Can I share a folder from windows server 2008 to XP clients without using active directory?
After doing some more research, it seems like a bit overkill for this small office.
We are currently using a workgroup, but have hit it's limit of 10 or so connections.
Is there something in the middle...
oops, misunderstood. I thought you meant the lightweight AD, not small business OS.
I will backup the local accounts and make domain accounts, and stick with standard server 2008 r2 and AD DS
I am trying to share a folder on a windows server 2008 r2 box on a local network with windows xp clients.
I have installed the active directory role and understand how to make users and groups, but I was wondering how to manage the users.
If an xp client logs in as "x" on their local...
At our busiest, we could have 15 or so simultaneous calls going on at a time. We have business class DSL, i believe it is around 10mb/sec down and 1 or 2 up.
I think you are right about looking into QOS rather than port forwarding.
I think this means that I will have to go with a different...
Hey Everyone,
We have around 20 VOIP phones in our office, and sometimes when everyone is busy, calls seem to get a metallic noise to them.
I contacted the phone company (8x8) and they said that some ports should be opened in the router to help with this problem.
The router is an Apple...
Hey Fayd,
thanks for the reply.
I think there seems to be some confusion.
I don't want to install windows on the drive, I want to use the HD to install windows and other things on other machines.
I have an external HD that I would like to partition into several volumes, each of which acts as a boot CD for several operating systems and live CDs.
I have tried making 5GB partitions and copying the data from my ISOs onto them, but I get BOOTMGR issues.
Ideally, the HD would house XP, 7...
I would like to add a NAS to an office I work for that has ~25 workstations.
It would have a large 'shared folder' that would be occasionally used by all employees.
I would also like to use Syncback to backup each workstation to it.
Could a sub-$1000 Netgear ReadyNas handle this sort of...
Just found out that the following exists...
Vista Sync Center
http://www.microsoft.com/windo...tures/sync-center.aspx
I will try to see if I can make this do what I need.
Is anyone familiar with the synchronization utility in xp? I'm told that it can sync over a network when booting or shutting down.
Has anyone played with this before and is it in vista?
The employees have files all over the place. On the desktop, documents folder, downloads, etc... and I don't think that
changing this behavior is in the cards : (
The document folder redirect sounds ideal, but is there another solution that will snag all things and chuck it on the server...
Thanks for the reply Chiefcrowe.
I would love to use home server, or just a nas with decent built-in software, but I have to use their 2003 box.
They paid a lot of money for it and need to use it in their minds, so I gotta go with it.
I use Dropbox and mozy.
Both are really good imo, but I like the extra features found in Dropbox. It lets me sync all my important stuff with all my computers, which is amazing!
Hey guys and gals, long time no see!
I am currently helping out at an office that has a server 2003 box in the closet that's not doing anything. They also have 15+ vista laptops deployed that, like most offices, HAVE NO BACKUP SOLUTION AT ALL!!!
What I would like to do is to have all of...
Just got the latest Maximum PC in the mail.
They do a round up of netbooks, but do not include the dell...
Eee PC 901 = 6/10
MSI Wind U100 = 7/10
Acer Aspire One = 8/10
They have not responded to me regarding the broken unit, but now I am thinking
that it was my fault anyway.
I was not using the black plug that YOyoYOhowsDAjello recommended using, so I probably
blew it out myself.
I'll just re-order the PSU.
Thanks everyone, I had no idea that the...
I woke up this morning and had to restart. Then I HAD NO INTERNET!
I felt like Stan's Dad in that South Park episode until I read this thread
on another computer, uninstalled Zone Alarm, and got back online
in no time.
Thanks for saving my butt yet again guys!
--EDIT-- (Clearer question)
I used THIS article to set up a SSH server with cygwin on an XP Pro machine.
How do you set the home directory that the user goes to once they SSH into the XP box?
--Thank You Guys
Man, that Canadian one in the Kitchen makes me cringe every time.
There was five or so Canadian ones that never aired on TV. The domestic
violence one with the waitress is brutal.
But alas, none of these are that one. I think I saw it on Digg, and it may have been
featured on an old...
I'm trying to hunt down this video I saw online a while back that was a compilation of 5 or so work accidents. It was a public service video from the 80's I think on how to avoid falling
off of ladders, slicing your hand in a saw, etc...
It was pretty freaking hilarious, but I cant find it...
Thank to everyone for all of the great help.
I ended up running all of the cable, and then hiring a professional to do all of the
connectors and patch panels, which saved a lot of time.
I got home the other day and turned everything on. The speakers were humming and the light on the T Amp was very dim.
After trying all the usual plugging an unplugging, I discovered that the power adapter was probably broken. This is because when
I touched the back of it, it burned my finger...
I just installed a Linksys WRT600N and it works really well.
Its being used in an Office with a mix of wired and wireless connections.
Laptops two rooms way from the Router have full bars.
I would definitely recommend it!
I am going to be running some Cat 6 cable and will be required to
put jacks on one end, and plugs on the other.
Can I follow a guide for RJ-45 cabling?
Can I use RJ-45 jacks and plugs? Because on I believe that Cat 6 uses 8P8C
plugs and jacks.
They have jacks on monoprice that say...
Yeah. Ive been looking for ways to fiddle with Linux on certain projects for years, but this may not be the right one.
I will probably go with a Windows Server OS and buy a rack mountable server from HP or Dell.
Removable drives may be a factor in picking a unit because someone in that other...
I will not have to use LDAP. They all use gmail and have their own sets of contacts.
A rack and two mounted switches were left behind from the previous company in the office, so rack mounted will work.
I thought Linux was free, but the Red Hat from dell ain't even close(also not sure what...
That is true and I am OK with that, but I want to try to limit that as much as possible.
If she has some tech support besides me, If I'm not around, then she isn't totally screwed.
It does look like there are some issues with Samba and Quickbooks 2006. There are workarounds, but I don't want to
turn into Tech Support just like SoundTheSurrender said.
Should I just buy a server with a warranty from Dell or HP and have them put Windows on it?
If I do that, which...
If I buy one from Dell or HP etc... Should I put Xubuntu on it or another OS?
I heard that the Microsoft Home Server is corrupting files, so I don't think that OS is for me.
I'm still going to have to set up the raid, daily back up, AV, etc...
Hey All,
In THIS thread, I stated that my Mother is a bookkeeper moving business out of the
house and into an office. She uses around 10 workstations that are mixed between
Windows and Mac Operating Systems.
I asked if she would need a NAS or a Server to house the quickbooks and document...
Well, I think that this thread has served its purpose. I asked which one would be right for me, and now know
that a server is the right choice.
Thanks everyone for all of the help, and it is good to know that I can make a thread about Servers if I need to.
THANKS!
OK. Assume that I go with a Dell server for the moment and put XP on it...
1. What specs on the server make the most sense? I assume that XP wont take advantage of dual quadcores or
a super amount of RAM etc..., am I right?
2. Are there servers filled with proprietary sized parts that will...
OK. I think I understand the difference between backing up and mirroring drives.
My goal for this week is to pick an OS, plus parts for the rack mountable server that I will build for this office.
OS - Is there a standard one that most people use? Is it Windows 2003 Server? What about...
