boost the reception. I opened up the laptop to take a look at the wifi card inside. It's a broadcom, and uses MMCX connections for the installed antenna. There seems to be two, one listed as 'main' and the other as 'aux'...

    Realtek audio ac'97 issues, ack!

    Realtek audio ac'97 issues, ack!

I just got an acer aspire 3003, and the left speaker emits a random popping noise. Today its been constant. I've tried updating the drivers, and reverting the drivers back to a version which seemed to fix similar problems for other aspire owners. I've tried using the k-lite coded pack. The...

    Will this video adapter work?
