You are right about the case getting cluttered .... quickly =)
I was thinking about going totally passive, but the case does have ventilation on the side for video cards. So I ended up getting the 7750 Sapphire with a small and quiet fan.
Thanks for your input =)
Thanks for the write up, lots of good info.
I'm hoping that the HTPC with Windows 8 will be able to play the role of a server with Storage Spaces and such.
Do you know if File History is avaliable for Storage Spaces created on a Windows 8 machine?
The build was waiting on the case. Fractal released it a couple of months ago and it pretty much sold out right away.
As soon as I get the parts, I'll post an update.
The M4 that you suggested is Out of Stock, but I did find this one Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2. Looks like its the same thing except the model number being SSD2 at the end. Would it be ok?
That looks like it would actually fit in the case.
As far as a hard drive I think im going to go with a 2TB...
Thanks, I'll take a look at the ASUS board. More SATA is a nice addition.
I'm thinking $500-600 to spend on whats left to purchase. Willing to spend more if it makes sense.
I think I posted a similar thread a while ago, but now I’m finally getting a chance to build an HTPC box.
HTPC will be used to watch movies (up to 1080p), YouTube/Twitch and light gaming (WoW, etc). Its not a deal breaker if I am not able to game. Audio wise I would like to run the HDMI...
I can vouch for the Antec ISK300. Its a great case, if you can put up with a cramped interior during the build. The stock CPU coolers fit as well.
The PSU is an SFF PSU, Im sure there are replacements for it. Though it depends on what CPU you go with, some should be ok with 150W.
I agree, thats the case I'm going to be using for my HTPC build.
Good luck getting one right now. Node 304 sold like hot cakes. Fractal says that they should be in stock beginning of December.
They used a longer power supply.
The X560 is only 160mm long.
Powercolor 7950 is 275mm long
Per Fractal's guidelines:
You should be fine, but it will be tight fit.
As far as the cooler, I know that an H60 will fit. I email Fractal about it, they said it would be fine.
Thanks for all your input.
I'll take a look at the Lian Li Q series cases.
And like many of you suggested, I'll stick with an i3 and built in video for the time being.
edit:
Might even order it today ... newegg is giving up to $100 for orders today.
Thanks for the quick reply blackmage.
I look at the "naked" RAM, thanks.
How does the build look over all?
Will the i3 have issues decoding HD (MKVs, H.264, wtc) material at all?
edit:
Has anyone used the Rosewill IR receiver with a Harmony One? Do they play nicely together?
So I'm looking to build an HTPC. Something with a small footprint and thats going to be able to steam movies at 1080i/p from my WHS box. I don't need an optical drive and I have a TechNet Sub so I don't need an operating system.
My budget is about $500.
Here is what I had in mind...
